WEEK 13 - Wednesday Timeout

So about 50% of my Tuesday key games to see where either rescheduled or cancelled later this week. All I ask is that you forgive me for hitting that CTRL+C and CTRL+V combo this morning.

Notable Tuesday Results

Mayfield trailed at half but rallied in the third quarter and held off Deming for a 45-41 win.

Santa Fe gets the district sweep against Capital with a win, 44-36

Portales and Artesia battled in the RAC with the Lady Rams taking the win, 58-55.

Lovington survives a late Goddard game-winning attempt to win 31-30.

Loving hits the go-ahead basket and free-throw with 6 seconds left against Jal to hang on to first place with a win, 64-61.

Mescalero Apache survives a Cloudcroft upset bid for the 58-56 win.

Magdalena avenges their early district loss to Alamo Navajo with a 61-37 win.

Tuesday's Top Players

Mayfield's Alize Ruiz and Alyssa Madrid each finished with game high 16 points in a road win against Deming.

Mescalero Apache's Fallon Velasquez led all scorers with 27 points in a win against Cloudcroft. Cloudcroft's Laci Toddy and Kaylee Hickman both led the Lady Bears with 18 points each in the loss.

Lordsburg's Madison Miller led the Lady Mavericks with 21 points and 22 rebounds in a win against Mesilla Valley Christian.

Faith Silva of Alamogordo finished with 17 points in their win over Las Cruces.

Loving's Anyssa Rodriguez led the Lady Falcons with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in a win over Jal. Jayden Ottman posted a double-double for Loving as well with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Key Games Tonight

#4 Volcano Vista at #10 Rio Rancho
Volcano Vista (6-0) has the opportunity to clinch the regular season district title tonight with a win against second place Rio Rancho (5-1). Rio Rancho has shown signs of being above their average level of play with their win over Cleveland, but then let a struggling Cibola team make it a little close for comfort in their last game. But it's a mid-week game with district standing implications for first place on the line. These type of games usually bring out the best in most teams. Look for Rio Rancho to elevate their game against the explosive, young Volcano Vista squad.

#6 La Cueva at #2 Piedra Vista
West Mesa (4-2) are La Cueva's (3-3) biggest supporters tonight. Piedra Vista (5-1) has the toughest back-end of their district schedule and thanks to their previous district loss to Farmington (4-3) will now need to win out or have West Mesa drop a game to secure first place overall. West Mesa of course isn't completely out of the picture for first in district, but they'll need they help from La Cueva or Farmington.

Moriarty at #6 Pojoaque Valley - Moriarty looked great against Espanola Valley and now get the chance to be yet another team to have a thriller at Ben Lujan. Pojoaque, I'm sure is tired of any more upset bids from their district opponents. Hopefully the Elkettes aren't overlooking Moriarty and towards their meeting this week with Los Alamos.

Belen at #13 St. Pius X - Belen has a shot at making it interesting for Grants and St. Pius with a win on the road. St. Pius X can maintain their share of second place with a win but could see their second place spot loss if they lose their last district game.

#9 West Las Vegas at #3 Santa Fe Indian
This is a game that had to be rescheduled due to transportation issues for West. With the St. Michael's game that was supposed to happen rescheduled for tomorrow, West can hopefulyl refocus and set their sights on upsetting the second place team of SFIS. Santa Fe Indian has had a relatively quiet season with their only huge win over nearby Pojoaque Valley. Although this won't be a statement win, SFIS does need to find and use that dominant aspect of their game to close out teams especially with March just around the corner. This might be interesting for a quarter but I'm looking at SFIS to come out with a big win.

Also Don't Miss...

#3 West Mesa at #17 Eldorado - Eldorado's last regular season game and they don't have any wins. Expect a do-or-fly Lady Eagles to try head into next week's district tournament with an upset. If West Mesa were any other top team, they might overlook Eldorado for their meeting with La Cueva this weekend. I don't think West Mesa is that team. Look for another big game from the contributors outside of Maiah Rivas and Esperanza Varoz.

#16 Miyamura at Bloomfield - Miyamura is in a three-way tie but with a win here and the other two facing the top two district teams, they can get separation. Bloomfield has been trouble though for Miyamura in their shaky district run.

#2 Los Lunas at #14 Grants - The Port has been magic for Grants, but that might not be enough tonight against a tough Los Lunas team. Los Lunas can mathematically clinch the regular season district title tonight with a win. Grants can secure at least a share of second place with a win tonight and maybe the most stunning regular season upset in recent memory.

#15 Newcomb at #12 Tse' Yi' Gai - Newcomb can dash Tse' Yi' Gai's second place race with Rehoboth Christian with a win. TYG can put the pressure back on Rehoboth to win their district finale at Dulce on Friday with a win against Newcomb tonight.

Team Removed from Arizona's HS State Tournament

3A's No. 1 seeded Tucson Sabino High School girls basketball team has been removed from the Arizona 3A state basketball tournament after they advanced to the semifnals.

I know we cover the New Mexico scene here at NMPreps.com, but I think this is something interesting given the prior knowledge by the governing body that oversees high school sports in Arizona and the seemingly delayed action of removing them from the state tournament AFTER they've knocked two teams out who probably have a right to feel irate about playing a team that shouldn't have been there (Surprise's #16 Paradise Honors and #8 Chinle).

WEEK 13 - Tuesday Night Lineup

The last regular season Tuesday Night Lineup. Only three games last night but one is important in the district standings. Plus, last week's top performances by class, and tonight's key games you should know about.

Also, if you know of any postponements for games tonight please post them here or at the Game Postponements/Cancellations Thread.

Notable Monday Results

Questa defeated Mesa Vista, 50-49, and now have a shot at claiming second place outright if they can win two straight (currently 5-3). Problem is they have district leader Penasco in that two game stretch while Escalante sits at 4-4 with Mora and Coronado left. Could see a tie for second place in district.

Top Players for Week 12

5A - Sandia sophomore Viane Cumber with 28 points and 12 rebounds versus Santa Fe and 13 against Capital.

4A - Aztec senior Reigan Weaver with 29 points, 16 rebounds, and 7 blocks versus Bloomfield.

3A - Cobre sophomore Skkyla Guck who finished with a triple-double on 23 points, 16 rebounds, 11 steals, and 5 assists versus Hot Springs

2A - Pecos' senior Brittney Martinez stepping up and getting 18 points in a win against Clayton.

1A - Pine Hill senior Joy Pino who finished with 16 points per game through last week's stretch against Walatowa Charter (19) and To'hajiilee (13).

Tonight's Key Games

#6 La Cueva at #2 Piedra Vista
West Mesa (4-2) are La Cueva's (3-3) biggest supporters tonight. Piedra Vista (5-1) has the toughest back-end of their district schedule and thanks to their previous district loss to Farmington (4-3) will now need to win out or have West Mesa drop a game to secure first place overall. West Mesa of course isn't completely out of the picture for first in district, but they'll need they help from La Cueva or Farmington.

#9 Artesia at #10 Portales
They last time these two met, Artesia (3-1) allowed Portales' Taylee Rippee to have a monster game while containing the other contributors on Portales (3-1). While it was only an eight point loss, the series now turns to the RAC where Portales will have their final two games. Artesia still has Goddard remaining on their schedule and definitely could use this win to help cushion their district standing.

#13 Cuba at #8 Sandia Prep
Sandia Prep (8-0) pretty much came from the depths of my preseason district predictions and Sharknado'd their way into their current undefeated district standing. With the likes of Destiny Archibald and Samantha Jeffries, Sandia Prep has been on a tear and has most impressed with their slew of road games in this district. Tonight, the Sundevils have a shot at clinching first place outright with a win against second place Cuba (6-2).

#2 Pecos at #4 Penasco
This non-district meeting between two top four teams in Class 2A will make for a GREAT rematch from the NRG Championship where Pecos (19-4) got the stunning win over Penasco (20-3). Pecos is presently stuck behind Penasco in the seeding criteria but that might swing if Pecos can earn another win against Penasco. They're relatively close in the Maxpreps Rankings, could see a swap in the Coaches' Poll, and the overall record is SLIM. If Pecos can force a tie in the criteria points, tiebreaker goes to head-to-head. Postpone if need be because of the weather but don't deny us a quality game by cancelling it.

#4 Pine Hill at #16 To'hajiilee
Pine Hill (9-0) clinched district outright their last game against To'hajiilee (4-3) and now have a road game where they can go a perfect 10-0. To'hajiilee's district standing is hanging ever so precariously with Jemez Valley now in second place and Walatowa Charter looking to take over the third place spot. To'hajiilee is likely out of the state tournament at-large race if they can't win all of their final three games.

Don't Forget About...

#7 Mayfield at #15 Deming - Mayfield has first place wrapped, but Deming can make their wildly unlikely move to second place with two straight wins starting with the Lady Trojans tonight.

Santa Fe at Capital - Simple, Santa Fe wins and they're in a potential run for third place in district with one more win AND a Manzano loss to Capital later this week. Capital, needs this win and the next to move back up to third place as well.

Belen at #13 St. Pius X - Belen has a shot at making it interesting for Grants and St. Pius with a win on the road. St. Pius X can maintain their share of second place with a win but could see their second place spot loss if they lose their last district game.

#9 West Las Vegas at #10 St. Michael's - West Las Vegas has three games scheduled this week. They'll need to win two to at least have a shot at third place in district. St Michael's wins and they claim third place. St. Michael's is a tough place to win.

#19 Jal at #16 Loving - This could be the end for Loving's bid at a district title if they can't get this win tonight. Jal has a fairly easier game with Hagerman later this week while Loving would still have to beat Eunice, a team they've split games with so far this season.

#9 Alamo Navajo at #10 Magdalena - The rivalry tips off in Magdalena where Alamo Navajo will look to secure their second place district position. A Magdalena win would provide them with AT MINIMUM a share of second place.

#5 Tatum at #17 Gateway Christian - Tatum can clinch their district title outright with a win.

Looking forward to the posts here on this topic:
1. UNM should recruit more local Fortnite players.
2. The private schools will dominate in Tiger Woods golf -- that's a country club e-sport.
3. No town loves and supports their e-sport athletes more than Artesia.
4. Mayfield just hasn't been able to compete in Madden since they opened that 4th high school.

I have an interesting prospective as a former Lobo and a father. I was a local Abq scholarship football player at UNM started every game I was healthy, 3 year Lettermen, and was pre-season all conference my senior year. I was under sized and too slow but I played with a New Mexico chip on my shoulder as has many local players that played at UNM before and after me.
My son just finished his senior football season and was rewarded for his hard work with many post season accolades. 4 year lettermen, 3x All District, 2x All Metro, 2x All State, District def player of the year, Metro Def player of the year, All USA Today team. 2x All academic. 3.75 GPA and 25 ACT. And topped it all off with a State Championship. I am not going to say he was D1 material because he had no D1 offers. He was on the recruiting boards of UTEP, N Texas, W KY, IOWA, and others. To a team everyone of them asked why hasn’t UNM offered him? One coach went as far as to say; as bad as they are they should be all over a local kid like you. So what did UNM and NMSU do. NMSU never talked to him. UNM after the NM Bowl game when a N Texas coach asked why are you not recruiting him did they come by the school and talked to my son. Then with a week to go before signing day they invited him to come down for an “unofficial official” visit. Now my son has been to over 75 Lobo Football games, was a junior Lobo and when he was 7 was an honorary youth captain. He has been to UNM camps since he started playing football. He’s wanted to be a Lobo. After his Junior year he sent his highlight film to 3 coaches as instructed by UNM’ recruiting information. He repeated the emails throughout his senior year and never once received acknowledgement from anyone at UNM.
So I have 2 perspectives and a third if you add the 1 Year I spent as a graduate assistant at NMSU.
UNM is failing to unite the community. Ask any local HS coach (might have to be off the record) what they think about UNM’s local recruiting effort and they will say it is weak. One coach at a different HS then my son played at said he told them to quit coming by. Another head coach called and asked if UNM was recruiting my son. When he heard they were not he lost it and said if they won’t look at him who will they look at. Notice I said recruited not offered. With a week to go before signing day they make their first contact. Lots of pressure from people around the community. My son didn’t take the “unofficial official visit” we asked coach are you going to offer a scholarship and they said no we don’t have any left, because we are signing 3 junior college players at your position. For those of you who know that is not how you build a program. The shelves will be bare when the new coach is hired after next season. They offered a preferred walk on vie text. My son never responded to the text. Now Bob Davie and his staff can rebuttal with stuff like there is not D1 talent in NM. “Name one player that was offered a D1 who we didn’t recruit”. What they are missing out on is the strategy to build a community of football support. Had they recruited my son (not necessary offered) he would have a completely different attitude. As he said, I wish they would have a least shown the love. As a local kid who stayed and played at UNM, built a successful business and donated over 100k to the program over the years and purchased up to 8 season tickets a year for the last 25 years I think it is important to the program to “invest” in our local talent. For those of you who will say I am a bitter father, your right. As a former local player I am disappointed, upset, and disgusted with the current program. I am not alone. My son is going to play at the next level, a D2 school that showed a ton of love. A great fit and a perfect place for him.

MAS - D6P

District 7-2A
Texico - District Champion
Pecos - DRUP
Clayton - D3P
Santa Rosa - D4P

STATE TOURNAMENT PREDICTIONS

HOST A FIRST ROUND GAME
1. Texico
2. Penasco
3. Pecos
4. Dulce
5. Estancia
6. Mescalero Apache
7. Lordsburg
8. Clayton

Regardless of a tie in district standings with Pecos, Texico should be the overall number one team in March for Class 2A. Pecos can't really move up to that 2-seed anyways with Penasco leading 2-4 in criteria points (the H2H game coming up doesn't hurt). Dulce has the rankings and wins versus district champions right now to stay ahead of Estancia.

The first mess is how the line up of Estancia-Mescalero-Lordsburg will fall. It's technically a three-way tie that now Estancia will likely win given the tougher teams in their district. Mescalero and Lordsburg split so really they couldn't do better than the 5-seed and will likely just swap places if one finishes ahead of the other. Not a lot of drop-off for them.

Clayton wraps up the top-8, although Magdalena could make the move and swap places with Clayton. That depends if Magdalena can even the series with Alamo Navajo this upcoming week.

NEXT FOUR
9. Alamo Navajo
10. Magdalena
11. Tse' Yi' Gai
12. Cloudcroft

Again, big district game for Alamo and Magdalena and if Magdalena can even the series, they have a shot at the 8-seed. If Alamo Navajo wins, they'll likely stay right where they are currently projected. Tse' yi' Gai and Cloudcroft wrap up the 11 and 12-seed.

BUBBLE
13. Rehoboth Christian
14. McCurdy
15. Loving
16. Jal

Rehoboth and McCurdy are relatively safe given their strong resumes. It's Loving and Jal right now that needs to be cleared up. Newcomb is actually the 16-seed but if there are co-champions in District 4 (which is a very likely scenario) then by rule both teams get the auto-bids in (to my understanding). It's not common that this results in a team being knocked out of the tournament given that most districts with co-champions already have strong enough resumes to get in. So in the coming weeks, Newcomb just has to hope this district doesn't end in a tie atop the standings. In fact, Newcomb is the new Jal fan because if they're the looking to move up to the 15-seed (they beat Jal in criteria points to move up).

FIRST FOUR OUT
17. Newcomb
18. Capitan
19. Santa Rosa
20. Questa

Individual statistical leaders

The Journal is no longer printing the individual statistical leaders in the various categories. I always enjoyed reading them, particularly towards the end of the year. There are a number of outstanding players this year and I think there are 3 or 4 players who may be in contention for the leading scorer and there are a couple players who may be leading in 2 or 3 different categories. Does anyone have this information or know how we could get it?
