STATE TOURNAMENT PREDICTIONS

HOST A FIRST ROUND GAME

1. Hobbs
2. Piedra Vista
3. West Mesa
4. Carlsbad
5. La Cueva
6. Volcano Vista
7. Farmington
8. Mayfield

Fairly self explanatory. Hobbs gets the number one seed overall and will likely stay there unless they suffer some catastrophic loss to Carlsbad or Roswell/Clovis by a large margin. PV goes ahead of West Mesa after getting the district sweep. Cbad has the edge criteria wise on La Cueva. Volcano Vista jumped back ahead of Farmington after the recent shakeup in rankings. Mayfield rounds out the top 8 seeds.

NEXT FOUR
9. Sandia
10. Rio Rancho
11. Cleveland
12. Centennial

Tough draw for Sandia, but they lose to every single team ahead of them in the critera match-ups. Rio Rancho moving ahead of Cleveland also pushes back Cleveland to the 11-seed. If Cleveland can force a tie, they have a shot at regaining that 9-seed at best. Centennial is the next team from the big south to get into the top 12.

LAST FOUR IN
13. Alamogordo
14. Onate
15. Eldorado
16. Deming

For the time being, this is the draw to wrap up the selection. Deming edged Las Cruces 4-1-1 in criteria for the time being. Deming could jump ahead of Eldorado but that'll take some serious shifts in the rankings.

FIRST FOUR OUT
17. Las Cruces
18. Clovis
19. Albuquerque
20. Capital/Manzano

Notable Friday Results

Class 5A
Deming got the upset against Centennial off a Harmanie Dominguez put-back at the buzzer, 50-48.

Las Cruces stunned Onate by overcoming a 16-point fourth quarter deficit to win, 53-52.

Hobbs gets a surprisingly close win against Clovis, 47-41.

Santa Fe gets the win against Manzano, 44-37, and has the shot to finish higher than their city rival, Capital.

Class 4A
Shiprock gets the district win against Aztec, 54-51, and is now in a three-way tie for third in district with two games left to play.

Portales gets the district sweep against Goddard, 53-41 and now set their sights on Artesia.

Los Lunas defeated St. Pius X, 51-34, winning their 17th in a row, and earning their 7th district title.

Class 3A
Socorro gets the surprising dominant road win at Hatch Valley, 57-47, to have a share of first place in district.

Cuba got a much needed home win against Laguna-Acoma, 55-52, to move back into second place in district.

Class 2A
In what is the most underwhelming, underrated, exciting district in the state, Eunice got the district win against Loving, 50-49 in overtime. That results in a tie for first place between Loving and Jal at 3-1 apiece.

Class 1A
Cliff gets the win at Quemado, 53-35 and clinches first place in District 2-1A with one game left to play.

Friday's Top Player Performances

Rio Rancho's Laura Gutierrez dropped 22 points in a win against Cibola.

Lovington's Rylee Mapes earned 19 points in a loss to Artesia.

Tavyn Trujillo led Hatch Valley with 20 points in a loss to Socorro.

Tatum's Celeste Jimenez led with 20 points in a win against Dora.

TODAY'S KEY GAMES

#8 Farmington at #2 West Mesa
Currently holding steady in second place, Farmington (4-2) looks to even the score against West Mesa (3-2) on the road. West Mesa, again, looks to rebound off a Piedra Vista loss and this one may be closer than the last game. Winner moves or holds onto second place in district.

#9 Espanola Valley at #10 Los Alamos
Espanola Valley (3-3) has had too many close calls this district season and will hopefully now look to get a key win against Los Alamos (5-0). Los Alamos is holding steady in first place but only have a half game lead against Pojoaque Valley. Espanola can effectively eliminate Moriarty from tying for third with a win.

#7 Clayton at #2 Pecos
Pecos (3-1) has shown a stronger side near the end of the regular season and will have to be sure to not take Clayton (1-3) likely despite their 28-point win the last time they met. Clayton is coming off a great performance against Texico and look to even the score with Pecos on the road.

#8 Cimarron at #9 Des Moines - NMPreps.com Game of the Day/Night
Cimarron is 8-2 on the road this season and look to repeat their first district meeting with Des Moines which was a 27-point home win. After going 5-1 in that stretch since, Cimarron (4-0) is on a solid late season performance that Des Moines (4-1) has to match on the floor. Since their loss to Cimarron, Des Moines has gone 3-1 and is 5-1 at home on the season. It'll be a solid game to see today in the far north.

#12 Fort Sumner at #3 Logan
Logan (5-1) heads into the final two district games at home and is set to host a Fort Sumner team (4-2) that is looking to close out the regular season with a statement win. Logan is on a 4-game win streak while Fort Sumner hasn't lost a true road game yet (5-0). It'll be an interesting Saturday clash in Logan.

Sandia’s Gabe O’Herron-Alex Kicker

Sandia has a kicker Gabe O’Herron-Alex was ranked 48th at the Khol’s Future Stars Camp.

O'Herron-Alex recently competed at the 2019 Kohl's Future Stars Event at IMG Academy. He showed some very impressive leg strength with multiple 80+ yard kick off's. O'Herron-Alex competed at the 2018 Midwest Winter Showcase. He had a solid day and displayed solid leg strength and above average accuracy on his kicks. He scored 9 points in the field goal charting and had a big ball of 64 yards with 3.66 seconds of hang time. Creating more command of his hips through contact should help his ability to call on his "A" ball more frequently

Week 12 - Friday Fastbreak

Notable Thursday Results

-Espanola Valley held off a tough Moriarty team at home for a 59-52 win.

-Escalante defeated Mesa Vista to shake up the District 5-2A standings, 52-23.

-Texico got a close win on the road against a regrouped Clayton team, 37-34.

Thursday’s Top Player Performances

Cobre's Skkyla Guck finished with a triple double versus Hot Springs: 23 points, 16 rebounds, 11 steals and 5 assists.

Moriarty's Brooke Burch led all scorers in a loss to Espanola Valley with 18 points.

Kaylinn Martinez led Espanola Valley with 17 points in the win versus Moriarty.

Key Games Tonight

#7 Socorro at #3 Hatch Valley
It was a close one early the last time these two met but it was the second half play that got Hatch Valley (3-0) to extend their lead and close out the game. Now Socorro (2-1) will have to go on the road and try to get a tough win to get a share of first place.

#13 Portales at #11 Goddard
The wild District 4-4A gets back to it with Portales (2-1) visiting Goddard (2-1). The last time these two teams played, Portales ran Goddard out of the RAC. Goddard is just off a big win at Artesia though where freshman Alexis Sandoval led all scorers and helped Goddard keep the district race interesting.

#15 Deming at #11 Centennial
Centennial (6-4) nearly got the comeback win against Mayfield but Mayfield instead clinched first place overall. Now they'll face Deming again at home with this game and a date with Gadsden to wrap up their district run. Deming (4-5) was the team Centennial started their five game district win streak against. Deming doesn't exactly have the kindest remaining district schedule (Cen10, Mayfield, and Alamo').

#12 St. Pius X at #2 Los Lunas
Their win against Valencia on Monday gave them second place back for now, but St. Pius (4-2) still has a tall order to get a road win at Los Lunas (5-0). SPX still has the defense to play with Los Lunas, but it's the lack of an explosive offense that's hindered them from extending leads and winning a number of key games this season. Still, a win at Los Lunas is not impossible. Los Lunas goes for their 17th straight win.

#4 Cliff at #6 Quemado
Cliff (4-0) got the win at home and now have to head on the road to Quemado (2-1). Cliff had the advantage as Quemado was coming off a game played less than 24 hours prior to their meeting. Now with both teams relatively rested and Quemado boasting a 6-2 home record it should make for a more interesting game.

ALSO DON'T MISS...

#13 Onate at #17 Las Cruces - Las Cruces can make one final push to get a resume win for a tournament bid against Onate. Onate can't afford to lose or risk falling in district standings and tournament projections.

#9 Sandia at Capital - Can Capital bounce back with a key win at home? Or will Sandia continue their relentless run through district?

Valley at #3 Highland - Valley can shake things up with an upset, but given their recent struggles offensively, it may be too much to ask for. Unless, Highland has Cailee Crawford as a healthy scratch given her DNP against Academy.

#15 Newcomb at #5 Dulce - Dulce almost has district wrapped up but Newcomb can help Tse' Yi' Gai and Rehoboth Christian with a road win and district sweep of Dulce.

#13 To’hajiilee at #1 Pine Hill - To'hajiilee has a slim grasp on second place after Jemez Valley made their run and To'hajiilee got swept by Jemez Valley and still has this opening two game series against Pine Hill left to play.

Aztec - D4P
Shiprock - D5P
Bloomfield - D6P

District 2-4A

District 5-4A
Los Lunas - District Champion
St. Pius X - DRUP
Grants - D3P
Belen - T-D4P
Valencia - T-D4P

STATE TOURNAMENT PREDICTIONS

HOST A FIRST ROUND GAME
1. Kirtland Central
2. Los Lunas
3. Silver
4. Gallup
5. Highland
6. St. Pius X
7. Miyamura
8. Los Alamos

So the last time I mentioned I was confident with Los Lunas keeping the number one seed. I forgot to take into consideration the wins against Gallup and such for Kirtland Central helping their ranking. It might change but for now this is how it looks for the top two seeds.

Now onto the mess that is the 3 thru 6 seeds. Los Alamos caused a mess that forces (for the time being) Pojoaque out of the top-8. That leaves a bit of a mess for that third spot and who follows. Highland has the longest shot right now given their match-up criteria against everyone else in that group, while Gallup and Silver have the next best cases with Silver beating Gallup with criteria. I'm fairly confident in this mix because of how everyone's resumes turned out so far.

Closing it out is Miyamura which some folks may not like but they beat everyone else behind them in the criteria by at least two criteria points so there's not much room for a swing just yet. Los Alamos by way of their stunning district run closes out that top 8.

NEXT FOUR
9. Pojoaque Valley
10. Artesia
11. Portales
12. Hope Christian

Well Pojoaque fans, you didn't drop THAT far out given Los Alamos' decent resume to keep them fairly high. But this isn't exactly where you'd like to be. If the Elkettes can force a tie and share of first place, they'll likely shoot their way back up to the 5-seed while Los Alamos drops back one spot to the 9-seed.
District 4 makes their appearance with Artesia leading the way. Granted the H2H is not pretty and figuring out who jumps over who from that district was soley based off the criteria match-ups. That said, Hope doesn't have enough to move ahead of Portales or Artesia, but does have the winning criteria points to stay ahead of Goddard for now. Things can still shake up, but that Artesia loss to Los Alamos really hinders Artesia's chances of jumping ahead of Los Alamos.

BUBBLE
13. Goddard
14. Espanola Valley
15. Grants
16. Bernalillo

Two weeks ago we had three of four teams in this weeks' tournament projection OUTSIDE of the tournament field. Now with some district games sorting the line up, it provides a clearer picture. Grants is now in with I'd say a 60% confidence they'll end up in the tournament field. Bernalillo is in with I'll say 40%. No guarantees though given how the rankings could change up and the district tournament results.

FIRST FOUR OUT
17. Valley/Aztec
18. Belen
19. Moriarty
20. Shiprock

Valley has a window still open to get in if Grants doesn't win out 2 of 3 and win a game in the district tournament and Valley outperforms them through the next two weeks. Aztec then has a case where they could get in if things change up late as well but it becomes a longer shot the more Aztec doesn't win games in their district.

Week 12 - Thursday Outlet Pass

Notable Wednesday Results

-Sandia defeated Santa Fe, 77-23 and move to 7-0 in district play.

-Robertson gets the regular season district sweep against Santa Fe Indian with a 58-34 win at home.

-Albuquerque at home dominates Capital, 53-39 to extend their second place lead over the Lady Jags by 2 games with 3 games left.

-Los Lunas extends their win streak to 16-games with a 63-30 win over Belen.

Wednesday Top Players

Sandia's Viane Cumber finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds in a win against Santa Fe. Sapirah Broussard added 20 points in the win for Sandia.

Rio Rancho's Julia Chavez had 20 points in a win over Atrisco Heritage. Laura Gutierrez added 17 in the win as well.

Tonight's Key Games

Moriarty at #9 Espanola Valley
Coming off a disappointing overtime loss to Pojoaque, Espanola heads into this match-up in an effort to not slip or be upset by a Moriarty team still looking for a big district win. Moriarty
trails Espanola Valley by a 1.5 of tying for third place.

#14 Thoreau at #6 Navajo Prep
Thoreau has so far struggled to close out an close games against the top three teams in district. Prep dominated in their last meeting on the road and now get to host Thoreau in the last of their two games. If Tohatchi wants a chance at a share of first place, they're cheering for Thoreau tonight.

#19 Escalante at #16 Mesa Vista
Mesa Vista has found themselves in second place in the 2A northern district, but that doesn't mean it's going to be easy for them to hang on to it. Mesa Vista has a very, very tough stretch in their final games that include Escalante, Penasco, and Questa with Questa and Escalante sitting only a game back with four games left to play. It'll be a wild end in this district for everyone behind Penasco.

#18 Questa at #20 Mora
Questa looks to even their series with Mora after the stunning loss the last time these two teams met. Questa sits in third place tied with Escalante but has four games to make a run at second place. Mora sits two games behind second place and has plenty of games left to make a run at it. Pivotal games tonight in District 5-2A.

#1 Texico at #7 Clayton
Clayton has hopefully rediscovered their pre-Pecos loss swagger because they'll need it tonight against a Texico team that dominated in their home win the last time these two teams met. Texico is just off their classic with Pecos and look to keep this from becoming a close game given how few district games they have.

Here’s a quick recap of the district standings and district races in CLASS 4A.

DISTRICT 1-4A
Kirtland Central hasn’t clinched the district title yet, but they do have the two game advantage and sweep of Gallup. Other than Gallup, everyone else is eliminated from a share of first place. That being said, second place isn’t completely a sealed deal either with Shiprock having a chance at second place. Granted everyone will need help to get there and that includes Gallup losing, but it’s not impossible.

At the moment thought he real fight is for third place. Miyamura got the sweep of Aztec but the loss to Shiprock hurt them. Aztec is tied for third and could hurdle Miyamura which by the projections could effectively eliminate Miyamura from the tournament all together if Aztec does finish ahead of the Lady Patriots. Bloomfield not eliminated from 3rd place race but it’s looking highly unlikely.

Current Standings (10 games total)

Kirtland Central - 7-0 district; 19-3 overall

Gallup – 5-2; 17-7

Miyamura – 3-4; 14-9

Aztec – 3-4; 10-13

Shiprock – 2-5; 8-15

Bloomfield – 1-6; 11-12

Key Games Left

DISTRICT 2-4A
Well this district definitely didn’t go nearly as planned. A pre-district predicted finish of fourth place, Los Alamos burned that notion and went on a tear winning big games at Pojoaque and Espanola Valley (though technically it was NNMC). Now with a one game lead, two home games against the leaders (and a trip to Taos) Los Alamos has it relatively easy heading into the final stretch.

Pojoaque Valley is probably tired of overtime games. They’re still in the running though only sitting one game behind the leader and needing to win out to claim a share of the district title.

Espanola Valley mathematically has a shot but needing Los Alamos to lose three straight that includes a road game to Taos, EV is likely out of the running for first place. Their chances at a runner-up finish aren’t completely gone either, but it’s out of their control after losing both games to Pojoaque.

Moriarty and Taos are out of the running for first and Taos out of the second place finish. Moriarty though is only one game back of Espanola Valley with three games to go.

Current Standings (8 games total)

Los Alamos – 5-0 district; 11-12 overall

Pojoaque Valley – 4-1; 19-4

Espanola Valley – 2-3; 11-10

Moriarty – 1-4; 10-13

Taos – 0-4; 2-17

DISTRICT 3-4A
I can’t give a fair assessment here because I think we’re all fairly certain Silver will win district outright given the season Ruidoso, Santa Teresa, and Chaparral are having. But that doesn’t mean their race for a district runner-up finish won’t be exciting. Nearly all their games were below 50 points combined and it’s that kind of competitiveness that’ll keep them looking for that second place finish to Silver.

Current Standings (6 games total)

Silver – 3-0 district; 18-4 overall

Ruidoso – 2-1; 5-15

Santa Teresa – 1-2; 3-18

Chaparral – 0-3; 1-20

DISTRICT 4-4A
This district wants to do what it did last year with a three-way tie again. A a fellow NMPreps.com member pointed out, it may likely come down to who wins a road game first. They all have wins against the other and one game against Lovington. It’s tough to tell because nearly all their games against the other have not been close at all. And that’s something I hope changes this second half of district play.

Current Standings (6 games total)
Goddard – 2-1 district; 14-8 overall

Artesia – 2-1; 15-8

Portales – 2-1; 11-11

Lovington – 0-3; 7-14

DISTRICT 5-4A
This district got a little interesting after last week’s upset of Grants over St. Pius and Belen’s loss to Valencia. Both Belen and Valencia are eliminated from first place. Grants is only a half game back of SPX. But Grants is also not out of being overtaken by Valencia or Belen for third place with both Belen and Valencia being left on the schedule and only needing 2.5 games with 3 games left to jump back ahead of Grants for third place.

Current Standings (8 games total)
Los Lunas – 5-0 district; 20-3 overall

St. Pius – 4-2; 15-6

Grants – 3-2; 9-13

DISTRICT 6-4A
Mathematically, Highland hasn’t clinched first place yet, though they can with a win over Valley on Friday night and eliminate everyone else from first place. There’s a three way tie for second place at the moment, but Hope is done playing Highland and has the “easier” back end of their schedule to play. Bernalillo will need Valley to split with Hope to have a chance at keeping a share of first place. Del Norte hasn’t been eliminated yet from making a run at second place though it’s a steep hill for them to climb from. Academy has been eliminated from advancing higher than fifth place.

Current Standings (10 games total)
Highland – 7-0 district; 15-6 overall

Hope Christian – 4-3; 11-12

Bernalillo – 4-3; 13-10
