In district play, the Sundevils continued their winning ways with a 38-25 victory over Taos, and back-to-back 50-0 shutouts against Moriarty and Pojoaque Valley, securing the district championship with a 3-0 record.
The state playoffs saw the Sundevils earn a 7-seed, where they triumphed over 10-seed St. Pius X, 31-7. However, their season ended in the quarterfinals with a loss to eventual state champion and 2-seed Lovington, 52-0. Despite the tough finish, the Sundevils’ 2023 campaign was marked by historic milestones and a strong foundation for future success.

Season Recap: Historic Achievements for the Sundevils
The Espanola Valley Sundevils reached unprecedented heights in 2023, clinching only their second district championship in program history and securing their first state playoff win. The season began with challenging losses to Los Alamos (35-0) and Bernalillo (26-18), followed by a narrow victory over Escalante (21-14). After a tough 48-11 defeat to West Las Vegas, the Sundevils found their stride, embarking on a seven-game winning streak.
