Junior Heavy Onate, looks dangerous
By Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com
Overview
In his first year as Head Coach Brent Jaquess took Onate back to the playoffs finishing the season 7-4 including a playoff win over Manzano. Impressive first year to say the least after the Knights had not been to the playoffs since the 2009 season under former head coach Kelly McKee now the team’s offensive coordinator. Jacquess took over at Onate after being the Defensive Coordinator at Las Cruces for several years and we’ve seen an instant impact on the field with him at the helm. Now will that success continue is the question. The Knights have a very heavy junior class and while they look very dangerous heading into this season, next year could be one of Onate’s best senior classes ever.
“Our football davy and what we are trying to do has really improved. We got into the first game of last year and realized we weren’t near as advanced as we thought we were. Now running our flexblone offense, it’s more cohesive these guys are on the same page and we’re actually executing a lot more of the playbook. Defensively we’ve got two very good defensive ends, we’ve got some good talented linebackers, and I am really excited to see what this year’s defense can do. I think on paper we can be better than last year and that’s exciting,” said second year Head Onate Football Coach Brent Jaquess.
What to Expect
The Knights return quite a few starters from last year, but you’re going to see a ton of juniors step up in key varsity roles this year. As Jacquess said the defense is going to be very good headlined by a defensive front that could be among the best in New Mexico (on paper). Defensvie End Luis Dauarte is has great natural football instincts at 5-foot-11 and 212 pounds, he’s going to get to the quarterback, it’s that simple. James Martin at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds had 10 sacks as a sophomore and looks to have had a tremendous off-season, he’ll also play tight end on offense, very good looking prospect.
Their linebackers corps are anchored by Junior Forest McKee at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, we have him ranked as the top junior in New Mexico. His combine numbers read: 22 reps of 185 pounds, 4.69 40-time, 4.1 shuttle time, and 8-feet-10 inch broad jump. Those are D-1 numbers, especially considering his size. Next to McKee at backer is Matt Young (Son of Fred Young Sr. who played at New Mexico State and Played for the Seattle Seahawks). Young is 6-foot-1, 220 pounds and also had a tremendous combine showing and these don’t just look the part they will each come up and lay the wood. Also keep tabs on Damien Tuton a 6-foot-1, 210 pound junior that can play both end or backer.
In the secondary their top defensive back is Matt’s younger brother Monroe who will just be a sophomore, but from what we heard and saw at the combine he is another top level player. Young ran a 4.5 40-time, 4.25 shuttle, and had a standing broad of 9-feet-1 inches.
On offense the Knights will run the flex bone under Kelly Mckee the team’s offensive coordinator and it looks like Tony Herrera at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds will get the start. Their backfield will consist of speed with guys like Joseph Fielder and Monroe Young seeing action. Fielder comes from a long line of very good and strong high school football players. At the combine he had 16 reps of 185 pounds, ran a 4.59 40-time, 4.28 shuttle, and 8-feet-10 inch broad and like many others from Onate this year, he’s just a junior.
Their fullbacks is where Onate is going to hurt people. Forest McKee at 6-foot-1, 215 pounds along with Matt Young at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds both were getting reps on Thursday and each is going to be a load to take down. At tight end the Knights will reply on James Martin and up front leading the big boys looks to be guys like Gino Martinez at 200 pound, Angel Bannuelos at 275 pounds, Tyler Stockerberger at 288 pounds, and David Hausemann at 324 pounds.

2015 Schedule
“The first part of our schedule is very tough. We open with a Centennial team that might have the best offensive line in the state. We follow that game up with El Paso Eastlake who is a top 10 team in the region, then we’ve got Cleveland the preseason No. 1 in New Mexico 6A, and then we got a good Hobbs team that returns a good amount from last year. I expect West Mesa to be much improved, then we open district with Mayfield, then Gadsden, Deming, and then end with Las Cruces,” said Jacquess on the schedule.

Senior Quote
We caught up with Onate Defensive End Luis Dauarte to get his thoughts on the season. “I absolutely love this coaching staff, they have a philosophy of smash mouth football and I love that style. I love these guys and we follow their lead no questions asked. It’s a huge honor to play here at Onate as many of my uncles played right here. My three uncles all influenced me as a child to come here and to make my family proud continuing the tradition of being an Onate Knight.”
Our Take
Though the Knights play a gauntlet of a front end schedule and play in one of the toughest districts in the State it’s looking like Onate will be better than last year when they won 7-games. Does this mean they are a 8 or 9 game winner? Not sure, but on paper these guys are very good and while they’ll be tough to deal with every week in 2015, their 2016 team could be tops overall in Las Crues which hasn’t happened in quite some time if ever. Their offense running the flex bone relies heavily on having a fullback that is a bruiser, this year Onate has two of them. With the flex bone Onate depends on the defense giving up few points, as mentioned the defense is stacked. Have a strong feeling that game against Centennial week one is going to be a lot closer… Knights look hungry.
