The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Grants Pirates are coming off one of their best seasons in recent history at (19-11, 4-4) and reaching the Final Four.

Overview: The highest ranking, especially preseason ranking, in our history the Pirates of Grants, New Mexico come into the season ranked 10th in the state (No. 1 NMPreps.com 5A Rankings). Head coach Joseph Sanchez has quickly put the Pirates on the 5A map in a short two seasons reaching the Elite Eight in his first season and then the Final Four last season. The Pirates return a talented roster led by 6'5", Richie Lucero who led the team in scoring at 17 ppg and rebounds at 7.9.

Last Season
Record: 19-11, 4-4
Home Record: 6-3
Away Record: 7-6
Neutral Record: 6-2
Post Season: Final Four; Lost to Gallup (70-36)
Points per game: 62.9 (1888)
Points against: 56.3 (1689)

Realistic Prediction: The Pirates have a huge target on their back as one of the top teams returning in 2015-2016. The Pirates are deep this season and their roster only gets stronger with the addition of Mike Chambers, who helped the Magdalena Steers to a 2A state championship last season. This is a dangerous and talented team, we see them as a 20-win team, but they will play a tough schedule featuring the Maxpreps Holliday Classic in California. We have them as a State Title Game team on our poll as well.

Chances
District Champ: 100%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 99%
Final Four: 98%
Title Game: 92%

Returning Players: We have hit on Lucero and Chambers but the roster is loaded (did we mention that) with the likes of 6'6, 320 pound center in Bradley Hatten. Also, the Pirates have junior Matt Vail, a smooth shooter that penetrates well for the Pirates and helped them upset the 3-seed Roswell Coyotes last season.
