It's another tournament filled weekend with tournament hoops in Cuba, to Portales, across to Socorro, back up to Rehoboth, and then to Estancia. With Metro hoops resuming on Friday, it's time for everyone outside of Albuquerque to get back on the hardwood. Here's some notable matchups you should look forward to on Thursday.

GAME OF THE AFTERNOON (3:30 PM Tip-Off)
(4A) No. 1 Pojoaque Valley vs. (5A) No. 3 Carlsbad

This one should be a fun matchup. I'm not quite sure Pojoaque (13-0) has the guards to stay in front of the quick Carsyn Boswell, but they do have Ashten Martinez and Tonni Aquino to double down on Carlsbad's Kaliyah Montoya. Carlsbad (11-2) also has Terran Tiller, Baylee Molina, and Jordan Boatwright on the roster to help match with their size and pace. All this to say Pojoaque can play slow down pace hoops too. Pojoaque's Micaela Martinez, and Taylor Roybal take relatively good care of the ball and can hit shots from the perimeter. The game might be a race to 40.

STREAK ENDS? - (3A) No. 7 Tularosa at (2A) No. 6 Mescalero Apache
In the past, this has usually been a good game but as far as history goes, it's been a little lopsided. Tularosa (7-5) has dominated this meeting with a 15-3 record versus Mescalero (9-2) since 2007. That includes their current six-game winning streak against the Lady Chiefs. Tulie is off a thrashing of Ruidoso which is much of the same result Mescalero had against Chaparral. This game might be closer than anticipated by both teams, but Mescalero has real shot at a win, which would be their first against the Lady Wildcats since December 2011

SPX ROAD TEST (PART 2) - (4A) No. 5 St. Pius at (4A) No. 10 Goddard
It was a very tough loss on the road at Pojoaque for St. Pius. Now St. Pius (7-3) will have a quick turnaround and have to contend with a very successful Goddard (9-5) team that's been playing very well their last few games. The Lady Rockets are 3-1 at home so far this season and are coming off a two game road trip. Besides Goddard's Bailey Beene look to contributions from freshman guard Alexis Sandoval and senior PJ Villareal to help create opportunities against this Pius defense.

GAME OF THE NIGHT
(2A).No. 2 Magdalena at (3A) No. 3 Hatch Valley

This is definitely an underrated matchup between two top teams in their respective classes. Magdalena (7-4) is off a stunning road loss to Quemado and will look to turn it around on the road again at Hatch (12-3). Back-to-back losses and Hatch immediately shook that off with a win at Santa Teresa. This game is critical for both teams especially considering they're each facing a likely district favorite. Keep tabs on Magdalena's Kourtney Lewis, Nicole Bilbo, and Shondiin Billy. Hatch Valley's Tavyn Trujillo will lead the charge along with Maddison Williams and Makayla Villegas. I'm going to say whoever gets to 50 first will win this game.

UNDERDOG AT HOME - (4A) No. 9 Gallup at (4A) No. 11 Portales
Gallup (8-3) has been all over the rankings, and this is the farthest they've been from their previous preseason number one spot. Portales (6-6) much in the same boat has also fallen out of the top ten. Gallup is a likely more healthy as Portales has been on a the struggle bus as of late riddled with injuries and still missing Taylee Rippee from the lineup. With Gallup heavily favored in this matchup, it's up to the guards to handle the pace of play that Gallup will likely force Portales to play. Besides Gallup's Ashley Antone and Portales' Codi Flores, be sure to keep an eye on Gallup's freshman Hailey Long and Portales' sophomore Mattison Blakey.

UPSET WATCH - Newcomb at Shiprock
Newcomb (5-7) has probably never beaten Shiprock (4-8). Well, Shiprock is having one of their worst seasons in program history and this could be the one for Coach Bill McLaughlin and his team to steal on the road. Watch Newcomb's Hanna Begay look to led the Lady Skyhawks against Shiprock's towering Lansing sisters.

TIGER TRAP - Aztec at Moriarty
Since starting 2-8, Aztec (6-9) has gone on to win four of their last five. Can they sustain that on the road against a struggling Moriarty (7-7) hungry for a win? Aztec's senior post Reigan Weaver matches up well with Moriarty's Brooke Burch and Meredith Wilson. The game will be won in the paint.

ARAGON ROAD SHOW- Bernalillo at (3A) No. 5 West Las Vegas
Bernalillo's freshman star Juliana Aragon has been on a tear and picked up where she left off after the winter break with a 29-point outburst in their last game against Socorro. West proved to be capable of getting a big win on the road, but this time they'll face a tougher defensive test at home against Aragon and the Lady Spartans.

APS Metro Championship
doKNQzl.png

Who is Top-5: Rio Rancho vs Atrisco. This is the opportunity for either team to climb into the top of 5A basketball conversation. It also brings a battle between two of the top-10 players in the state - Rio Rancho's David Patterson (2019) vs Atrisco's Joziah Ramos (2020)

More Likely... Scare: West Mesa will take on the Volcano Vista Hawks and most would bet heavy on VV to win this contest. Could the Mustangs shoot their way into a tight game?

Trap Game: Eldorado ranked in the top-5 of 5A basketball gets the Hope Christian Huskies (4A) in a game that could either favor the Eagles or provide us the first "upset" of the APS bracket.

Best of the Left Side: Manzano will take on Cibola tonight but look to be in position that could have them winning out the rest of the week. Albuquerque High battled with 3-seed Eldorado last night and could be on the rise?

Week Seven - Tuesday Night Lineup

A seemingly long winter break has come to a close as teams bolster up their resumes for March. Tuesday night is jam packed with just over 40 games statewide! That includes regular season games, the Albuquerque Metro tournament, and the start of District 3-5A (Preview Here). Now, here's a few of the notable nightly matchups you should keep an eye on. (Feel free to comment one or two if you know of one I missed!)

(5A) No. 15 Deming at (4A) No. 7 Silver
Deming (11-2) has the night off while the rest of their district starts their play tonight. Deming has the opportunity to nab another win versus a district champ as they've already beaten Silver (9-4) earlier this season. But as was the case with Artesia, Deming might have some trouble the second time around. Silver is far more confident having played a tough Sandia Prep tournament field. Now they'll likely look to the guard lineup to help Katelynn Limardo. LeAsiah Jaure is a definite playmaker for Silver City. Keep an eye on Harmanie Dominguez of Deming too. The freshman has played outstanding so far this season.

(5A) No. 18 Bloomfield at Durango (CO)
Bloomfield (4-3) is one of those few teams who haven't even gotten to double digit games played yet! It's early January and their scheduled is loaded from now until March. The Lady Bobcats will head to Durango to face the Aztec's Rumble in the Jungle champions. Keep an eye on junior, Halle Payne as she's the key option for Bloomfield in this matchup. A solid start here is important for Bloomfield. January can be icy and a fall can hurt.

(3A) No. 5 West Las Vegas at (4A) No.16 Moriarty
A great inter-class matchup here as West (7-3) off their victory in Tularosa get a shot at a Moriarty (7-6) team who got two solid wins in the Sandia Prep tournament. Briana Marquez and the Lady Dons may have some trouble stopping the tough post players in Brooke Burch and Meredith Wilson.

Roswell at (4A) No.11 Portales
Roswell (2-8) has improved their play significantly and this game could be a telling result of where Portales (5-6) is heading into the week they're hosting their round-robin tournament. Roswell is also looking to finally shake off a five-game losing streak.

(2A) No. 2 Magdalena at (1A) No. 7 Quemado
Quemado (7-4) was stunned at home against Alamo Navajo. Now the Lady Eagles will get one more home game before hitting the road for another tournament. This time though it'll be against a top-ranked Magdalena (7-3) team fresh off a two game, .500 performance at SENAI.

(5A) No. 12 Farmington at (4A) No. 3 Kirtland Central
If you like runnin' gunnin' high scoring games, this one is for you. Both teams know how to put on an offensive outbursts but I expect this to be a bit grueling to start. Both teams feature similar talents and have found winning strategies so far this season. For now, this win means more to Farmington (12-2) (a win versus a district champ) than Kirtland (9-3). Still, you can't expect for KC to let one slide at home. The race to 50 is on in this one.

(4A) No. 5 St. Pius at (4A) No. 1 Pojoaque Valley
Oh this might be my favorite matchup in Class 4A. Two top teams in St. Pius (7-2) and Pojoaque Valley (12-0), and it was thankfully rescheduled after weather postponed the original date. SPX is one of the most defensively sound teams I've seen this season, and they do a great job guarding the paint. For Pojoaque it may come down to guard play again and defensive points off turnovers. St. Pius is no slouch, especially after stealing a tight game late in Gallup. If this is still a one possession game in the fourth, we may have to put the Elkettes on upset watch.

District Game To Watch: (5A) No. 13 Onate at (5A) No. 11 Centennial
This will be a great game to see if Onate (7-6) has what it takes to compete with a talented team like Centennial (7-7). For Centennial, they'll have to maintain the lead and hopefully put away the Lady Knights early in the first half. Estrella Avalos versus Dianne Hefner is going to be a fun matchup to see. For Onate, they can't turn the ball over and have to be able to score in transition and get to the free throw line.

Metro Tournament Game To Watch: (4A) No.8 Hope Christian vs. (4A) No.4 Highland
It's a free preview of what's to come from two top teams in their district. Highland (5-3) has the supposed edge now, but Hope Christian (2-7) has been hungry for a win. The Crawford sisters matching up against the likes of Hayley Valencia and Savannah Lewis is going to be a fun one to see. The difference will be of course, how much of a contribution teams get from their role players.

With district action kicking off tonight for the big district down south, here's a preview of what to watch for.

PREDICTED FINISH
1st - Mayfield
2nd - Centennial
T-3rd - Onate
T-3rd - Deming
T-5th - Alamogordo
T-5th - Las Cruces
7th Gadsden

MAYFIELD LADY TROJANS

Head Coach: George Maya (21st season)

Current Record: 9-5

Current Ranking: No. 8 in 5A (Week 7)

Notable Wins: Eldorado, Hope Christian, Cleveland, Rio Rancho

Tough Losses: Hobbs, La Cueva, West Mesa, Carlsbad, Los Lunas (all top four teams)

Key Players: Alize Ruiz (Senior), Brenda Prieto (Senior), Laila Flores (Junior), Alyssa Madrid (Senior)

Rundown: In my opinion, Mayfield is the favorite to win this district. They don’t quite have the size they’ve had in the past, or at least in a scoring sense, but their rotation is one of the best and deepest in 5A. They run guard heavy lineups and have the mobility and shooting to be able to compete with almost any team in the state. Great defensive quickness and basketball instincts, this team is a right in the mix to host a first round game.

Ceiling/Floor: First place finish overall/Slip and stumble back into second place

Predicted Finish: First Place overall

CENTENNIAL LADY HAWKS

Head Coach: Louie Laborin (2nd season)

Current Record: 7-7

Current Ranking: No. 11 in 5A (Week 7)

Notable Wins: Los Lunas, Piedra Vista

Tough Losses: Eldorado, Rio Rancho (twice), Cleveland

Key Players: Jessica Rios (Junior), Dianne Hefner (Senior), Andreana Armendariz (Junior), Larissa Laborin (Freshman)

Rundown: Centennial is the “almost” team this season. They almost beat Rio Rancho on both occasions, and almost beat Cleveland at Cleveland. They’re a quality competitive team that has shown they can outplay teams for at least a half. But some poor finishes have cost them a few games that should be in the win column. For now, they’ll have a shot at redemption. They’re a long team with not a lot of speed, but good pace and play that competes with at least the mid-tier of 5A. If they can manage turnovers, and maintain grips on leads, then they’re surely the team to beat in District 3-5A.

Ceiling/Floor: First place overall / Slip to mess at third place

Predicted Finish: Second place overall

ONATE LADY KNIGHTS

Head Coach: Evelyn Reyes (3rd season)

Current Record: 7-6

Current Ranking: No. 13 in 5A (Week 7)

Notable Wins: Silver, Las Cruces

Tough Losses: at Sandia, Cleveland, La Cueva, Rio Rancho

Key Players: Estrella Avalos (Senior), Sydney Hobbs (Sophomore), Angel Jones (Sophomore)

Rundown: Onate is young but showed some potential at Academy’s tournament. They don’t quite have the big win yet (besides against LC), but they’re showing they’re on the rise with the talents of Hobbs and Jones. The key for them is defense. Their roster is not very deep, and they need Jones and Avalos on the floor for the offense. If they can stay ahead of teams in transition and keep their turnovers low, they’ll be right in the mix for possibly second place in the district.

Ceiling/Floor: Tied for second place / Fall to fifth place

Predicted Finish: Tied for third place

ALAMOGORDO LADY TIGERS

Head Coach: Manny Vigil (3rd season)

Current Record: 10-2

Current Ranking: No. 14 in 5A (Week 7)

Notable Wins: Tularosa, Navajo Prep, at Belen

Tough Losses: Piedra Vista, Los Lunas, Cibola

Key Players: Faith Silva (Senior), Breyanna Bickham (Senior), Justyse Martin (Sophomore), Calysta Jacob (Senior)

Rundown: Alamogordo is right in the “so-so” pack of the middle tier group. They just recently picked up a “bad” loss after a dismal performance against Los Lunas, they drop another to low-end tier Cibola. Now the Lady Tigers can change all that with their tough district full of teams right in the playoff picture. A few key wins here and there and they’ll be back in the talks at a playoff run. They’ve got the size and stellar play behind guard Faith Silva to make a run in district play. But they’ll need more than Silva to contribute on the offensive end to keep slow-paced teams at bay.

Ceiling/Floor: Third Place overall / Sixth place overall

Predicted Finish: Tied for fifth place

DEMING WILDCATS

Head Coach: Kimberly Garcia (1st season)

Current Record: 11-2

Current Ranking: No. 15 in 5A (Week 7)

Notable Wins: Penasco, Silver, at Artesia

Tough Losses: at Artesia

Key Players: Harmanie Dominguez (Freshman), Adriana Giron (Senior), Vanessa Garcia (Senior)

Rundown: Deming is off to one of their best starts in their program’s history. They’re actually on pace to a winning record not seen since Jerome Sandoval’s tenure as head coach. But that’s if they can play well against one of the best districts in 5A. Deming has one of the tallest rosters in the state and that includes their latest freshman sensation in 5’10” Harmanie Dominguez. The Lady Wildcats have a lot to prove especially against traditional regional powers like Mayfield and Las Cruces, and rising ones like Onate and Centennial. If the Lady Wildcats can maintain their level of play and dig deep into their roster, they’ll be looking to steal some games this district season.

Ceiling/Floor: Tied for second place / Could fall into a tie for sixth place.

Predicted Finish: Tied for third place

LAS CRUCES LADY BULLDAWGS

Head Coach: Matt Abney (14th season)

Current Record: 6-8

Current Ranking: No. 19 (Week 7)

Notable Wins: Manzano, Clovis, Espanola Valley

Tough Losses: Sandia, Piedra Vista, Onate

Key Players: Christina Aguayo (Junior), Jaci Powers (Freshman), Destiny Ortega (Destiny Ortega), Shooty Molinar (Junior), Alexia Gonzalez (Senior)

Rundown: Las Cruces graduated a wealth of talent that included all five starters from last season’s team. Now they’re in a bit of a rebuild (or reload) with eight juniors. One of those juniors, Christina Aguayo, has been stellar in trying to lead the inexperienced roster through a tough half of the season. Despite not picking up an upset over a top ranked team yet, the Lady Bulldawgs are still in the hunt for a playoff spot with their district having a number of highly ranked teams in Mayfield and Centennial. It won’t be easy for Las Cruces, but if they can get contributions on defense and offense from more than Aguayo, the Lady Bulldawgs could been punching a ticket to the big dance in March.

Ceiling/Floor: Third place finish / Sixth place finish

Predicted Finish: Tied for fifth place

GADSDEN LADY PANTHERS

Head Coach: Ana Valtierra (3rd season)

Current Record: 1-9

Current Ranking: Unranked (Outside Top-20 of 5A)

Notable Wins: Faith Christian (EP-TX)

Tough Losses: at Roswell, at Silver, at Hatch Valley, at Artesia

Key Players: Anabel Soto (Senior), Brianna Ramos (Senior), Anahi Llanez (Senior)

Rundown: Gadsden has a tough hill to climb. Despite their record, they’re technically not out of playoff contention yet with the automatic bid granted to the team who wins the district tournament. Still, Gadsden is facing some tough competition in their district. If they’re looking for a win, it might outside of their district play.

Ceiling/Floor: Maybe tie for fifth place/Seventh place.

Predicted Finish: Seventh place overall.
