But don't count out the rest of the field—programs like West Las Vegas, Santa Fe Indian, and Tohatchi are eager to make noise and disrupt the bracket. With rising stars, dominant seniors, and plenty of intriguing matchups, the opening round is set to deliver. Here's your full preview and predictions for the first round of the 2024 NMAA Girls State Tournament in Class 3A.
#1 Navajo Prep (22-5, 12-0) vs. #16 St. Michael's (10-18, 3-5), 6 PM
A rematch of last year’s Final Four opens the tournament as top-seeded Navajo Prep aims to defend its title. The Eagles ran through District 1-3A unbeaten and feature Lailah McGary, a First Team All-District pick and Co-Offensive Player of the Year. St. Michael’s, the fourth-place finisher from District 2-3A, is led by senior Elsie Odai (9.1 ppg, 7.7 rpg). Upsetting the champs on their home floor would be one of the biggest shocks of the tournament.Prediction: Navajo Prep 66, St. Michael’s 32
