This statement has just been issued by the APS Board of Education
From KRQE:
Dr. Don Duran, president of the Albuquerque Public School Board of Education, released the following statement on Sunday, Aug. 23:
"The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education had a very frank discussion with Superintendent Luis Valentino this evening.
After a thorough and rigorous discussion of the facts as we know them tonight, we have scheduled a special Board of Education meeting for 7 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27, for further discussion and action.
Let me be clear that this has been a painful experience for the Board, Superintendent Valentino and the community. This board takes our responsibility seriously, as well as our commitment to our constituents.
We know that public trust is an issue for us now, and we will do everything we can to regain the public trust and confidence. We apologize for putting the community through this ordeal.
You can rest assured that tomorrow schools will open, teachers will provide quality instruction to all students, and student safety, security and success will continue to be our focus."
From KRQE:
- It all surrounds the hiring of the now former deputy superintendent who is facing child sex assault charges. A background check was never complete for the deputy superintendent. Current Superindent Luis Valentino claims he was unaware of this, but an HR head says she raised the issues six times in emails.
- Last Friday, it was revealed that Valentino had hired a man charged with six felony counts of sexual assault on a child, stemming from a 2013 Colorado arrest.
