NMPreps Week 2 Rankings: Notable Movements and Shakeups
As the second week of New Mexico high school football approaches, the NMPreps rankings have seen significant movement. Teams across various classes have shifted positions, reflecting the outcomes of last week's games and setting the stage for an exciting season.Top of the Rankings: La Cueva and Las Cruces Hold Firm
At the top of the rankings, La Cueva and Las Cruces remain firmly entrenched in the #1 and #2 spots, respectively. La Cueva's dominant 21-0 victory over Volcano Vista, a strong 6A contender, solidified their position. Las Cruces also impressed with a commanding 50-7 win over Mayfield in the storied rivalry, showcasing their firepower on both sides of the ball.Centennial Rises, Cleveland Falls
One of the most notable changes is Centennial’s rise from #4 to #3. Centennial's thrilling 35-28 victory over Cleveland in a high-scoring affair demonstrated their resilience and ability to compete with top-tier teams. As a result, Cleveland drops from #3 to #4, a rare setback for the Storm, who are typically a fixture in the top three.West Mesa and Piedra Vista Surge
West Mesa made a significant leap, moving up from #13 to #9 after a solid 48-29 win over St. Pius X. The Mustangs' offense was firing on all cylinders, propelling them into the top ten. Similarly, Piedra Vista moved from #16 to #10, following a 28-7 victory over Sandia, who now drops to #11. The Panthers' defense was particularly impressive, holding Sandia to just one touchdown.Farmington, Deming, and Lovington Climb
Farmington's 47-8 rout of Clovis resulted in a substantial rise, with the Scorpions moving from #17 to #14. Deming also made a notable jump, climbing from #20 to #15 after a hard-fought 35-21 win over Alamogordo. Meanwhile, Lovington's dramatic 31-22 victory over Hobbs in the Lea County Clash catapulted them from #23 to #16, marking a major shift in their early-season momentum.Hobbs and Clovis Drop
On the flip side, Hobbs experienced a significant drop, falling from #7 to #17 after their loss to Lovington. The Eagles struggled to contain Lovington's offense, resulting in their tumble down the rankings. Clovis also saw a sharp decline, moving from #14 to #18 after their defeat at the hands of Farmington.Santa Teresa's Big Leap
Further down the rankings, Santa Teresa made the most substantial leap, moving from #58 to #40 following their 15-14 upset victory over Silver. The victory was a huge morale booster for the Desert Warriors, who overcame a tough Silver team to start their season on a high note.Silver and Valley Drop
Conversely, Silver's narrow loss to Santa Teresa caused them to drop from #30 to #41. Valley also took a tumble, falling from #24 to #30 after a 46-6 defeat to Bernalillo. Both teams will need to regroup quickly to avoid further slides.New Entrants and Noteworthy Moves
Santa Fe Indian and Hot Springs are two teams to watch after significant victories. Santa Fe Indian moved up from #83 to #78 following a 20-18 win over Cuba, while Hot Springs jumped from #82 to #67 after edging out Tularosa 20-18.The movement in this week's rankings highlights the unpredictability of New Mexico high school football. With each game impacting the standings, teams across the state are vying to solidify their positions as we progress through the season. Week 2 promises more action, surprises, and potential shakeups in the NMPreps rankings.
