As mentioned in another thread, 12 of 18 teams will make the 6A playoffs this year (in part because Rio Grande and AHS are independent). What if only eight teams made it? For many years, only eight made the playoffs in the big school division, before a lot of new high schools opened.
The benefit of an eight-team playoff is that it would shorten the playoffs by a week, meaning that you could move the start of the season back a week, or add another bye week during or after the regular season. It would also mean that making the playoffs was more meaningful.
Some quality teams would not make it -- this year, teams like Volcano Vista, Cibola, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Carlsbad and Hobbs would all be on the bubble.
