WEEK 13 - Saturday Swish

Notable Friday Results

Rio Rancho defeated Cleveland, 44-41 and held on to a share of first place in district. They'll play in a playoff game for the 1-seed in the district tournament on Tuesday at Atrisco Heritage against Volcano Vista.

West Mesa defeated La Cueva, 43-36 and hold on to second place outright. A Farmington win over PV would allow West Mesa to claim a share of first place and force a playoff for first place in Gallup on Monday (per Albuquerque Journal).

Alamogordo defeated Deming, 63-33 to secure second place in district ahead of Centennial and Onate.

Carlsbad got the stunning dominant win on the road in Hobbs, 56-48. The win gives Carlsbad a share of first and forces a playoff game to be played Monday at Roswell.

Pojoaque Valley got the road win at Los Alamos, 49-35 to claim the regular season district title.

Portales held off Lovington with a 45-40 win at the RAC to clinch the regular season district title.

Eunice defeated Loving, 54-52 to force a three-way tie atop the district 4-2A standings.

Texico was dominant in their road win at Pecos with a 58-32 win to claim the regular season district title outright.

Friday's Top Players

Carlsbad's Carsyn Boswell dropped 27 points in Tasker Arena for the win over Hobbs.

Hobbs' 8th grade talent, Wisdom Anthony led the Lady Eagles with 19 points in the loss.

Calysta Jacob of Alamogordo had 19 points on Senior Night in a win against Deming. Faith Silva added 17 points of her own for Alamogordo.

Goddard's Bailey Beene stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 blocks, and 2 steals in a loss to Artesia. Goddard's freshman standout, Alexis Sandoval added 18 points of her own as well.

Laura Gutierrez once again led Rio Rancho with 16 points in a win over rival Cleveland.

Alize Ruiz put up 20 points in the final regular season district win over Las Cruces.

What To Watch Tonight

Piedra Vista at Farmington
Let's keep this simple. PV wins, they win district outright. Farmington wins, the Lady Scorps don't benefit nearly as much as they're locked in third place no matter the result. PV losing would allow West Mesa to claim a share of first place and force a playoff game at a neutral location. Gallup on Monday is what I read.

Shiprock at Miyamura
Winner claims third place outright, barring an Aztec upset of Gallup in Gallup. Miyamura has decent position in the state tournament, but a loss to Miyamura would be borderline catastrophic to their chances of even MAKING the state tournament given Shiprock's resume against the projected last four teams. I hate the cliche, but it's must-win for Miyamura.

Grants at Belen
This is a big game for a Grants team that I had outside of the tournament field in early January. A Pirates win and they'll share second place with St. Pius X. A loss, and they're stuck in third place. Their final district position would be critical to their seeding. Belen on the other had is fairly tired of losing and this last game at home might be just enough to spur the Lady Eagles to spoil their district foe's aspirations.

Cuba at East Mountain
Okay, so East Mountain's social media account is stating that they won't play this game. That it is cancelled and won't be made up and immediately moved on to when they'll play in the district tournament. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you don't play a full district schedule aren't you unable to make the postseason? It's a new rule they placed forcing teams to play their full district schedule if they want to be postseason eligible. Maybe I'm making something outta nothing, but if Cuba agreed wouldn't they risk their eligibility? Or is there some kind of inclement weather clause that provides an out? Just curious for those who may know the fines lines in the bylaws. I know Santa Fe Prep didn't finish their season either in District 2-3A.

The "And Don't Forget" Quick Picks...

Manzano at Albuquerque - A Manzano win would force a tie with Albuquerque for second place in the standings, but Manzano would get the 2-seed in the district tournament due to head-to-head record with Albuquerque. Albuquerque secures district runner-up as well as the 2-seed in the district tournament with a win.

Rehoboth Christian at Dulce - Dulce already has district locked up no matter the result. Rehoboth Christian needs a win to avoid sharing second place with Newcomb and Tse' Yi' Gai.

Mora at Mesa Vista - In a stunning turn, Mora can move up to third place with a win against Mesa Vista. They could even claim it outright if Coronado were to upset Escalante.

Des Moines at Roy/Mosquero - It was a close one point loss in overtime the last time Roy/Mosquero met up with Des Moines. Now back home to close out district and their series, Roy/Mosquero can force a tie for second place and secure the 2-seed in the district tournament if they win by more than 1 point.

There's good possibility with this second storm this week we could see some regular season district games postponed to tomorrow or into early next week. Remember to share any news of postponements in this thread or in the Cancellations/Postponements thread.

Notable Thursday Results

Sandia clinched the regular season district title with a dominant home win over Albuquerque, 76-49.

Manzano claims at least a share of 3rd Place in district with a 47-40 win over Capital.

Highland dashed Bernalillo's third place bid by handing the Lady Spartans a 52-46 loss.

West Las Vegas evened the district series against St. Michael's on the road with a 53-50 win.

Sandia Prep clinched their regular season district title with a 54-32 win over Bosque.

Mora got the win this time around against Escalante, 32-29 and knocked Escalante out of the race for second place.

Animas got a solid win over regular season district champion Cliff, 45-37

Cimarron clinched their regular season district title with a win over Roy/Mosquero, 53-46.

Melrose defeated Fort Sumner, 55-25, and Logan defeated the Tri-Op, 67-26 to both finish the regular district season at 7-1 each. Both are considered co-champions and will play in a playoff game for the #1 seed for the district tournament. Date, time, and location TBD.

Thursday's Top Player Performances

Sandia Prep's Samantha Jeffries finished with a double-double (19pts and 13reb) in a regular season district title clinching win against Bosque.

NMSD's Mya Malone earned a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds in a close loss to Jemez Springs' Walatowa Charter School.

Key Games Tonight

Rio Rancho at Cleveland
Rio Rancho wins, they are co-champions with Volcano Vista (assuming VV wins their game against Atrisco). Even with a win, Cleveland can't move up the district standings as they're stuck in third place.

Piedra Vista at Farmington
Piedra Vista wins, they claim the district title outright. A PV loss and West Mesa loss, PV still claims the district title. A Piedra Vista loss combined with a West Mesa win leaves the two as co-champions and a playoff for the #1 seed in the district tournament to be decided. For Farmington a win and a West Mesa loss gives them a share of second place with West Mesa. A Farmington win and West Mesa win leaves Farmington solely in third place. A Farmington loss and a La Cueva win, leaves a tie for third place between the two teams.

West Mesa at La Cueva
West Mesa needs help from Farmington to claim a share of the district title. West Mesa must win and PV has to lose to claim a share and force a playoff for the district tournament #1 seed. A West Mesa loss leaves open the possibility of a tie for second place. A La Cueva win and Farmington loss creates a tie for third place.

Deming at Alamogordo
A Deming win puts them in a tie for fourth place with Onate. A Deming loss doesn't hurt them with their floor being no worse than a tie for 5th place if Las Cruces upsets Mayfield. An Alamogordo win, and they would secure the district runner-up spot. An Alamo' loss though combined with a Centennial win against Gadsden, would create a tie for second place and likely swapping places with Centennial in state tournament seeds.

Carlsbad at Hobbs
A Hobbs' win makes them district champions. A Carlsbad win and we have co-champions PLUS a one game playoff for the #1 seed in the district tournament at a neutral location. And, get this, a win for Cbad could give them a case for the 2-seed (depending on the outcome in District 2).

Pojoaque Valley at Los Alamos
Espanola did Pojoaque a favor in providing that one-loss to keep Pojoaque's district title hopes alive. Both teams enter 6-1 and the winner will be the outright regular season district champion. Not to mention it makes the bracketology projections much easier if Pojoaque wins (I'm thinking 4-seed?)

Goddard at Artesia
If Goddard wins, both Goddard and Artesia are tied at 3-3 for second place in district. If Artesia wins, then the Portales-Lovington result matters. An Artesia win+Portales win = Artesia claims second place outright. An Artesia win+Portales loss = Artesia and Portales co-champions.

Lovington at Portales
If Portales wins, regardless of the Artesia-Goddard game, they win the district title outright. If Lovington wins, then the door is open for Artesia to claim a share of first and be co-champions with Portales.

St. Michael's at Santa Fe Indian
A winnable game in comparison to West Las Vegas' three games in three days stand concluding with Robertson. St. Michael's is tied for the time being but can claim third place outright with a win and a West Las Vegas loss. SFIS has the second spot locked up so St. Michael's can't do better than sole possession of third or a share of third place.

Loving at Eunice
Loving can claim the district title outright with a win. A Eunice win combined with the likely Jal over Hagerman result creates a three-way tie for first place. Not sure what the NMAA seeding and selection would do if three teams are at the back-end of the tournament field tie as district champions who receive auto-bids?

Texico at Pecos
Pecos can become a district co-champion and force a playoff for the #1 seed in the district tournament with a win at home against Texico. A loss and Pecos still claims the second place spot. Possible seeding implications here regardless of result for Pecos.

Replay

Basketball Coaches,

On February 20th, the Board of Directors approved instant replay for the 2019 State Basketball Tournament as written in the NFHS rule book. Per NFHS Rule 2, Section 2 Article 1 Note, “A state association may permit game or replay officials to use a replay monitor during state championship series contests to determine if a scored goal at the expiration time in the fourth quarter or any overtime period (0:00 on the game clock) should be counted, and if so, determine if it is a two-point of a three-point goal.

More specific information will be forthcoming.

Miyamura (13-11, 6-2) can lock up the DRUP in 1-5A with a win over Bloomfield (9-15, 5-3) tonight.

Piedra Vista survived the La Cueva 4th Quarter comeback and won 49-48 with one more game left to win district outright.

West Mesa defeated Eldorado, 75-46, and during the game senior Army-commit Esperanza Varoz hit the milestone of scoring over 1000 points in her varsity career.

Bloomfield got the win at home against Miyamura, 58-52. The three-way tie for third place remains between Shiprock, Miyamura, and Aztec.

Both Los Alamos and Pojoaque Valley got wins which sets up the winner-take-all meeting between the two for the regular season district title.

Santa Fe Indian held off a stubborn West Las Vegas, 53-51.

Newcomb ties with Tse' Yi' Gai for third place after defeating them, 58-47.

Wednesday's Top Players

Esperanza Varoz of West Mesa scored 14 points and 4 assists in a win over Eldorado and surpassed the 1,000 career points milestone to join Maiah Rivas as the only two in West Mesa's 53-year school history.

Rio Rancho's Laura Gutierrez scored 16 points and the go-ahead 3-point basket from 5-feet off the arc in a win over Volcano Vista.

Ashley Antone helped lead the Gallup Lady Bengals in a dominant win over Shiprock on the road and finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals.

Halle Payne of Bloomfield scored 27 points in their win over Miyamura.

Key Games Tonight

#18 Albuquerque at #8 Sandia - Albuquerque really didn't do itself any favors when they lost to Manzano a few weeks back. Still, they can secure the runner-up spot with a win.

Capital at Manzano - Manzano can still get a share for second place with Albuquerque but need the win.

#15 Bernalillo at #4 Highland - Bernalillo can maintain their half game lead on Hope Christian for second place with a win. Highland has already clinched first place overall.

#12 Crownpoint at #11 Tohatchi - Both come in tied and the winner gets second place and preferred selection for seeding in the state tournament.

#9 West Las Vegas at #10 St. Michael's - West is coming off their close loss to Santa Fe Indian. Will they have anything left in the tank to make a move back to third place

#3 Estancia at #10 Magdalena - Estancia clinched the regular season district title with their win over NACA last night. Magdalena can only hope to win to secure their runner-up position in district over Alamo Navajo.

#11 Roy/Mosquero at #6 Cimarron - Cimarron can clinch district with a win. Roy/Mosquero can unbreak their tie for second place with Des Moines with a win.

#12 Fort Sumner at #1 Melrose - Melrose is already tied with Logan for first place and will likely play a playoff game. But Melrose can't overlook a deceptive Fort Sumner who would like to break the tie atop the standings.
