This is one program that you will never be able to count out and they have one, if not the most underrated head coaches in 5A basketball. The Desert Warriors were 11-17, 5-5 last season.
Overview: Head coach Robert Haack has been around and knows what it takes and no matter the opponent the Desert Warriors are not a program that you could take lightly. This team will have plenty of new faces taking leadership roles graduating 8-players from last season. They do have some height in returners Laurence Leyva (6'2''/2016), Marcos Baltazar (6'1"/2017) and Michael Graber (6'2"/2017). The team will be in the middle of the pack district 3-5A but could be vying for 2nd place spot.
Last Season
Record: 11-17, 5-5
Home Record: 4-7
Away Record: 3-8
Post Season: Missed the 5A playoffs
Points per game: 42.3 (1185)
Points against: 45 (1261)
Realistic Prediction: The Desert Warriors could finish anywhere from 2nd-5th in this District. Right now we see a few teams above them this preseason as other teams like Belen, Los Lunas and Centennial are favorites to win it and we feel they are above Valencia and Chaparral right now. I think the roster will need to find some depth if they want to compete and they will have to find wins during their non-district schedule. This will be hard to find to find wins on the road.
District Champ: 21.7%: I like Haack so you just never know and that is why I'll give him a higher % than others this high up.
Playoff Team: No but it's close 49.4%
Elite Eight: 12% Yes
Final Four: 2% Yes
Title Game: 1%
Returning Players: Not much returning for the Desert Warriors this season and much of those involved with the program for the 2012 title are gone. They graduate 8-players and return three with experience. It is kind of an unknown bag of tricks right now and we will wait to see who takes the reigns for the Warriors.
Laurence Leyva (6-2/2016)
Marcos Baltazar (6-1/2017)
Michael Graber (6-2/2017)
