Week Nine - Saturday Swish

NMPREPS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK: #1 West Mesa at #8 Piedra Vista
West Mesa (16-0) take their undefeated record northward to kickstart their district play at impressive Piedra Vista (17-2). Piedra Vista prides themselves in their ability to defend, while West Mesa has shown they can drop 50 on almost any team with relative ease. West Mesa proved no road test is too tough with their earlier season wins at Hobbs and Carlsbad. And we'll get an even better idea of what Piedra Vista is really made of. Race to 50 in this one.

#1 Robertson at #3 Tucumcari
This is one we've had circled all season. The 3A juggernaut Robertson Lady Cardinals (18-0) take their undefeated streak to Tucumcari (15-4) in what should be a better game than most have had against the Lady Cards'. Robertson is just tall and strong and bully opponents in the paint. Alianza Darley is one of the best defenders in generating points off turnovers with her height and length. It'll take a lot from the likes of Ashley Shipley, Aliyha Herrera, Jasmine Jones, and Kalani French to not only score against this Robertson team, but defend them as well. To keep 3A interesting and to make Robertson beatable, Tucumcari needs to win this game.

#16 Bloomfield at #5 Pojoaque Valley
It's been a rough stretch for Bloomfield (10-7) in the month of January with 13 games now in 26 days. They dropped two would-be wins against Shiprock and Aztec and now they have a tall order to get the win in Pojoaque (16-3). Pojoaque is coming off two solid wins against Espanola and Taos. Now they'll have to make sure they're ready for a Saturday slump that Bloomfield is capable of making interesting. But Pojoaque has played well all season at home, holding a 6-0 record. If Pojoaque can create turnovers off their defense again and get easy baskets, it'll be a long game for Bloomfield.

#2 Santa Fe Indian at #6 West Las Vegas
West Las Vegas (12-5) has had a surprising good season under first year head coach, Miranda Martinez. Right in the mix of 3A, they're looking to advance their position with a win against a fairly tough Santa Fe Indian (16-3) team. The Lady Braves are looking to bounce back from their loss to Robertson with a win on the road against a team they can't overlook.

#13 Tse' Yi' Gai at #15 Newcomb
Newcomb (8-10) is set to host Tse' Yi' Gai (9-4) Saturday afternoon in what looks like a battle for a top spot in district. Newcomb just off their win against Dulce gets a great chance at keeping their position atop district (along with Rehoboth).

Other Games To Note:

(3A) #4 Hatch Valley at (2A) #9 Estancia
Hatch continues their tough small school schedule by facing a rising Estancia team who might challenge Magdalena for district.

(2A) #2 Clayton at (1A) #2 Logan
A quality game up in the northeastern part of the state as Logan sets to bounce back from their loss to Melrose this week with a game against tough Clayton.

(1A) #5 Cliff at (2A) #7 Lordsburg
Cliff looks to bounce back from their loss to Hatch with a road trip to Lordsburg. Lordsburg again, just off a win against Cloudcroft.

Feel free to share any games of interest today that you'll be watching or that I missed!

Week Nine - Friday Fastbreak

A loaded Friday night for all of us as we're in a heated start to district play.

#16 Las Cruces at #12 Alamogordo
Las Cruces (8-10) hopes to shake off a two game slide dropping them to 2-2 in district play when they head to Alamogordo (14-4). The Lady Tigers' Faith Silva is on a hot streak, and if Las Cruces can't manage their turnovers and keep a defender on Silva, it could be a long night for the Lady Bulldawgs.

(5A) #18 Clovis at (4A) #11 Portales
Portales (7-10) got a much needed week long break since their last game. They'll play host to Clovis (7-12) who handed them their first loss of the season in the first game of the season in Clovis. It'll have a lite revenge theme to it, but more importantly, it's one of the last games before each team starts their district. Wins get harder as the season rolls on and both teams need them.

#4 Gallup at #8 Miyamura
Who doesn't love some cross-town rivalry games with a district twist? It's been a fairly one-sided affair between these two teams as Gallup (12-6) owns the rivalry, 20-2. Only in their last six meetings has Miyamura (12-5) been able to get those two wins. Now, more than ever the Lady Patriots will have to prove they're contenders and it starts with a critical home stand against a Gallup team looking to bounce back from their home loss to KC.

#17 Aztec at #16 Bloomfield
The old 550 rivalry comes back as both teams look to rebound from their opening district loss and get one in the win column. Aztec (7-10) comes in with the 4-2 record in January while Bloomfield (10-6) is 8-3 since the start of the new year. But with 11 games in 22 days packed in, I think that poses some problems as we saw when Bloomfield lost the lead at Shiprock and gave up 66 points.

#12 Espanola Valley at Moriarty
Espanola had a great offensive game at home against Pojoaque but they'll get a real road test here as they'll have another test in defending the paint against a team with a serious size advantage. If Espanola (or just Kaylinn Martinez) can find that shooting touch again, it may be a long night for Moriarty. But Moriarty was able to force OT in Los Alamos. Their hungry for a win.

#10 Cloudcroft at #7 Lordsburg
Cloudcroft (12-5) has kind of held their own in the mid-tiers of 2A. No big wins yet for the Lady Bears but no bad losses either. Led by a Laci Toddy, Mariah Barnett, and Kaylee and Britney Hickman, Cloudcroft has made a solid case for a tournament bid. Their toughest test against Lordsburg (10-6) should prove to be valuable if they want to move up their rankings and seeding. Lordsburg is looking to end a two-game drought against formidable opponents. This game plays right into a quality matchup for Anissa Plowman, Analisa Castaneda, and Maria Reyes.

#14 Jemez Valley at #17 Walatowa Charter
This game is not the most important or the brightest in the marquee. I just like that they're a small community with two schools who I think you can literally walk out the front door of each and wave to the other school. Still, Jemez Valley (11-4) has won 7 of their last 8 meetings and are 13-5 overall versus the Lady Cougars of Walatowa Charter (4-4). The little cross street rivalry should be a fun one this year.

#8 Tatum at #7 Elida
Tatum (13-4) is on a four game win streak and look to make it five when they head to Elida (7-3) who also have their own three game win streak at stake. The frenetic defense of Tatum will likely wear down the 7-player roster of Elida, but I don't think Elida will go away that easy. They're one of the more athletic teams in the class, and if they're able to get wins despite having 7 players I think this one could prove to be a lot closer than expected. Keep Tatum out of the paint and off the free throw line and I think Elida has a serious chance to hold off the Lady Coyotes.

Week Nine - Thursday Outlet Pass

Not a ton of huge marquee games with almost all districts (but the four team districts) underway. Here's five to watch tonight.

#10 Sandia at Santa Fe
Sandia (9-6) had a low scoring win to end a three game skid against Manzano on Tuesday night. They'll hit the road heading north where they hope to find some offense against a young, but promising Santa Fe (6-11) team.

Albuquerque at #19 Capital
Prior to the start of district, Sandia was the clear favorite. Capital (7-9) and Albuquerque (3-11) have a strong argument to at least be the most likely to challenge Sandia in district play. Albuquerque's Tiara Pendleton is off a huge double-double performance against Santa Fe. The matchup might be favorable again for the Lady Bulldogs but we'll have to see what Capital's senior Kyannah Cole and company will have to say about that.

#10 Navajo Prep at #9 Tohatchi
Navajo Prep (9-9) dropped a surprising game at Crownpoint (10-8). Now to avoid falling out of the district race, they'll need this win in Tohatchi where teams like Farmington have struggled to get a win. Tohatchi shares the first place spot for now with Crownpoint, but they'll need to keep pace to maintain their share of first.

#12 Mora at #4 Penasco
Mora (8-6) has lingered in the mid-tier area of 2A without making too much noise this season. Their best win might be against fellow 3A Bosque, but that's it. Penasco (12-3) on the other hand has only one loss against a fellow 2A opponent in Pecos. Other than that, they're a confident lock in the coming weeks through their district play.

#2 Logan at #3 Melrose
The game of the night is this district rivalry between these top three teams of Logan (15-2) and Melrose (11-5). Nearly an hour and half apart these two are clear district favorites to win and get a grip on a top 3 seed in state. We'll see if Jordan Hines and Karli Webb can get the road win against Nataley Mondragon and Shannon May. I'm sure Logan is still bitter about being knocked out in the EPAC semifinals in what was a 49-45 win for the Lady Buffs'.
