Dear NMAA

To whom it may concern,

On this glorious state championship Saturday, 30 minutes prior to kickoff, I’m enjoying black screen. How in the world is there no pregame, coaches interviews, insight through the season etc..? Once again, if KSVP was in charge of this, they would have been on air an hour before kickoff with in person pre recorded coaches interviews, sideline reporting and season stats for both teams.
With all do respect so better for your schools, fans and most importantly the kids.
Sincerely,
Tired of proview and NFHS network

Grine's Daily Dimes - Wednesday, December 11

Not much on the menu for a Wednesday night as teams prep for another weekend of basketball tournaments. However, here are a couple of games to keep an eye on tonight:

St. Michael's (1-4) at Taos (1-3), 5:30 PM
The St. Michael's Horsemen are coming off a gritty 60-57 win over Capital last night, following a challenging trip to Denver, Colorado, where they faced tough competition. Tonight, they hit the road again to take on Taos. For Taos, Julianna Flores has been the go-to player, averaging 15 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, making her a dominant force in the paint. St. Michael's counters with inside presence from Elsie Odai, who averages 6 points and 8 rebounds per game.

St. Pius X (1-2) at Eldorado (0-2), 7 PM
St. Pius X is looking to rebound after a tough start to the season. After a 42-32 win over Los Alamos in their opener, they’ve dropped back-to-back games to La Cueva (59-49) and Kirtland Central (65-35). Eldorado is also searching for momentum after losses to Volcano Vista (68-35) and Los Lunas (69-38). Both teams will aim to turn things around in tonight’s matchup.

Daily Dimes – Week 3 – Tuesday, December 10

Publisher Joshua Grine’s Daily Blog on New Mexico High School Basketball

Tuesday night hoops are here, and the New Mexico high school basketball slate is packed with intriguing matchups that could shape early-season narratives. Let’s dive into the top games to watch, the storylines, and predictions as we edge closer to the holidays.

Tuesday's Specials On Tap

Santa Fe (3-0) at Atrisco Heritage (2-2), 7 PM

Grine’s Deal or No Deal Game of the Night

  • Why Watch: In a premier 5A matchup, the 7th-ranked Atrisco Heritage Jaguars host the 11th-ranked Santa Fe Demons in a game with early postseason implications. This weeks Grine’s Deal or No Deal Game is a December staple, often shaping the top seed conversation for the March State Tournament.

The Jaguars are coming off a tough loss to Organ Mountain (83-61), a setback that highlighted defensive inconsistencies. Head coach Steve Heredia has built an offense capable of scoring in bunches, but defensive stops remain a work in progress. Tonight offers an opportunity for a key bounce-back performance.

Meanwhile, Santa Fe enters with momentum, riding high off a strong showing at their home tournament, which included resume wins over Santa Fe Indian and Farmington. Year two under head coach Francisco Rivera is mirroring last year’s hot start, with the Demons leaning heavily on their dynamic offensive duo of Christian Herrera (2025) and Joe Gonzales (2025).
  • NMPreps Favorite: Atrisco Heritage, -4.5
  • Grine’s Take: This game is likely to go down to the wire. Santa Fe’s recent close wins could either fuel their confidence or result in a fatigue hangover. Atrisco’s high-tempo offense will be a critical factor, and this game should provide valuable insight into both teams' trajectories. Expect a physical, hard-fought battle that sets the tone for December hoops.

Hobbs (5-0) at Texas-San Angelo Central (9-2), 6 PM

  • Why Watch: Hobbs takes its high-octane style on the road to Texas, facing a San Angelo Central team with similar scoring firepower. The Eagles, ranked No. 3 in the 5A NMPreps Power-12, are led by Abraham Peña (2025), who’s been electric on both ends, averaging 17 points, 4 steals, and 3 assists per game. The depth of this Hobbs team, with six players averaging 7+ points, makes them tough to beat. However, the Bobcats have home-court advantage and an impressive 9-2 record.
  • Favorite: Texas-San Angelo Central, -2.5
  • Grine’s Take: This could be a track meet, with both teams pushing the pace. Hobbs’ defense will be key if they want to remain unbeaten.

Grants (3-0) at St. Michael's (2-2), 7 PM

  • Why Watch: In a clash between top 4A/3A programs, 4A No. 5 Grants brings their sharpshooting offense to the tight, intense environment of St. Michael's Perez-Shelley gym. The 3A No. 2 Horsemen will rely on their size, with standout big men Noah Redus (2027), Ryan Hunt (2027), and Donevan Ricker (2026) controlling the paint. Grants must execute from the perimeter, while St. Michael's will look to dominate the boards and disrupt the Pirates' rhythm.
  • Favorite: St. Michael's, -4.5
  • Grine’s Take: Grants has the offensive edge, but the Horsemen’s size and home-court advantage could tilt this in their favor.

West Las Vegas (4-0) at Española Valley (4-1), 7 PM

  • Why Watch: A Northern New Mexico showdown, this game is a measuring stick for both teams. The undefeated 3A No. 6 Dons have dominated early but face their toughest test yet against a balanced Sundevils squad. 4A No. 9 Española’s depth, led by DeVaughn Kensey, Jonathan Gonzales, Ethan Tafoya and CJ Perea, shone last weekend, with all four starters scoring in double figures.
  • Favorite: Española Valley, -2.5
  • Grine’s Take: The Sundevils' ability to control tempo and play in transition will be key. This is a must-watch for fans of competitive 4A/3A basketball.

Santa Fe Prep (2-0) at Socorro (0-1), 7 PM

  • Why Watch: This 3A matchup has postseason implications, with both teams vying for top-8 seeding come March. Santa Fe Prep’s Morgan Field is coming off a dominant 24-point game against Pecos, while Socorro is looking to bounce back after a loss to Magdalena. With coaching instability at Socorro, this is a crucial early test for the Warriors.
  • Favorite: Socorro, -3.5
  • Grine’s Take: The Blue Griffins need another standout performance from Field, but this could be closer than expected if Socorro finds their rhythm.

Last Night Leftovers

Cibola Cougars Shock 4A No. 1 Highland
Cibola (2-0) stunned 4A No. 1 Highland 59-56, delivering one of the season’s biggest surprises. The Cougars, unranked in the 5A NMPreps Power-12, could be on the cusp of a playoff push this season.

Week 3 Daily Dimes – Monday, December 9
Publisher Joshua Grine’s Daily Dimes

Welcome back to Daily Dimes, my daily blog diving into the New Mexico high school basketball scene. Mondays tend to be a little quieter as teams recover from weekend tournaments, but tonight’s slate features a couple of matchups worth keeping an eye on. With a shortage of officials impacting scheduling, these games are rare gems for a Monday night.

5A Cibola Cougars (1-0) at 4A No. 1 Highland Hornets (1-1)

This intriguing Monday night showdown pits two teams with very different trajectories. The 5A Cibola Cougars are looking to shake off the memory of a tough 6-21 campaign last season. They started their 2024-25 season with a win over 2A Menaul, but now they face a true test against the top-ranked team in Class 4A.

The Highland Hornets come into this game after splitting last week’s games against 5A opponents—an impressive 61-58 win over La Cueva and a hard-fought loss to 5A No. 2 Sandia. Highland’s Juan Limas is emerging as a star for the Hornets, scoring 21 points against Sandia and following it up with 19 against La Cueva. Fellow teammate Sebastian Hernandez is also making his presence felt, providing the Hornets with a solid one-two punch.

For Cibola, tonight will serve as a measuring stick for their progress and whether they can compete with one of the best teams in 4A. Highland, on the other hand, will look to continue solidifying their spot at the top of the rankings.

3A No. 4 Robertson Cardinals (1-2) at 4A Valencia Jaguars (3-3)

While this game might not have major resume implications, it’s a great matchup for a Monday night, especially for fans of competitive basktball. Both Robertson and Valencia are looking to bounce back after rough outings in tournament play last week.

Robertson went 1-2 at the Sandia Prep Invitational, dropping games to 4A No. 3 St. Pius X and 4A Belen before finishing strong with a win over Clint, TX. The Cardinals have some standout players to watch, especially George Smith, who is averaging 21.5 points per game and quickly becoming a must-watch talent in Class 3A. Complementing Smith is sophomore Nathan Gonzales, a rising star averaging 16 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks per game.

Valencia, sitting at 3-3 on the season, also went 1-2 at the Santa Fe High Capital City Invite, struggling to find consistency against a tough field. The Jaguars are seeking to establish rhythm and momentum as they enter the heart of their season.

This matchup presents a chance for both teams to rebound and find their footing. With Robertson’s dynamic duo of Smith and Gonzales leading the way, expect the Cardinals to push the pace while Valencia looks to protect home court.
