Week 5 of the New Mexico High School Football Season features several NMPreps.com Top 25 Games. Today we take an early look at the marquee match ups. Our full week 5 preview will be published on Friday.
No. 1 Cleveland @ No. 12 Sandia - Thursday
The Storm now 4-0 on the season will head to Wilson Stadium to take on Sandia 3-1 in a marquee Metro Showdown. The Matadors have won their last two out of three games against Cleveland and have outscored their last three opponents 153-34.
No. 4 Las Cruces vs. No. 3 Centennial - Friday
Last year the game was epic to put it simply with Centennial winning 49-47. This year the new rivalry game is supercharged with both teams entering Friday Night’s match up a combined 7-1. Las Cruces is coming off a 34-31 victory over Rio Rancho, Centennial is on fire beating up Gadsden, Del Norte, and EP Socorro by a combined 106-20.
No. 5 Artesia @ No. 25 Carlsbad
Artesia is 4-0, Carlsbad is 0-4 the rivalry is still one of the biggest in New Mexico. It’s the Battle of Eddy County at Ralph Bowyer and Coach Cooper Henderson of Artesia vs. 1st Year Carlsbad Coach Gary Bradley presents an interesting storyline. Throw the records and everything you know out the window for this game.
No. 6 Eldorado @ No. 7 Mayfield - Saturday
The Eagles now 4-0 on the season after an impressive win over Volcano Vista 38-21 will head to Mayfield now 3-1 for a Saturday Top 25 showdown. The Trojans are coming off a 46-28 loss to Alamogordo. Last year the score of this game was 50-49 with Eldorado winning in overtime.
No. 10 Clovis @ No. 9 Rio Rancho
Each team is looking for a bounce back week after Clovis lost to Cleveland 50-20 and Rio Rancho lost on the road at Las Cruces 34-31. The two teams are 5-5 since the 2003 season, however Rio Rancho has won the last 5 in a row against Clovis. The last time these two met in Rio Rancho it was a shootout with Rio Rancho winning 62-59 in overtime.
No. 11 Hobbs @ No. 17 Goddard
The Goddard Football Rockets now 2-2 have outscored their last two opponents 89-7 in their last two games after starting out 0-2 under second year Head Coach Mike Whalen. Hobbs has also won two in a row, last weekend the Eagles defeated Onate 41-21, led by Quarterback Isaac Amaya’s 6 touchdown passes. The last time Hobbs beat Goddard was way back in 2007 winning 21-20 under Head Coach Phillip Roybal.
No. 14 Manzano vs. No. 13 Cibola
The Manzano Monarchs had to reel off a late season drive against West Mesa last weekend 21-13 to move to 2-2 on the season. The Monarchs who have won two in a row will take on Cibola who is quite the surprise this year at 3-1. The Cougars defeated La Cueva last weekend 27-14 led by Kayzan Martin who had 140-yards rushing.
No. 22 Valley vs. No. 18 La Cueva
Who wants to stay in the Top 25 more? Valley now a surprising 0-4 to start the year is needless to say desperate for a win. La Cueva has lost three in a row. If either team wants to to stick around in the playoff talk, win Friday Night.
