The RAKE Challenge

Pojoaque Valley High School Baseball has partnered with Coach Edmonson & Carlsbad High School Baseball to start a statewide RAKE (Random Acts of Kindness & Empowerment) Challenge. This past Friday Carlsbad handed out doughnuts & talked with students as they arrived on campus. Pojoaque had a pizza party & gave some fellow students free baseball gear. We posted our acts of kindness on social media & challenged Rio Rancho, Valencia, Manzano, & Atrisco Heritage baseball programs to RAKE at their school & then challenge new schools.

We want to challenge all baseball programs to participate in RAKE. Carlsbad & Pojoaque will post a new RAKE Challenge every month this school year & challenge new schools. My vision is to grow this beyond our state. If you’re interested in joining the challenge contact Coach Riggins or Coach Edmonson & Let’s RAKE!

Week Eight - Tuesday Night RECAP

Eldo' Stuns Storm
First and foremost, WOW! Eldorado, your dang playoff hopes are still alive! You needed that big resume win and you got it. We'll have to wait and see if Eldorado can ride this win with a two home game stretch starting with Rio Rancho on Thursday and a sneaky Albuquerque High on Friday. Cleveland will have recover before their Metro rematch with Highland on Thursday night.

Ten Straight and Counting
Santa Fe Indian got that big two-point win at home over Pojoaque Valley making it TEN straight wins for the Lady Braves. A bit of a stumble here for the Elkettes, losing three of their last four. Granted it's been on the road or neutral floor, but it's against the toughest competition each class has to offer and they need to show they can win them. Pojoaque gets a much needed week long break before they get Espanola Valley on the road. SFIS will likely make it 11-straight with their week close out game at 2A Escalante.

Centennial Lady Hawks aka Phoenixes
Centennial had the dominant bounce back game holding previously 2-0 Las Cruces to only 19 points for the game. Centennial get their first win of district play. The current district standings are still early, but the Lady Hawks are out of last place in district and jumped all the way to...fifth place! Still quite a ways to go for Centennial, but there's plenty of district games left.

La Cueva Unshaken, Unrattled, Rolled To A Win
La Cueva hosting Sandia was not as great as I thought it was going to be. Ingram got hurt with 3:33 left in the first (rolled her ankle; she'll be fine) and the prime opportunity for Sandia to kick it into another gear and steal this game never happened until it was too late. Broussard got into foul trouble (picked up a technical and fourth foul) and had to sit through most of the first half. Cumber was effective in the paint off the offensive boards but Sandia had a terrible shooting night and their roster's youth showed up at the wrong time. It wasn't a great night for Sandia at all. La Cueva got an opportunity to show one thing and that's even without Ingram on the floor, they're just as confident and dangerous. A big confidence boosting win for the Lady Bears.

Lady Skyhawks Send Statement
Newcomb almost got to the century mark on Northwest. Wow. I think maybe I just picked the wrong Shiprock school for them to beat?

Closer Game Than Expected (Ranked)
3. Belen defeated Atrisco Heritage, 35-32. - Belen letting these games get a little too close late.

2. Robertson defeated Tohatchi, 52-38 in Las Vegas - I thought this was going to be 20+ given Robertson's size and dominance in the paint.

1. Texico defeated Fort Sumner, 37-29 - Now maybe this is the "letdown"-ish game that Texico has after winning EPAC, but against 1A's #9 Fort Sumner? Hmm.

As Expected Result (Unranked)
-Tucumcari def. Raton, 74-24 - Salley O'Malley margin.
-Valencia def. Del Norte, 30-25 - Head Coach Micaela Medina gets the "W".
-Farmington def. Miyamura, 78-76 in OT - No idea who got to 50 points first but I'm still taking the win.

Gallup Guessing Game
You lose by twenty one night and you bounce back to win by twenty the next night. Gallup got the 69-49 home win over former district rival, Rio Rancho. The bigger question is which Gallup team shows up on Saturday against Espanola Valley?

District Preview - District 1-2A

With district action kicking off tonight for the big northwest-ish region, here's a preview of what to watch for.

PREDICTED FINISH
1st - Dulce
2nd - Newcomb
3rd - Rehoboth Christian
4th - Tse' Yi' Gai
T-5th - Navajo Pine
T-5th - Northwest
7th - Ramah

DULCE LADY HAWKS

Head Coach: Stanford Salazar (2nd Season)

Current Record: 8-5

Current Ranking: No. 7 in 2A (Week 8)

Notable Wins: Durango (CO), at Cuba, Thoreau, at McCurdy, Mora, at Navajo Prep

Tough Losses: Farmington, at Shiprock, at Pojoaque, Santa Fe Indian, Penasco

Key Players: Brooke Vigil (Senior), Lauryn Vigil (Senior), Jasmine Salazar (Sophomore), Caitlin Duncan (Junior)

Rundown: They rank in the top five in Maxpreps and that includes a top four strength of schedule for Class 2A. Currently ranked at #7 in the NMpreps.com Class 2A rankings this week and have an unblemished home record at 3-0 so far this season. They play tempo and average nearly 48 points per game through half of their season. They have one of the easier districts, but did right to schedule a tough front-end to try to pay dividends before heading into a long district season.

Ceiling/Floor: First place finish overall/Tie for first place

Predicted Finish: First Place overall

NEWCOMB LADY SKYHAWKS

Head Coach: Bill McLaughlin (1st Season)

Current Record: 5-9

Current Ranking: No. 18 in 2A (Week 8)

Notable Wins: Navajo Pine, Tularosa, Thoreau, Crownpoint

Tough Losses: Estancia, at Navajo Prep, St. Michael (AZ), at Shiprock

Key Players: Hanna Begay (Sophomore), Aaleigha Ashley (Junior), Shoshanna Begay (Junior) Zoey Natonabah (Sophomore)

Rundown: Don't overlook this team because of their record. Newcomb had the 5th strongest schedule in 2A right behind their new district rival, Dulce. Unfortunately, it didn't translate to as many wins as they would've liked, but it's a new season when district comes around. With a healthy mix of upper and lowerclassmen, Newcomb should be right in the mix and possibly contending for their district title this season.

Ceiling/Floor: Tie for first place / third place overall.

Predicted Finish: District Runnerup

REHOBOTH CHRISTIAN LYNX

Head Coach: Adrian Pete (3rd Season)

Current Record: 6-5

Current Ranking: No. 15 in 2A (Week 8)

Notable Wins: To'hajiilee, Reserve, Menaul, East Mountain

Tough Losses: Crownpoint, Tohatchi, Pine Hill, at Thoreau, Zuni

Key Players: Kennedi Chapman (Senior), Rachael Martin (Senior), Jayme Daniels (Senior), Wylencia Weaver (Senior)

Rundown: This Rehoboth team has had too many close wins to ignore. Now close wins don't count for much in the win column, but a one point loss at Pine Hill and at Thoreau should put this team at 8-3. Not to mention the disappointing home tournament championship lost to nearby rival Zuni. Disappointing as it may be to sit one game above .500 I believe this team has the best chance at surprising the likes of Newcomb, and Dulce. They have quality size upfront and experience in with a senior heavy lineup. They could play spoiler for the top teams in this district.

Ceiling/Floor: Second place overall / fourth place overall

Predicted Finish: Third Place overall

TSE' YI' GAI DINE WARRIORS

Head Coach: Anderson "A.D." Nezbegay (7th season)

Current Record: 7-3

Current Ranking: No. 19 in 2A (Week 8)

Notable Wins: NACA, Coronado, To'hajiilee

Tough Losses: Thoreau, Jemez Valley and Crownpoint

Key Players: Tianalee Jim (Sophomore), Kallie Trujillo (Freshman), Angel Toledo (Sophomore), and Lakoda Jim (Sophomore)

Rundown: Yes, they are young, but show a lot of potential and knack for playing hoops in the up-tempo "rez-ball" style. Still, their best offensive option has been Tianalee Jim, a 5'1" sophomore whose style of play shows how young and energetic this team is. They've got quite a ways to go. With only having two 5'8" players, they'll need every bit of defensive effort they can spare while also trying to keep with their scoring average of 54 points per game.

Ceiling/Floor: Tie for second place / fourth place overall.

Predicted Finish: Fourth place overall

NAVAJO PINE LADY WARRIORS

Head Coach: Lindsey Brown (1st Season)

Current Record: 2-10

Current Ranking: Unranked in Top 20 for 2A (Week 8)

Notable Wins: Menaul, Thoreau JV

Tough Losses: at Thoreau, at Wingate,

Key Players: Jordan Louis (Sophomore), Kalika Bryant (Senior)

Rundown: Far removed from their 2013 state championship, Navajo Pine has some potential but too much youth and lack of defense to save the season. The Lady Warriors have had a dismal time keeping in games despite their star player, Jordan Louis (no relation; different spelling) averaging 25 points per game through the first ten games of the season. The sophomore can't handle the scoring burden herself, but the defense is giving up 63 points per game. Not nearly enough to make them serious district contenders.

Ceiling/Floor: Fourth place overall / 7th Place

Predicted Finish: Tied for fifth place

NORTHWEST LADY FALCONS

Head Coach: Leon Wheeler (First season return since 2013-14 season)

Current Record: 4-5

Current Ranking: Unranked in Top 20 in 2A (Week 8)

Notable Wins: Red Valley/Cove (AZ) twice, Norwood (CO), NACA

Tough Losses: Whitehorse (UT) twice, Alamo Navajo

Key Players: Kylee DeNoyer (Senior), Jerilyn Begay (Senior)

Rundown: The roster only has three listed seniors with five freshmen, two sophomores, and an 8th grader to round out the young bunch. They're probably one if not the youngest team in the district. Despite that, they're hanging around at 4-5 which is not that bad considering where we are in the season and where they could end up. Still, the lack of any big win that catches my eye and the margin of losses show that maybe they're not ready for a run THIS season.

Ceiling/Floor: Tied for fourth place / 7th Place overall

Predicted Finish: Tied for fifth place

RAMAH LADY MUSTANGS

Head Coach: Alberta Curley (1st Season)

Current Record: 1-10

Current Ranking: Unranked in the top 20 in 2A (Week 8)

Notable Wins: Menaul

Tough Losses: Zuni (by two), Reserve (twice), at East Mountain (by three)

Key Players: Kari Kallestewa (Freshman), Shamika Maria (Sophomore)

Rundown: Remember when I said Northwest was in the running for youngest? Well if your team only lists eight players and two of them are 8th graders, I think you win that competition. It's been a rough season, but Ramah at the very least got a win on the season against Menaul at the Rehoboth Tournament. They'll be struggling for most of the season, but you never know in this district.

Ceiling/Floor: Tied for sixth place / 7th Place overall

Predicted Finish: 7th Place overall

We resume some last pre-district resume building games at the start of Week 8. Who does your team have this Tuesday night?

(4A) No. 8 Miyamura at (5A) No. 10 Farmington
The consquences of a long layover nearly cost Miyamura (9-4) at Grants last week. Now with a few days between they'll take on a Farmington (13-3) team that also had a scare at Tohatchi. Both teams could do for a win as this one will likely be a faster pace game on the race to 50.

(4A) No. 4 Pojoaque Valley at (3A) No. 2 Santa Fe Indian
Off playing six games in nine days, Pojoaque (14-2) looks to refocus after their horrendous loss to Gallup in Portales. Santa Fe Indian (14-2) hosts their former district foe and hopes to make it ten straight with a win.

No. 9 Socorro at No. 16 Bosque
The programs have yet to meet in the past 14 years or so (Maxpreps records). Bosque (7-4) is on the right side of .500 with three games this week starting with this 3A head-to-head game with Socorro (8-4). Socorro is just off of winning their own tournament and look to collect one more win before heading to Tularosa for the Tularosa Basin Telephone Company tournament.

Santa Fe at (3A) No. 8 St. Michael's
The Santa Fe rivalry hasn't had a back-to-back series winner since 2016. Santa Fe (5-10) look to rebound after a four game slide. This is St. Michael's lone game of the week before starting district play next week.

No. 16 Eldorado at No. 5 Cleveland
The first of three games this week for Eldorado (5-7) who are looking for any win at this time of the season. Cleveland (12-4) will look to avoid the trap game prior to their Thursday road game at Highland.

(4A) No. 1 Kirtland Central at (3A) No. 7 Navajo Prep
Kirtland Central (10-3) is looking to hedge their playoff resume with a 3A matchup at Navajo Prep (8-7). Navajo Prep is looking for a big win before they start district play on Saturday.

No. 6 Sandia at No. 4 La Cueva
If there's one thing Sandia (8-3) is lacking this season, it's a statement win against a Top-10 team. This is the first of three games this week for La Cueva (11-1) before they start district play next week.

(4A) No. 3 Highland at (5A) No. 8 Volcano Vista
In their first meeting this season, Highland (8-4) looks to make it three straight wins against on the road. Volcano Vista (10-3) needs this win if they want to hurdle Piedra Vista for the five-seed in the state tournament projections.

(5A) No. 11 Rio Rancho at (4A) No. 5 Gallup
Gallup (10-5) did not fair well against Los Lunas last night and now have to host their former district rival, Rio Rancho (10-6), another guard heavy team that can shoot well from the arc. It'll wrap up a tough stretch for Gallup with five games in six days.

No. 12 Onate vs. No. 17 Deming
Onate (1-1) looks to bounce back from their loss to Mayfield. Meanwhile, Deming (0-1) is still looking for their first district win.

No. 14 Centennial vs. No. 15 Las Cruces
Centennial (0-2) has lost two straight at home and now go on the road to Las Cruces (2-0) in hopes of getting their first district win.
