NO. 18 MANZANO MONARCHS
2018 Season: 14-13 overall, 6-4 district Head Coach: Dominick Romero
Scoop: The Monarchs program has life again after two years under head coach Dominick Romero. Romero took for the program in the summer of 2017 after a 2-23 season; the Monarchs have gone 29-24 with back-to-back winning seasons. The Monarch finished tied for the regular season district championship last season and reached the state tournament after going 14-13 overall.
Ceiling: Bubble Team (13-16). The position might seem high for the Monarchs at 18th on our ranking countdown. The ceiling doesn't seem any better with the best case scenario being a bubble bid and last four in again. They lose all three double-digit scorers and the rest of the district will be improved.
Floor: 20/20 Vision (20-27). Like most teams that will enter the rankings in the 14-19 range it could be a rise or fall type of year (not so much make or break but on the same note). The Monarchs will be in a rebuild with the lone return of Roman Romero (2020) who put in 6.4 points per game.
Quick Prediction: 9 to 11 win range. Romero has been known to build and rebuild everywhere he has been (Cobre, Hot Springs, Socorro, Valencia) and is likely to keep the Monarchs as a dark horse to return to the playoffs. 11 wins could be the high end however and that is more on losing a bulk of the roster and the rest of the district featuring improved teams.
