Week 11 - Saturday Swish

NOTABLE FRIDAY RESULTS

Artesia dropped 60+ on Portales in a 66-58 win to take over first place in district.

Sandia Prep got the win in Laguna-Acoma, 56-52.

Aztec nearly got the win, but a late technical cost them late and Miyamura escaped, 43-40.

Centennial survived a close one after rallying late in the fourth against Las Cruces, 35-27.

Volcano Vista used a second half rally to defeat Cleveland, 43-35.

Pojoaque Valley got the win in overtime at home against a tough Espanola Valley team, 53-52.

Cliff takes over the district lead with the win against Quemado, 53-37.

St. Pius X nearly had the comeback complete, but Grants secured the victory with a late basket to win, 47-46

TOP FRIDAY PERFORMANCES

In their loss to Artesia, Portales' Taylee Rippee posted a 38 point and 13 rebound performance.

Artesia's Brehnan Davis had 18 points against Portales in their win.

Bloomfield's Halle Payne had 31 points in their high scoring win against Shiprock.

Loving's Chasity Onsurez flirted with a near triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 steals in the win against Hagerman.

Espanola Valley's Kaylee Chavez had 24 points in their overtime loss to Pojoaque Valley.

Grants' Angel Valdez had a monster game including the go-ahead basket with 22 points and 17 boards in a win against St. Pius X

SATURDAY'S TOP GAMES

#7 La Cueva at #9 Farmington - Second half of district play begins and Farmington can get the district sweep of La Cueva with a win. La Cueva, sitting in fourth place, needs to win this if they want to jumpstart a district run.

#17 Wingate at #8 Socorro - Out-of-district wins don't come too often and both teams could use the extra game. Wingate is struggling in their district and Socorro split the week's games.

#6 Tularosa at #2 Tucumcari - Big district clash for the district leader in this district. Tucumcari is the heavy favorite but Tularosa might be a dark horse team in 3A and could make a statement with an upset on the road.

#9 Alamo Navajo at #4 Estancia - Alamo Navajo can force a share of first place in district with a win in Estancia.

#3 Pecos at #1 Texico - Another big district game for first place. Pecos stunned us all with their dominant win at Clayton. Could they do the same at Texico? Probably not by the same margin, but they put 2A on notice.

#17 To'hajiilee at #16 Jemez Valley - This is a last chance for Jemez Valley to jump back into the district race and move back ahead of To'hajiilee. Without the win, they could be missing out on a tournament bid (disregarding the district tournament).

#1 Melrose at #9 Cimarron - NMpreps.com's Game of the Day - BIG game up north when Melrose looks to bounce back from their loss to Logan and set their sights on Cimarron. Cimarron so far has dispatched Des Moines and Roy/Mosquero with relative ease. This could be the toughest game they'll have all year and they could use it to move up the seeding projections.

Daily Dimes - Saturday, February 9th

5A
Farmington (11-11) at La Cueva (12-8)
Piedra Vista (8-14) at Eldorado (14-5)

4A
Albuquerque Academy (6-13) at Los Lunas (18-3)
Bloomfield (7-14) at Shiprock (6-15)
Kirtland Central (3-16) at Gallup (16-5)
Miyamura (11-10) at Aztec (4-17)
Moriarty (3-18) at Los Alamos (5-17)
Pojoaque Valley (7-14) at Espanola Valley (13-8)

3A
Cuba (13-6) at Wingate (14-8)
Laguna-Acoma (11-11) at Cottonwood Classical Prep (1-16)
Santa Fe Indian (11-9) at West Las Vegas (9-12)
Santa Fe Prep (7-11) at Robertson (11-10)
St. Michael's (14-7) at Raton (9-12)

BIG SATURDAY THREE
Cuba (13-6) at Wingate (14-8): A poster eats more crow on this site more than I've ever seen in sports predictions (but still love he makes them) and the Cuba Rams could continue his dietary habits in this contest. Wingate falling last night takes away some of the spark to the match but Cuba could continue its argument in the top-5 ranking in 3A basketball. Cuba is putting in about 65 points per contest and if the Bears of Wingate can't manage that then it could be another upset loss in the week.

Quiet day in hoops so to fill out the top-three I'd say keep an eye on SFIS and WLV along with PVHS and EVHS in terms of local flare and attendance.

Week 11: Daily Dimes - Friday, February 8th

What You Should Watch

Carlsbad (13-9) at Hobbs (16-6):
If you click over to our NMPreps Week 11 Bracket Watch you will see a once forgot about Carlsbad Cavemen as the final team in. That could be a stretch and have played into the section because of some districts beating each other up. This one has plenty of names to know in 2019 with the combination of Jalen Young (18.3 ppg/8.2 rebounds) and Rae Tarin (15.3 ppg/7.8 assists). Tarin is coming off a 26 points and 12 assist performance. Carlsbad has Josh Silas who is putting in 23 points per game and hoping to guide the Cavemen into the postseason. Also in this district: Clovis (16-6) at Roswell (16-6).

Sandia (8-11) at Manzano (11-8): District 5-5A is like the others in beating each other up; however, in this case they are hurting their amount of at-large bids. Sandia is one of those teams (along with Capital) that are sitting at 2-3 behind Albuquerque, putting them outside the PIT stop-16. Capital NEEDS to take out Rio Grande and Santa Fe NEEDS a win at Bulldog City. Albuquerque could start the conversation for a playoff bid with a win tonight, with a 6-13 record.

Hope Christian (13-8) at Highland (12-7): Both will be locks when we take a look at the 4A bracket later today. This one is just a game to enjoy and if the hive could somehow pull off the upset, we could start thinking hosting a first-round game. One not mentioned is Josh Barraza (2020) who is putting up 9 points and 7 rebounds per game this season. He is the 2 in the 1-2 punch playing alongside Erasmo Carreon. Hope Christian will ride their Husky Four in Johnny Nitafan, Isaiah Dockery, Collin Evans, and Dru Ulibarri.

What Else On Tap Tonight

Grants (10-11) at St. Pius X (10-9): Big Bubble Game as Pius looks to rebound from 1-point loss at Grants in the first swing.

Valencia (14-8) at Belen (9-13): Are the defending champs back at full strength. This one could shake up the bracket watch.

Valley (10-9) at Bernalillo (13-7): The alignment didn't do justice to 4A basketball (should have gone with the football model) and this one puts two quality teams actually fighting for the playoffs. Who's trending?

East Mountain (11-9) at Cuba (12-6): Will this finally be the year that the Timberwolves make the playoffs? Is Cuba a top-5 team in 3A hoops? Plenty of questions happening here and we learn the deal or no deal.

Wingate (14-7) at Navajo Prep (14-7): Navajo Prep has been on a free fall as of late. Wingate looking to secure a top-8 spot and DC.

Jal (11-10) at Eunice (10-8): A bubble-ish type of contest and will we see Daniel Jones (Jal) guide the Panthers in a must-win? He is putting in 16 points per contest.

This Friday night is LOADED with a ton of quality hoop action throughout the state. But first we look over last night's interesting results and key performances.

NOTABLE THURSDAY RESULTS

#10 Sandia defeated #18 Manzano, 58-39 to take a 6-0 lead in district.

#3 Highland got the win at #7 Hope Christian, 55-47 and take a 6-0 district lead.

#19 Bernalillo got an all-important district road in at #17 Valley, 37-34.

#15 Rehoboth Christian keeps their district title hopes alive with a 55-34 win at #13 Newcomb.

#9 Cimarron wins at #11 Roy/Mosquero, 59-56 to take a 3-0 district lead.

#3 Logan wins at home and stuns #1 Melrose, 43-40 to stay alive in the race for a share of the district title.

#4 Quemado gets the district sweep of #7 Animas with a win, 56-51.

THURSDAY'S TOP PLAYERS

Sandia's Sapirah Broussard finished with 17 points in a win against Manzano. Viane Cumber added 16 of her own in the win as well.

Mescalero Apache's Fallon Velasquez finished with 28 points in a win over Capitan. Tunte Baca added 21 points in the win as well.

Zuni's Kaitlin Romancito and Tohatchi's Cameron Tsosie dueled in a district clash that finished with Romancito leading all scorers with 24 points and Tsosie with 23 points plus the win.

FRIDAY NIGHT GAMES

#1 Hobbs at #4 Carlsbad - NMPreps.com Game of the Week
Huge game down south as we finally get some district action and it shouldn't disappoint. Hobbs (21-1; 2-0) comes in #1 after West Mesa lost last week and on a 13-game winning streak. Carlsbad (20-2; 2-0) comes in on a 15-game winning streak. We've seen plenty of upsets through the past few weeks. Could Carlsbad get the win at home? Or is Hobbs going to run away with this one?

Player Watch:
Hobbs - Amiah Smith (Sr), Wisdom Anthony (8th), Ayanna Smith (Sr), MacKenzye Gibson (Sr)
Carlsbad - Carsyn Boswell (Sr), Kaliyah Montoya (Jr), Destiny Young (Sr), Teran Tiller (Jr)

#5 Volcano Vista at #8 Cleveland
Cleveland (15-7; 2-2) suffered a bad beat at Rio Rancho on Wednesday. Not exactly the way they want to head into this game with Volcano Vista (16-4; 4-0). Can the Storm overcome Wednesday's loss and focus getting the upset over the Lady Hawks? Or will Bates and Chavez run rampant offensively?

Player Watch: Volcano Vista's Jaelyn Bates and Natalia Chavez. Cleveland's Desiree Forster and Kaylee Caldwell.

#5 Gallup at #2 Kirtland Central
KC (17-3; 5-0) can get a huge step towards a district sweep with a win over a tough Gallup (16-6; 4-1) squad that hasn't slowed down once since their loss to KC at home. Gallup has been surging as of late, so I'm putting KC on upset watch tonight. A Gallup win and they have a share of first place barring a loss. This one will be a race to 50 as both teams will probably play a little tighter and more sound defensively.

Player Watch: Kirtland Central's Tatelyn Manheimer and Avery Begay. Gallup's Ashley Antone, Cearra Williams, and Jordan Hanley.

#11 Espanola Valley at #4 Pojoaque Valley
This last time these two teams met it was a district opening thriller. Now, Espanola Valley (11-9; 2-2) make one last run at Pojoaque (18-4; 3-1) to at least position themselves in second place. Pojoaque is looking to rebound from their stunning loss at home against Los Alamos and within Ben Lujan's fanatics they'll get another chance to build on their record. This is definitely a MUST-SEE game if both crowds show out. Quality teams in this one here.

Player Watch: Pojoaque's Michaela Martinez and Ashten Martinez. Espanola Valley's Kaylinn Martinez and Kaylee Chavez.

#14 Portales at #10 Artesia
If you caught Portales' (10-10; 1-0) last game against Goddard, you might've seen them run up and down the floor on their way to a big win to start district play. That may or may not be the game plan this time around against an Artesia (14-7; 1-0) squad that loves to get up and down the floor. This one might turn around and be one of those super rare high scoring affairs between the two teams. If Artesia can score more than 36 points, it'll be the highest Portales has allowed in their last four meetings, all four of which Portales has won.

Player Watch: Artesia's Paityn Houghtaling, Brehnan Davis, and Kyrah Gonzales. Portales' Taylee Rippee, Mattison Blakey, and Kinzie Davis.

#10 Sandia Prep at #13 Laguna-Acoma
Big game here for the district race. First and foremost, Sandia Prep (10-10; 5-0) leads the district undefeated and has turned around their season with a big run in their district including their big win last week at Cuba. Second, Laguna-Acoma (10-10; 4-1) is still in the race thanks to their win over Cuba at home which is their leading advantage heading into this game. Despite sharing the same overall record with Sandia Prep, LA actually has an impressive 5-1 record at home with their lone loss against top-ranked Santa Fe Indian. Big game tonight for first place in district.

Player Watch: Sandia Prep's Destiny Archibald, and Samantha Jeffries. Laguna-Acoma's Jasmine Kie and Jacine Bahe.

#4 Quemado at #5 Cliff
Quemado (17-5; 2-0) just completed the district sweep of Animas and now move on to try to do the same against Cliff (15-6; 2-0). Quemado may have a difficult time with the 4PM tip-off scheduled especially with the Animas game last night. But it's a great test as they have this road game this week at Cliff and then a week from today the home game against Cliff. Meanwhile, Cliff hopes they can keep their momentum going forward after their win last weekend and the long rest prior to this game. This should be a fun series between the two teams.

Player Watch: Cliff's Kaitlyn Trotter and Jamie Jenkins. Quemado's Samantha Bryant and Angela Lackey.

Don't Sleep On These Critical Games Too...

#16 Deming at #11 Onate - Deming has put together two straight wins while Onate has two straight losses. Deming can jump ahead of Onate with the win.

#20 Atrisco Heritage at Cibola - Atrisco Heritage can complete the district sweep against a seemingly revitalized Cibola.

#15 Aztec at #12 Miyamura - It was a close one last time, and now Miyamura is in a precarious position of possibly losing their third place spot if they lose this one at home.

#13 Los Alamos at Moriarty - These two went into OT at the cold mesa in LA last time they met. Moriarty could do Pojoaque and Espanola a favor with the upset despite being 6-10 at home.

Lovington at #8 Goddard - Winner moves to third place and after their games on Tuesday. But I'm not quite sure who will win this one.

#9 St. Pius X at Grants - Can The Port help plunder another district foe to help Grants climb the district ladder and make a case for an at-large bid for the state tournament field?

#15 Cobre at #8 Socorro - Cobre's Skkyla Guck could lead the upset here at Socorro.

STATE TOURNAMENT PREDICTIONS

HOST A FIRST ROUND GAME

1. Melrose
2. Logan
3. Tatum
4. Pine Hill
5. Quemado
6. Cliff
7. Animas
8. Elida

Logan was actually the clear number one by resume, but with the district standings they fell behind Melrose. Melrose was actually in a three-way tie for the 2-seed with Tatum and Pine Hill, but I'm kind of projecting out on the Maxpreps rankings a bit and the coaches' poll to give Melrose that push to the top spot. Tatum gets the H2H against Pine Hill and the top four look solid. Could see some mixing maybe late but I like this order going forward provided Logan only loses to Melrose and there's no shocking losses. That District 2 is a VERY strong district but they don't have the resumes to jump into that Top Four without one of those top four teams losing multiple games down the stretch. Elida is clinging to that 8th spot.

NEXT FOUR
9. Cimarron
10. Des Moines
11. Fort Sumner
12. Roy/Mosquero

The northern district is well represented but unfortunately will have to likely travel in the first round (provided Elida doesn't drop in rankings). Cimarron leads the district and could see themselves jump to the eighth-seed but they'll need to steer clear of any upsets from Roy/Mosquero or Des Moines. Fort Sumner did enough to get into that mix at the 11-seed.

BUBBLE
13. Dora
14. Gateway Christian
15. Hondo Valley
16. To'hajiilee

Jemez Valley should actually be in that 13/14-seed area but they've fallen back in the district standings. That allowed Dora, Gateway, and Hondo to jump ahead. The current district runner-up, To'hajiilee gets the last tournament slot.

FIRST FOUR OUT
17. Walatowa Charter
18. Jemez Valley
19. Mountainair
20. Maxwell

Walatowa and Jemez need to make moves in district to jump ahead of To'hajiilee and get into the tournament. Mountainair has the next best shot if they can earn a win or two and split the go-ahead tie with rankings to jump ahead of a Walatowa Charter.

Scholarship "offers"

This article is a reminder that a scholarship offer is fairly meaningless until a letter of intent is signed: https://www.si.com/college-football..._campaign=si-ncaafb&xid=socialflow_twitter_si

From the article:
Over the last eight recruiting cycles, Power 5 schools made more than 101,000 football scholarship offers in order to fill about 12,000 available scholarships. For the 2019 cycle alone, the 65 programs made more than 15,000 scholarship offers in order to secure what is expected be about 1,600 signees. That’s an average of about 237 offers per school per year.

In what is believed to be a first for a college program, Louisville hit the 400-offer mark in 2017, and six programs have delivered at least 400 offers this year. One-fifth of Power 5 teams handed out at least 300 offers this cycle, for classes that do not often exceed 25 members. Tennessee and Syracuse each distributed more than 440 offers this cycle.

"One major college staff member described a scholarship offer as a reservation at a restaurant. 'The reservation doesn’t mean s--- until you show up at the restaurant,' he says. 'Certain restaurants will hold your table. Others, 30 seconds after you’re not there, will give away your seat.'”

NOTABLE WEDNESDAY RESULTS

#14 Rio Rancho defeated #8 Cleveland, 46-32

#5 Volcano Vista defeated #20 Atrisco Heritage, 65-48

#15 Eldorado defeated Cibola, 43-35

WEDNESDAY'S TOP PLAYERS

Volcano Vista's Natalia Chavez had 31 points and Jaelyn Bates added 24 of her own in a win versus Atrisco Heritage

Rio Rancho's Julia Chavez led all scorers with 14 points in a win versus Cleveland. Kelsie Hawkins had 13 points and Laura Gutierrez added 11 points for the Lady Rams in the win as well.

Cleveland's Kaylee Caldwell led Cleveland with 13 points versus Rio Rancho.

Eldorado's Colexi Brazier led with 13 points in a win versus Cibola.

Cibola's Aurelia Haskie led the Lady Cougars with 11 points against Eldorado.

TONIGHT'S GAMES TO WATCH

#18 Manzano at #10 Sandia
Manzano (9-10; 3-2) heads down the street to Sandia (13-6; 5-0) in hopes of getting the late district upset over the clear number one team in the district. The Monarchs Mya Williams is one of the best shooters in the class and will undoubtedly be a focus of Sandia's defense. That's why if Manzano wants a chance to upset, they'll need more than Williams to play well offensively to keep pace with Sandia's offensive talent in Sapirah Broussard and Viane Cumber.

#3 Highland at #7 Hope Christian
Highland (13-6; 5-0) can likely clinch first place overall in district with this win over the only likely challenger for a district title in Hope Christian (11-10; 4-1). The Crawfords are the best duo with the clear mismatch, but they've been getting quality contributions from across the roster. Hope Christian is due for a big game against a tough opponent especially at home where they tend to play their best ball (stunning analysis, I know). But if they want a chance to get a share of the district title, they'll need this game.

#5 West Las Vegas at #4 Santa Fe Indian
West Las Vegas (13-8; 1-3) suffered a surprising setback with their home loss to St. Michael's which set them back to 4th place in the district standings. Now they head on the road for a key game against Santa Fe Indian (19-3; 3-1). Santa Fe Indian has been on a nice win streak while suffering only one loss to Robertson (twice this season with one more game to go against the Lady Cards').

#10 Magdalena at #4 Estancia
Estancia (14-4; 4-0) has surprised a few in 2A getting the lead in the district and has a great shot at home to get a lead on first place overall with a win against Magdalena (12-8; 3-1). Magdalena behind Kourtney Lewis and Nicole Bilbo look to bounce back after their surprisingly lone district loss at Alamo Navajo .

#7 Animas at #4 Quemado
Animas (14-7; 0-2) looks to even the series against Quemado (16-5; 1-0) after their four point home loss to the Lady Eagles less than a week ago. They'll have to make the four hour drive north for a chance to get the win and more importantly get a "1" in the district win column. Quemado has found a nice rhythm and it's so far lead to them a six game winning streak at the perfect time.

#1 Melrose at #3 Logan
No Karli Webb and Logan (17-4; 3-1) struggled to close out Fort Sumner in their last district game. This time Logan has district leading Melrose and their last shot at a share of first in district before having to rely on help from another district foe. Melrose (15-5; 4-0) is 19-11 since 2006 against Logan, and look to make it three straight wins against their district opponent to pretty much clinch district outright.

A few close game picks...

- #9 Cimarron at #11 Roy/Mosquero - The Lady Blues have a shot to make things interesting in district with a win at home against a Cimarron team who blew out Des Moines just last week.

- #19 Bernalillo at #17 Valley - The last game was decided by one in Berna'. This one is fixin' to be just as dramatic as the last one especially since it's in Valley. Bernalillo looking to even the district series.

- #16 Thoreau at #12 Crownpoint - Crownpoint survived their last meeting but this time do they have enough to overcome a Thoreau team looking to steal any district game they can? Another close one here.

- #15 Rehoboth Christian at # Newcomb - Rehoboth nearly stunned Pecos last week and with the win over a co-district leader Tse' Yi' Gai, they got a shot at making more district upward movement with a tough road game in Newcomb.

- #20 Mesa Vista at #16 Mora - District 5-2A has four teams tied for second place at 2-2. Mesa Vista and Mora are two of those four teams. This small northern hoops game should be a fun watch.

ONE LAST THING - Keep an eye out later this morning for a long overdue Pit Stop for a look at projections in Class 1A. Expect the 2A Pit Stop before Sunday.

As always feel free to share your picks, games to see, player watch, etc.!

Thursday Daily Dimes

5A: No. 3 Volcano Vista vs No. 5 Cleveland
4A: No. 7 Espanola Valley vs No. 9 Taos

Scoop: Not many games taking place on a snowy Thursday morning in New Mexico. The third ranked Hawks and fifth ranked Storm have met twice this season with both teams coming out with a 1-point win. Cleveland took the first round early in January 71-70 in the APS Metro Championship. Volcano Vista a 58-57 win to open district on January 22nd. The Storm will need a bigger game from top player Jalen Munn (2019) who was held to 9 and 2 points in the first two meetings; he's averaging 15 points per contest this season.
