New Mexico High School Football Friday Night Recap

NMPreps recap on Friday night football across New Mexico. #nmpreps.

Volcano Vista 34, Las Cruces 17
Opening up the season at Community Stadium that Volcano Vista Hawks turned the visiting Las Cruces Bulldawgs away. The dude: key player from the game is quarterback Elliott Paskett-Bell who showed off his play making ability. The senior QB had a couple big passes including a 47-yard TD pass. Look ahead: Both teams struggled with penalties, Las Cruces has some dudes, both will be well improved a couple weeks from tonight. Keep an eye: running back David Barela (2023) this season for Las Cruces.

Centennial 38, Cleveland 35
Daniel Hernandez had the best welcome party as the new quarterback for the Centennial Hawks took in the final touchdown with 44.7 seconds left on the clock. The dude: Mikah Gutierrez (2023) at RB for the Hawks had 190 yards rushing. Look ahead: For the first in 22 tries the Storm fall. Cleveland WR Nic Trujillo is a stud but the defense will need to improve, same with the OL. Where do we fall: Centennial will clearly move up in the next ranking and one note is the OL could be the best we've seen at this point.

La Cueva 30, Rio Rancho 7
This was all the Bears from La Cueva from the roster down to the game plan. La Cueva controlled the contest and held the Rams to under 100-yards of total offense on the night. The dude: Aidan Armenta (2023) is solid and proved why he is ranked No. 1 at QB despite a talented group that we've seen this weekend. He finished with over 150-yards passing on the night and three passing touchdowns. Look ahead: La Cueva is the full package. Rio Rancho moved down to the middle tier after this one and could be in for the transition we suggested. Keep an Eye: Well, we all know the name Mason Posa (2025) - from his offer from UNM - but as you can see in some of the clips, the young man is going to be a stud by his senior season.

AROUND THE STATE

On Notice:
Albuquerque High is one of the teams that we predicted would fall on opening night but came out ahead 22-20 on the road at Organ Mountain in Las Cruces. Three big plays from the night -- Jabulani Cooper with a 65-yard touchdown run and Izaiah Bustillos with an 82-yard fumble recovery. The other was an 85-yard kick return by Miguel Adame. All three are seniors.

Flexing: Los Lunas keeps the chile roaster with a 45-0 win over Belen. Lighting extended this one. Big plays from Paul Cieremans, quarterback, who had three touchdowns to get things started. Dominic Trujillo had two interceptions in the first half as well.

5A Powers, Powered Up: Roswell moved along with ease ver Lovington, 69-29. Goddard over Santa Teresa 19-3, and Artesia over Carlsbad 30-27. The story of the Artesia win was a Matthew Saiz retun that would end this one in epic fashion. Nye Estrada got the call as QB-1 for the Bulldogs and had three touchdown passes -- Peyton Greathouse (32-yards) Bradley Valenzula (23-yard) and Juan Diego-Duran (21-yards) on the receiving end. Carlsbad had some dudes though -- Eli Asay had a 55-yard TD run, and 73-yard TD run too Rene Ramos on defense, Dane Naylor moved things at QB and kicked the extra points.

AGAINST THE GRINE

  • Albuquerque High +8.5 against Organ Mountain (AHS wins 22-20). We predicted it to be 23-14 OM.
  • Centennial +15.5 against Cleveland (Centennial wins 38-35) -- we predicted the final would be Cleveland 38-21.
  • Cibola +3.5 against Eldorado. (Cibola won 39-29). Although we had Cibola ranked higher we went with Eldorado. We predicted the final to be 28-23 Eldorado.
  • Santa Rosa +6.5 against Dexter. (Santa Rosa won 40-0). Okay, this was a big one.
  • Volcano Vista +12 against Las Cruces (VV won 34-17). Volcano Vista QB was projected to do well, he did, plus more.
  • Close -- we said Tohatchi 12-6, it ended Tohatchi winning 12-7 pick was right but the line was 6.5.
  • In lines we went 16-6 (not great, so improvement is need). Picks we went 17-5.
