Here is where the district races stand in 5A after some big games on Monday, with some thoughts on seeding.

Dist. 1: Cleveland (6-2) jumped back on top when Cibola knocked off Rio Rancho (5-2) last week. A lot could happen here because Rio Rancho has a killer final week: at Farmington Tuesday, home for Cleveland Friday, and at Piedra Vista Saturday. Cleveland also plays Volcano Vista (4-4). Cleveland has the tiebreaker over RR at the moment as they beat the Rams 5-4 earlier. PV (3-5), Cibola (3-5) and Farmington (2-5) could all finish anywhere from 4th through 6th in the district and all should make the state tournament.
Dist. 2: La Cueva (6-0) will almost certainly win the district after Eldorado (4-2) swept Sandia (4-2) on Monday. Even though a three-way tie could happen if Sandia were to sweep LC this Saturday, the Bears have a big lead in run differential. Most likely, Eldorado will be second in the district and Sandia third, meaning Sandia is going to fall down to the 6-8 seed range at state. LC has the inside track to the no. 1 seed.
Dist. 3: On Monday, Centennial (11-2) beat Las Cruces (8-5) while Organ Mountain (10-3) beat Mayfield (8-5). This race will go down to the last day, as Centennial and LC play each other twice more on Thursday, and OM and Mayfield do the same. OM remains alive to win the district, but Centennial has the tie-breaker, so OM needs a sweep and two Centennial losses. LC seems safely in the tourney, but if they end up behind Mayfield in the district, LC’s seeding will drop. Mayfield is on the bubble. None of these four teams seem likely to host in the first round, even the district champ.
Dist. 4: Carlsbad (4-0) plays Hobbs (2-2) this week and will win the district by winning one of them. Clovis (1-3) and Roswell (1-3) also have two games with each other, and either could leapfrog Hobbs with a sweep. Hobbs may end up on the wrong side of the state bubble, and Clovis isn’t a lock either.
Dist. 5: Rio Grande (5-1) beat Los Lunas (6-1) last week and will win the district with wins over AHA and West Mesa, as they own the tie-breaker over Los Lunas. The Tigers need a win over Albuquerque High and some help. Los Lunas had been in line to maybe host the first weekend, but they have to be seeded behind the Ravens if RG wins the district, and RG is ranked only no. 15 in MaxPreps at the moment. Los Lunas could be a tough matchup for a top 5A team in the first round.
