Eastern NM ID Camp @ Santa Teresa HS

Hello, Hello, is there anybody out there.....just riffing Pink Floyd.

Anyways, We are happy to announce the Eastern NM will be holding a satellite ID camp down here at Santa Teresa HS on Feb 17th. Yes, a Sunday.

This will be the same format that they are going to run at their camp at the end of January.

Now with that said, your kids can either drive to Portales and pay the full $75 or or drive straight down I-25 to ST and only pay $40. I think I know what some parents would prefer.

Anyhow, please share this info with any soccer coaches you communicate with and if they have questions to contact us at lvillalobos@gisd.k12.nm.us.

Here is the online registration form for those who wish to use it. Please share this as well.

NM Players & MLS Draft

So what could be a pretty historic day for New Mexico soccer. Two NM products go in the first 28 picks of the 2019 MLS Superdraft.

Sunland Park native Luis Barraza went to NYCFC at #12, a huge jump from some of his projected spots.

Sergio Rivas of Cibola goes to San Jose at #26.

I cannot recall a text in the modern MLS Draft history where 2 NM kids went this high in the draft. Please inform me if I am overlooking something.

I know players like Edgar Castillo and Aaron Herrera went straight to pro after no college time (Castillo) and 2 college years (Herrera). Again, I might be missing people.

But a pretty good day for NM soccer. We aren't a talent factory like CA or FL, but quite a showing for those of us down in the trenches.

Grants boys coached fired?

Information is circulating that coach Gilbert was let go by Grants superintendent for an alleged relationship with a female student and is under police investigation.

There was a previous incedent before basketball season and coach Gilbert was placed on administrative leave which was covered up and was allowed to coach after a video was posted of him slamming a player to the ground and knocking him unconscious.

Week 11: Daily Dimes - Wednesday, February 6

Notable Games

5A:
Capital (14-5, 2-2) and Manzano (10-8, 2-2) will square off in Albuquerque on Wednesday night and will look to make some separation in a six team district with all identical district records at 2-2. Sandia (8-10, 2-2) and Albuquerque (5-13, 2-2); Santa Fe (15-5, 2-2) and Rio Grande (2-2) also in action as half the group goes to 3-2 and the other 2-3. If they want a couple bids to state (1 automatic) then the cream will have to rise. The Capital-Manzano brings the most intrigue on the night with Manzano coming off back-to-back wins over Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Capital rebounded with a win over Santa Fe to end last week and ended a two-game skid. District 5 owns the night for Wednesday. Also, in action is a slumping West Mesa team who has dropped 8 of the last 9 games; they did snap a 7-game losing streak last week. La Cueva is playing under the radar in some sense and have won 7 of their last 8 games and currently winners of the last two games.

5A Line-Up: TJ Sanchez (Capital) is putting in 18 points per game this season and 6 rebounds a game. Can he lead the Jags to an important win. Derek Aeilts (La Cueva) who is averaging 20 points per game this season has averaged 22 per game in the last three with a 27 and 25 point performance.

4A: The only game of the night happens in Valencia County - Los Lunas (17-3, 3-0) and Valencia (14-7, 3-0). The first round heads east of Tome' hill as Valencia looks to knock off the top-ranked Tigers at home. Valencia enters the game ranked 3rd (New Mexico High School Rankings) which is the highest ranking in NMPreps.com history.

4A Line-Up: Jake Mattox (Valencia) and Zanen Zeller (Los Lunas) are also favorites for DPOY and possible First Team All-New Mexico candidates this season. Mattox is putting in 20 points per game this season.

Small School Basketball

St. Michael's (13-7) looks to stay atop 3A basketball with a district game against West Las Vegas (9-10). A very under-the-radar 3A game is Wingate (13-7), ranked sixth this week, taking on a Zuni team on the silent rise after a win over Navajo Prep last week.

Melrose (15-5) and Logan (17-4) battle in 1A basketball for a top-4 hopeful game and maybe for fun sake Animas (13-7) travels to Quemado (20-1).

TONIGHT'S KEY GAMES

#8 Cleveland at #14 Rio Rancho
Cleveland (15-6; 2-1) will head into this rivalry game with all intents to make life miserable for Rio Rancho (12-9; 2-1). Both teams are tied at the moment for second, but the winner will take the lead along with second place in district heading into the second half of district play. Rio Rancho has lost 5 of their last 7 games, but found some relief with wins over Atrisco and Cibola. It'll take more than a big game from Laura Gutierrez given Cleveland's Caldwell and Harriott's harassing defense. It's a tough middle of the week game and this one could be out of hand by halftime.

Cibola at #15 Eldorado
Eldorado (8-11; 0-4) needs some relief after coming up winless so far in district. This game against Cibola is one the Lady Eagles need to maybe get back on track and regroup before diving back into their district on Saturday at PV. Cibola (4-15; 0-4), also need a win after losing nine straight. If it turns into a grind out game, I like Eldorado's odds given their size and grit, but if Cibola comes out throwing punches from beyond the perimeter and in transition, this could get interesting. Eldorado really can't afford the loss, because it can hurt their rankings for seeding purposes. Deming and Las Cruces will be Cibola fans for this one.

Tonight's Games

#7 La Cueva at #3 West Mesa
Both teams got help Monday night when Farmington handed PV their first district loss. Now the winner between West Mesa (18-1; 2-1) and La Cueva (16-3; 1-2) can get a share of that first place district position. The last time these two teams met in the Metro Tournament, it was West Mesa that jumped out to a double digit lead before La Cueva made a run to cut it back to single digits. West Mesa will definitely be ready after their win Saturday against Eldorado. The questions lie with La Cueva: How close is Ingram to 100% healthy? Can their freshmen continue to carry a larger part of the scoring load? Can their defense not only slow down and limit West Mesa, but also generate points off of it as well?
No jib-jab on a race to 50 or 60 in this one. It'll come down if La Cueva has the defensive scheme and who all will contribute offensively to take the scoring load off Kaya Ingram.

#13 Centennial at #12 Alamogordo - GAME OF THE NIGHT
Centennial (11-10; 4-3) is making a late run at their top spot after a dismal first half of district play. Three straight wins and they're looking to make it back-to-back revenge games against Alamogordo (15-6; 4-3), another team that upset them at home in the first few district games played. Centennial has been exceptional on the road with some hard-fought wins and have a 4-0 record to show for it. All district games are pivotal, but this one is Alamogordo's chance to stave off Centennial's run as they now share second place (at 4-3) with the Lady Hawks and Onate (Onate will be at Mayfield Tuesday as well). Jessica Rios has been a critical part of Centennial's success this season, but she'll need help from Dianne Hefner or the Laborin sisters. Alamogordo will need another big game from Faith Silva, who has been on an absolute tear this district season, and another one or two contributors defensively.

#17 Las Cruces at #16 Deming
Both teams are right at the cut-off point in the state tournament Class 5A projections and have been swapping back and forth through most of January. Las Cruces (9-12; 3-4) now has a big opportunity to potentially "knock out" Deming (13-7; 2-4) from the state tournament and secure their spot ahead of Deming. Deming on the other hand is just off their big win against Alamogordo and now will have to make the home stand to keep their chances at a tournament bid alive without relying on the district tournament. Last time these two met in Cruces, the Lady Bulldawgs got the jump in the first quarter and never looked back. Deming definitely plays better at home.

#10 Sandia at #19 Albuquerque
Sandia (12-6; 4-0) looms quietly in the back end of the top ten still figuring out what kind of team they are. With a roster still stacked with youth it shouldn't surprise they're middle of the pack in 5A. They're still district favorites, but Manzano and now Albuquerque (6-12; 3-1) do want to play spoilers and at least get a win against a district favorite to help their respective state tournament resume bids. Albuquerque is looking to bounce back as well from their disappointing loss to Manzano which ruined their initial chances at a first place position in district. Now with a loss to Sandia and a Manzano win, Albuquerque will drop back to third place. This game wraps up the first half of district for both teams.

#13 Los Alamos at #4 Pojoaque Valley
Los Alamos (9-12; 3-0) looks to wrap up a hard fought first half of district with a win over the favorites in Pojoaque Valley (18-3; 3-0). It'll be a tall order though as Pojoaque is a perfect 7-0 at home. That's not to say Los Alamos doesn't have a shot. The Lady Hilltoppers have done quite behind the efforts of 6-foot Natalie Gallegos, guard Savannah Lucero, and 5-11 forward Rebecca Green. It's a solid group of mostly juniors that head coach Lanse Carter should have ready to match up well against the likes of Pojoaque's Ashten Martinez and Toni Aquino. But Pojoaque also has Taylor Roybal and Michaela Martinez at the guard spot who have shown to help open the floor up with their ability to knock down shots from the perimeter. This will be an interesting game if Los Alamos keeps it game in the second half.

#8 Goddard at #14 Portales
District 4-4A is finally underway, and with that we'll get a clear idea now who the top teams are from this district. Preseason favorites had Portales, but with the youth they've fallen out of favor for now. Meanwhile, Goddard and Artesia have surged into the district talks and even have their shared time in the 4A top-ten rankings. Portales (9-10) will need to make the home stand count against Goddard (12-7). The match-up I'm looking forward to seeing is the one between Goddard's Bailey Beene and Portales' Taylee Rippee, two of the best players in the district, with Beene an early favorite for District MVP. First one to 40 in this potential slugfest.

#16 Belen at Grants
Belen (9-12; 1-2) nearly had the upset against St. Pius X but fell short. Grants (7-13; 1-2) is looking to bounce back from their Los Lunas game. This game is the last of the first half of district play and the winner will own third place outright for the time being. For Grants a win means better odds at a state tournament bid and for Belen a win means a better secured state tournament bid. Grants does have the offense that Belen sometimes struggles to kick start on their own. The Port is the place to be for this critical game between the two teams.

#12 Crownpoint at #7 Navajo Prep
Crownpoint (12-9; 4-1) really ruined their secured top district spot with the loss to Tohatchi but have another great chance here to get a big district win at the Eagles' Nest in Navajo Prep (12-9; 4-1). Navajo Prep has a great shot here to grab a hold of the district top spot and make a push at a better seed for the state tournament. This is one I wish I would be there to see, but with Navajo Prep rattling off four straight and now looking for their fifth Crownpoint has their work cut out for them.

Monday Night Games

#9 Farmington at #2 Piedra Vista
Early games in the week are often favorable conditions for an upset. Mondays are indeed the worst for favorites, but Piedra Vista is coming off a game where Farmington hasn't played since Tuesday. Still, everyone knows that rivalry games come with a degree of uncertainty. Farmington could use the big bounce back game from their loss to West Mesa. Piedra Vista can't afford to give any games away to anyone from the district if they want to secure that top spot. Fun one in a race to 50.
