The CORE (The Center Of Recreational Excellence) in Hobbs is now under construction and two videos are available. Please go to hobbsnm.org to view. This amazing facility will be one of the finest indoor public recreation complexes in the entire nation. It is the result of an unheard public and private funding alliance of six entities. They are the City of Hobbs, the Maddox Foundation, New Mexico Junior College, Hobbs Schools, Lea County and the University of the Southwest. Again, special thanks to Maddox for donating $25 Million as their part of this development. This facility will be along side of the $9 Million jogging/health trail which Maddox also provided most of the funds for. That lighted trail has thousands of trees and bushes and many miles of lush lawn. The Core is located just before the Zia Park Hotel, Casino & Racetrack and across the street from the Lea County Event Center which is attached to NMJC.
Some of the major attractions of The CORE include multiple aquatic facilities. There is a spectacular NCAA rated competition swimming/diving pool where events can be watched from multiple levels. NMJC and USW are expected to create swimming and diving teams and HHS will also use this facility. There will also be other pools with one having several gigantic water slides. One will be the highest water slide in NM. There will also be an indoor soccer center which all schools will be able to use. These are just a few of many recreational facilities that will be inside this enormous facility. If you watch the video, there will be a short pause in between the two presentations. The facility will require about two years to build and is the largest current public works project in NM and the largest within a 500 mile radius of Hobbs. Special thanks to all that worked so hard getting this to come to pass. I am sure that getting cooperation and consensus from so many alpha type personalities heading all of these entities was not easy.
