NO. 19 WEST MESA MUSTANGS
2018 Season: 7-18 overall, 1-7 district Head Coach: Shonn Schroer
Scoop: The Mustangs finished the 2018/2019 season well higher than their projection going into the season. They started the season 6-4 and things appeared to be going as planned. Then June hit and they crumbled to a 1-14 record in the final games of the 2019 portion of the season. They return one of the top players in the classification, a spot up shooter in Eloy Medina (2020), who at 6-3 has some size and range to his game. Nice one-two dribble pull up at times. The bad news: he is 1 of 4 returning players off a team that went 7-18 last season. 19 plays it safe with the Mustangs at this point but then again Schroer has been known to have some solid bounce back years, he definitely can get players fired up.
Ceiling: Bubble Team (13-16). Finishing third in their district could get them in the 15/16 spots of the State Tournament. They finished last in 2019 but hopeful to beat out Piedra Vista (No. 22) and Farmington (23) this coming season.
Floor: Death Roll (20-27). The Mustangs ended up being the horse at the track whom either jumped the gate or experienced an injury, that, if you go to the track, never ends well. Let's hope this years race doesn't end with the same fate as last years. The issue, for the Mustangs, is that I see two or three teams in the 20-27 slots that could easily make a climb into the 13-16 or 17-19 slots.
Quick Prediction: 10-14 Regular Season. This is without breaking down the schedule but I could see them being 3 to 5 wins better this season.
