Monday August 17th
Volcano @ Los Lunas 5PM
Recap: Volcano vista looked good on offense with Quarterback Josh Williams throwing three touchdowns, two went to receiver Allan Rodriguez. Tight end Josh Barton made a nice snag over the middle of the field. Los Lunas defense had trouble defending the pass, but fared better than expected against the run. Los Lunas first offensive possession didn't create a lot of big plays, mainly because Volcano Vista was much bigger up front. Quarterback Anthony Sanchez is an athlete for sure, really, really liked him and they also had a fullback by the name of Dominic Mariano that impressed. Los Lunas Junior Running Back OMaury Samuels did hit a big run for a touchdown from 45 yards out, then limped off the sidelines. He never returned, looked like his hamstring is bothering him. The run was ridiculous as he started up the middle and made a few cuts up the field for a highlight touchdown run.
Players That Stood Out
Josh Williams - QB - Volcano Vista
Allan Rodriguez - WR - Volcano Vista
Josh Barton - TE - Volcano Vista
Brian Parks - LB - Volcano Vista
Nick Mourning - DL - Volcano Vista
Anthony SAnchez- QB - Los Lunas
O'Maury Samuels - RB - Los Lunas
Dominic Mariano - RB - Los Lunas
Tuesday, August 18th
Sandia/West Mesa/Del Norte at Community 4PM
Sandia Matadors
Scrimmage Analysis: They are very big up front and at times had their way with both West Mesa and Sandia creating a few big play opportunities. Running Back Jimmy Gallegos busted out a nice first run from scrimmage and Dominic Baca broke a long touchdown run. I think Sandia could improve in the pass depart on offense, but Jeremy Archibeque did connect on a few passes over 12-yards. On defense Sandia did not allow many big plays that I saw and their linebackers did a good job filling holes and I like their defensive front.
Players That Stood Out
Jimmy Gallegos - Running Back
Dominic Baca - Running Back
Ben Betram - Defensive Line
Jeremiah Loya - Defensive Line
Matthew Holly - Offensive linemen
Isaiah Lowery - Offensive Line
Linebacker (I think it might of been Mark Flores?)
West Mesa Mustangs
Scrimmage Analysis: There has been a lot of talk that this group would be much improved and I believe the hype, but it's not really hype it's a strong foundation that has been built by 4th year Coach Ron McMath. I think they were the second best team there today and I liked that they put the ball in Idan Urrutia's hands at running back, you've got to get your best athlete the football. Marcos Gonzales was a pleasant surprise at quarterback and they had some good linebacker play. I didn't see any deep balls get behind them. Coach McMath mentioned that they are not that deep, but I certainly think they can make a run for the district title and a playoff spot this year.
Players That Stood Out
Marcos Gonzales - Quarterback
Jacob Garduno - Linebacker
Iran Urrutia - Running Back/Defensive Line
Jon Martinez - Defensive Line
Del Norte Knights
Scrimmage Analysis: Watching Coach Binkley coach his kids up is something else, he does it right and his enthusiasm for his kids is really un-matched. Del Norte I think is still the front runner for the district tile and they'll have the most size without question. Today against West Mesa and Sandia they held their own and when they line up 240 pound Avery See at tailback, it's all downhill. They didn't turn the ball over, did not make a ton of mistakes and their offensive line anchored by Gabe DeSoto is not bad. Also liked their tight end Tony Swanson who made some good grabs.
Players That Stood Out
Avery See - Running Back/Linebacker
Gabe DeSoto - Linemen
Tony Swanson - Tight End
Parker Herndon - Running Back
Dante Mora - Quarterback
Tuesday, August 18th
Centennial @ Deming 630PM
Centennial and Deming scrimmaged today in Deming. Junior Quarterback Dante Lopez accounted for 4 touchdowns on the day including a touchdown pass to Bryce Rewalt. Deming was led by quarterback Dante Urrea who scored twice.
Wednesday, August 19th
Highland/Rio Grande/Bernalillo - 4PM Milne
Opening up Wednesday is a trio at Milne between three teams that all have newer coaches in the mix. Highland was winless last year under Stacy Washington, but we have liked their QB/WR duo in Dominic Johnson and Nicholas Horton over the summer. Rio Grande has a new head coach in Sam Mascarenas who the community seems to be excited about and Bernalillo has a new head coach for the second straight year as well in John Cabos.
Wednesday, August 19th
Valley vs. Manzano - 6PM @ Wilson
Very interesting scrimmage taking place Wednesday Night between Valley and Manzano. The Vikings are looking to have a rebound season after going 4-5. We’re excited to see 6-foot-6, 240 pound Defensive Linemen Teton Saltes go against Manzano’s best linemen. We are also excited to see Isaiah Chavez at quarterback for the Vikings who threw for 1,000-yards in 6 games as a sophomore. For the Monarchs, we’ve mentioned how they are young and talented, want to see some of that speed and check out their defense led by linebacker Cameron Herrera and Defensive Back Ryan Moore.
Thursday, August 20th
Hobbs vs. Belen (Is the right day)
Can't seem to get the right day on this one, but whatever the case this yearly scrimmage takes place in Ruidoso and it's somewhat of an odd scrimmage because Hobbs throws and Belen doesn't. The Hobbs Eagles return two-year starter at quarterback Isaac Amaya who has had a strong summer season, eyes are on him, also watch for running back Jeremy Padilla who is their home-run hitter and on defense, we want to see those linebackers Jared Reber and Chris Kuykendall step up. The Belen Eagles graduated a ton, lost over 30 seniors to graduation and all their linemen. What does Coach John Lerma have up his sleeve this year?
Thursday, August 20th
Albuquerque vs. Socorro 53PM Milne
The Albuquerque Bulldogs enter the season with a good amount of momentum after going 4-6 during the 2014 season and it helps when you return 18 starters. Who will be their quarterback? Riley Padilla who threw for 1,438-yards or Narke Vatoseow a transfer from La Cueva that looks like a gamer. On defense, 6-foot-5, 305 pound Raymond Cole who just picked up an offer from Adams State should have a field day against a much smaller Socorro team. The Warriors were winless in 2014 under Queving Redding, how much improvement will we see in year 2?
Thursday, August 20th
Atrisco vs. Cibola 4PM at Community
These two teams have scrimmaged now for the last few years and it's always an even match up. All eyes will be on Atrisco Heritage Quarterback Aaron Bean, who will likely be the faster player on the field Thursday, but who will step up in the backfield for the Jaguars after graduating Ricci Alvidrez? Cibola graduated a ton of talent, but Rod Williams as Head Coach has taken them to the playoffs two-years running. Who is Cibola's new quarterback and what should we expected on defense?
Thursday, August 20th
Moriarty @ St. Mike's 4PM
Always a good scrimmage, but this year's it's in Santa Fe at the home of the Horsemen. Moriarty went 5-5 last year, but returns some solid defensive players including three year starter Allen Michel at backer. The Horsemen will be young this year, but likely a step up from last season. Watch for linebacker Xavier Vigil who could also see reps at running back and new names like Chross Jaramillo and Jake Tetrault are likely to impress. Not sure what either team has in the trenches.
Thursday, August 20th
Hagerman vs. Artesia JV
Hagerman Head Coach Casey Crandall resigned this summer to take over the girls head basketball job in Dexter. Taking over as Head Coach is Andrew Rodriguez. The Bobcats return Isaiah Bejarano and Logan Franklin. No real detail on Artesia's JV, but we hear David Hooten (next qb in line is not playing anymore)
Thursday, August 20th
Goddard vs. Miyamura 4PM
Went to this scrimmage last year and watched Goddard run up and down the field and hit Miyamura hard. Likely the best thing for Miyamura as the Patriots went on to win 10 games in 2014. The Patriots return prized running back AJ Stakovich. The Goddard Rockets will enter year two under Head Coach Mike Whalen and like aways, they have a good skill set of kids with speed and strength. We want to see how sophomore quarterback Cameron Stevenson looks as the new starter and want to see linemen like Tony Salvarrey and Sam Sartain. Also have our eyes on linebacker Ethan Featherstone.
Thursday, August 20th
Tucumcari @ Robertson 5PM
The Rattlers will again have their work cut out for them in 2015 entering the year with just three seniors. Robertson is coming off a one loss season and are just rolling as a program. We want to see Matthew Baca at running back and JR Gonzalez on the outside do work. This will likely be an up-hill battle for the Rattlers.
Thursday, August 20th
Onate @ Artesia 5PM
Two very contrasting offensive styles with Onate running triple option and Artesia bring the air it out. In the past this scrimmage has been pretty even with Onate playing Artesia's pass game well. All eyes will be on Onate's defensive linebacking corps headlines by Forest McKee and Matthew Young, two of the top juniors in New Mexico. For the Bulldogs they return Justing Houghtaling who threw for 3,400-yards as a junior and fans are likely eager to see Jesse Gallegos in the backfield. Bulldog linebackers Jacob Enriquez and Grady Frost are going to get a lot of action.
Thursday, August 20th
Eldorado @ Rio Rancho 630PM
Last year these two heavyweights battled it out at Rio Rancho in a scrimmage that seemed more like a game at times with a ton of intensity. These two would then meet in the semifinals of the 6A playoffs. Lot of changes to both teams due to graduation: Easton Bruere and Zach Gentry are gone: In steps Steven Bailey for Rio Rancho as the new quarterback and for Eldorado, will they really be running the triple option? We're looking for Rio Rancho's defense to again be dangerous and want to see Running Back Josh Foley in action. Eldorado has some gamers in the backfield like Noah Sweitzer, Isaiah Martinez, and Dominic Sandoval.
Thursday, August 20th
La Cueva @ Cleveland 630PM
La Cueva is very young and Cleveland is very experienced. The Bears will likely start 6 sophomores which is going to put you in an up hill climb when taking on the Preseason No 1. Watch for Chris Campbell at quarterback and for Derek Loidolt and Josh Woison at linebacker. The Storm started out the week with 6-foot-7, 265 pound Henry Hattis committing to Stanford and he's not their only next level linemen. They also have Gabe Ortega at quarterback who has an offer from New Mexico, we want to see him in open space. Cleveland's defense should be something else as well.
Thursday, August 20th
Grants vs. Kirtland Central
Regional rivalry scrimmage if there is such a thing. Grants has a few three year starters returning in Brandon Hernandez at quarterback and Brady Hatton their 6-foot-6, 337 pound defensive tackle. Rio Thompson enters his second year coaching the Pirates. Taking over at Kirtland Central as Head Coach is Greg Jenks.
Friday, August 21st
Espanola @ Santa Fe
We have the Demons ranked as the No. 32 team entering the season and really like linebacker Bailey Lozada Cabbage and quarterback Adrian Blea. Two we'll have eyes on Friday. Espanola has a handful of returners entering the season, where will the Sundevils play an athlete like Marcos Flores?
Friday, August 21st
Capital/Escalante/Taos
Capital is one team we are really excited to see this season and are expecting Running Back/Defensive Back Kevin Brown to show out. For Escalante they return super man in Dominic Montano who ran for 2,100-yards last year leading the Lobos to the 2A title. Taos will be led by first year Head Coach Art Abreu Jr. and return linebacker Damian Garcia who recorded 94 tackles in 2014.
Friday, August 21st
West Las Vegas @ Santa Rosa
West Las Vegas will take their air it out attack to Santa Rosa and take on the Single Wing. Watch for Miguel Sena who caught for close to 800-yards. The Lions went 5-7 last year and return Matt Chavez, one of the top linemen in the district.
Friday, August 21st
Las Cruces vs. Clovis in Ruidoso at 4PM
One of the most highly anticipated scrimmages of week is this one between two 6A powers taking place in Ruidoso. Las Cruces is coming off a 6-6 season and ranked No. 4 overall entering the season. Yes Quarterback Kameron Miller returns for his senior season, but who is going to step up around him? On defense can Las Cruces stop Clovis' potent ground game? Is Cory Noel at backer healthy for Las Cruces and watch for Vincent Delgadillo at defensive end. The Wildcats are ranked No. 11 overall in New Mexico and led by two year starter at quarterback Daulton Hatley and running back Micah Gray who ran for over 1,000-yards as a sophomore, oh and they have a tight end named Roland Chavez who holds an offer from New Mexico State. Clovis will have 11 new names on defense.
Friday, August 21st
Mayfield @ EP Coronado 6PM
The No. 2 ranked team the Mayfield Trojans is heading to Texas for week zero to take on El Paso Coronado who finished the year 5-5 in 2014. For the Trojans we're looking to see how new quarterback Joeray Valencia manages the offense and want to see how many touches running back Issac Vance gets for the Trojans, he holds an offer from New Mexico State. The Mayfield Defense should be loaded and we want to gage their talent going into the Hobbs match up.
Friday, August 21st
Gadsden @ Canutillo TX 7PM
The Panthers went 2-8 last year under Joe Vasquez. They also graduate a good amount of talent entering the 2015 season. Going against Canutillo TX a team that went 14-2 and won 4 games in the 5A Texas Playoffs last year should be a great prep for their schedule.
