RIO RANCHO, N.M. —Rio Rancho Public School officials say they have drug-tested their first group of athletes.

The random drug tests are a first for Rio Rancho Public Schools, after officials adopted the policy in July. Even though fall sports began Aug. 3, the district still had to collect athletes' consent forms. The district did its first round of tests just before the first football game. At last check, the district had not yet received the results.

Bruce Carver, the RRPS athletic director, told Action 7 News the testing costs about $46 per student. He estimates it will cost taxpayers about $25,000 a year.

"We hope this acts as a deterrent," he said. "Coaches are talking it up."

If a player tests positive, he or she would be suspended for 20 activity days for the first offense. If he or she tests positive for drugs a second time, the athlete would have to sit out 45 activity days.
