New Mexico High School Football Preseason Team Rankings for 2022
NMPreps will take a look at each team in New Mexico high school football leading up to the 2022 season. #nmpreps
(21) WEST MESA MUSTANGS
Town: Albuquerque, NM
2021 Record: 3-6 overall, 1-3 district
2021 Playoffs: missed
Head Coach: N/A
Scoop: The West Mesa Mustangs could be a team fighting their way out of the cellar in 2021. They graduate a quarterback that earned a spot in the 2021 NMHSCA Red vs Green Chile Senior All-Star Game. Next, the announcement that head coach Anthony Ansotigue has stepped down will set them back in any building process. The Mustangs program is a difficult job as is but over the last two seasons they have graduated some of their better talent and it could send them fighting to get out of the bottom of the classification. Good news? Well, they are no longer with the Rio Rancho powers in district. The bad news? They will still have to battle with La Cueva, Eldorado and a Farmington program that moves UP to 6A after being the 1-seed in 5A football in 2021.
Players: Plenty has graduated from the Mustangs roster and they'll have plenty of holes to fill. Some returners include Elijah Espinoza (2023/RB-LB), Isaiah Ontiveros (2023/RB-DB), and Darian Lucero (2023/DB). Vences Caraveo (2024/LB), and Zedekiah Thompson (2023/DB) also return on defense after gaining some experience last season.
Early Prediction: 1-9 overall, 0-4 district
