Season Recap: A Season of High Hopes and Hard Lessons
The 2023 season started with high hopes for the Capital Jaguars, buoyed by the momentum of a 5-win season in 2022. They kicked off with a promising 33-17 win over 4A Grants. However, the season quickly took a turn for the worse, ending with a nine-game losing streak and a search for a new head coach.
The Jaguars' early optimism was dashed with a week two loss to 3A St. Michael's (28-20), followed by a narrow 23-20 defeat to 5A Los Alamos. Subsequent losses included a 21-14 setback against 6A Alamogordo, a 20-14 loss to 4A Albuquerque Academy, and a 33-29 loss to 6A Atrisco Heritage, leaving them 1-5 in non-district play.
District play brought more challenges, beginning with a 57-7 defeat to Los Lunas. A close 14-13 loss to Albuquerque on the road was followed by a 34-21 home defeat to Clovis, and a season-ending 28-21 loss to crosstown rival Santa Fe. The Jaguars finished 1-9 overall, missing the playoffs, and leading to the immediate resignation of head coach Joaquin "Wax" Garcia.
