New Mexico High School Baseball: One Month In Review

As we delve into the heart of the baseball season, it's time to reflect on the performances of our top high school teams across the state. With five weeks behind us and April beckoning, let's assess where the teams stand as we approach the midpoint of the 2024 season.

No. 1. Rio Rancho High School (Rio Rancho, NM)
The Rams are riding high after clinching victory in their home tournament, the Sal Puentes Tournament, triumphing over Sandia in a nail-biting championship match with a score of 2-1. Their overall season record stands at an impressive 14-3, with notable losses against Sandia (5-3), La Cueva (14-4), and El Paso-Americas High School (Texas).

No. 2. Sandia High School (Albuquerque, NM)
With a commendable 12-3 overall record, the Matadors enter April seeking to rebound from a close loss to Rio Rancho High School (2-1) in the Sal Puentes Tournament final. Additional losses include encounters with La Cueva (13-3) and a split double-header against La Cruces.

No. 3. La Cueva High School (Albuquerque, NM)
The Bears boast a solid 12-2 record, highlighted by a thrilling 10-inning victory over Carlsbad (5-4). While they've suffered defeats against Sandia (8-3) and Hamilton High School from Arizona (17-0), they've also showcased their prowess with a dominant win over Sandia (13-3).

No. 4. Las Cruces High School (Las Cruces, NM)
Sitting at 8-3 overall, the Bulldawgs faced setbacks against Cleveland (11-6) and Sandia in a tight double-header (3-2). Their recent loss to El Paso Leadership Academy East serves as motivation as they prepare for upcoming challenges.

No. 5. Cleveland High School (Rio Rancho, NM)
Despite a strong start (10-1), the Storm faced a tough stretch, dropping consecutive games to La Cueva, Rio Rancho, and Sandia. Currently standing at 12-4, they aim to regain momentum, having avenged an early loss to Hobbs.

No. 6. Volcano Vista High School (Albuquerque, NM)
The Hawks hold a commendable 14-2 record, their only defeats inflicted by Sandia (3-2) and Cleveland (4-3). With their eyes set on further success, they remain a force to be reckoned with.

No. 7. Rio Grande High School (Albuquerque, NM)
After a slow start, the Ravens have found their rhythm, securing five consecutive victories to reach an 8-4 overall record. Though they've faced defeats against tough opponents like La Cueva and St. Pius X, their recent winning streak signals a resurgence.

No. 8. Carlsbad High School (Carlsbad, NM)
The Cavemen, with a 10-6 record, have endured challenges including losses to out-of-state teams Midland Legacy and Pebble Hills, and a mixed performance in the Rio Rancho tournament dropping games to Rio Rancho and La Cueva. However, a nine-game winning streak earlier in the season underscores their potential for success.

No. 9. Centennial High School (Las Cruces, NM)
The Hawks are currently boasting a 7-4 overall record for the season and are entering April riding a 4-game winning streak. Among their four losses this season are defeats against El Paso Leadership Academy East (5-2), Los Lunas (4-1), and a season-opening double-header loss to Carlsbad.

No. 10. Hobbs High School (Hobbs, NM)
The Eagles are holding steady with a 6-7 overall record for the season as we approach April. Among their losses are encounters with Organ Mountain, Belen, and a double-header setback against Centennial last weekend. However, they managed to turn the tables on Organ Mountain with a double-header victory on March 23rd.

No. 11. Organ Mountain High School (Las Cruces, NM)
The Knights maintain an 8-3 overall record as we move into April. Despite a strong 6-0 start to the season, the Knights stumbled with three consecutive losses before rebounding with a double-header triumph over Deming last weekend. However, they faced defeat against Rio Rancho and dropped a double-header to Hobbs on March 23rd.

No. 12 Eldorado High School (Albuquerque, NM)
The Golden Eagles currently hold a 7-4 overall record this season. Despite a solid 5-1 start, they've encountered a rough patch with a 2-3 record over the last two weeks and last five games. Losses have come against Volcano Vista, Rio Rancho, Rio Grande, and Cibola.

As the season progresses, these rankings are sure to shift.
