as of August 21st, 2016
No. 50 Melrose vs Gateway Christian
Repeat of the 2015 State Championship game is here, one Melrose won 30-28. This game became an early upset selection on paper as the defending state champion Melrose Buffaloes lost one of the top players in the state of New Mexico in Cade Banard who has transferred to Texas. Gateway Christian has some people thinking upset, this is the chance to make a leap in 8-Man football.
Line: Melrose -13
Early Prediction: Gateway 27, Melrose 20
No. 49 Escalante vs Tucumcari
The defending 2A state champions have plenty to replace and will have new names ready for the limelight as they graduated all-state Dominic Montano (2,255 rushing yards). Waylon Hinds and Diego Aguilar peak our interest to keep the Lobos near the top. Tucumcari have to replace studs of their own and could find some difficulties on the red turf.
Line: Escalante -18
Early Prediction: Escalante 23, Tucumcari 6
No. 48 Texico at No. 34 Portales
The cross classification battle between regional teams. The Portales Rams are the favorites in this contest as they feature next level talent Jeremy Karngbaye on the defensive side of the ball along with Emilo Lovato making a top defense in 4A football. Texico returns 9-seniors from the 4-8 team from last season.
Line: Portales -7
Early Prediction: Portales 27, Texico 13
No. 47 Eunice vs Hobbs JV
Eunice went 8-4 last season but found some troubles in the opening game with the Hobbs junior varsity falling 55-0. This one could be a replay as the Cardinals (Eunice) have to replace most of their offensive weapons from last season. Junior Tori York is a newcomer that is likely getting the call to carry Eunice this season.
Line: Hobbs JV -20
Early Prediction: Hobbs JV 33, Eunice 10
No. 46 Espanola Valley vs Show Low, Arizona
Like many on this list the Sundevils have to replace some prospects and start a new era with a new head coach. The Sundevils had a magical season going 9-2 but this could be a night that resembles the Sundevils of old as Show Low, Arizona brings a tough program to the state.
Line: Show Low (AZ) -20
Prediction: Show Low, AZ 30, Espanola Valley 3
No. 45 Lovington vs Denver City, Texas
The Anthony Gonzales era will official start on Friday night as the 45th ranked Wildcats look to restore the program to the top. We will likely see new names filling new roles this season but the only way to go is up after a 1-9 season in 2015. Denver City, Texas returns off a 6-6 season.
Line: Denver City, Texas -10
Prediction: Denver City, Texas 21, Lovington 14
No. 44 Ruidoso vs No. 25 Roswell
Both teams will be solid and playing late into the playoffs for both of their classifications . All eyes are on Luis Mendoza to carry the ball for the Coyotes (Roswell) this season along with a new quarterback that could be an x-factor for the Coyotes. Ruidoso has Kyle Woodul back fro his season season after nearly passing for 2,000-yards. They also return Cisco Mayville who ran for 1,317-yards last season providing punch to a stout offense.
Line: Roswell -3
Early Prediction: Roswell 24, Ruidoso 18
No. 43 Bloomfield at No. 23 Belen
Both teams are in a transition here as Bloomfield returns off a 9-2 season last season but have since moved to 5A from 4A football. Brenden Charley is a quarterback to watch and has the chance to place himself in the headlines with a contest against a top 5A program. Belen and the Greg Henington era is here with plenty of excitement and high expectations. The junior class led by Thomas Wisneski (QB), Diego Casillas (FB) and Timothy Bunker (RB) have many liking the Eagles in 2016.
Line: Belen -6
Early Prediction: Belen 27, Bloomfield 18
No. 42 Miyamura at Grants
Both teams could use any win that they can come by and this one neither team can afford to lose, even in week one. Miyamura ranked in the Top-50 off a 3-7 season but has the returning prospects we like. Matt Chavez is the prospect the Patriots of Miyamura have that we like to lead them back to a .500 team. Grants returns from a 4-6 season in 2015.
Line: Miaymura -10
Early Prediction: Miyamura 27, Grants 6
No. 41 Valencia vs No. 14 Alamogordo
A radar game in 5A football as the Valencia Jaguars enter year two of HC Collin Justiss era. Prospect Zach Lowe along with Gabriel Kline for Valencia are two we will keep a close eye on in this contest. Alamogordo brings an early 5A favorite to win the title to the County with next level quarterback Kyle Hooper. It is the battle of ground and pound Jaguars vs the air it out Alamogordo Tigers.
Line: Alamogordo -16
Early Prediction: Alamogordo 33, Valencia 12
No. 40 Aztec vs No. 19 Los Lunas
Providing another 5A intriguing match on Friday night as the highly anticipated senior season of Michigan commit O'Maury Samuels, the running back for the Los Lunas Tigers. The Tigers bring plenty of talent as New Mexico State commit Trevor Brohard will be catching balls from x-factor in the game Hunter Wisneski at QB. Don't shy away fast from an upset here as Cody Smith returns for his junior season at QB for the Aztec Tigers after passing for 2,841-yards. On the road this could be one to keep an eye on as the updates come through, it won't be the run-a-way that you would think.
Line: Los Lunas -11
Prediction: Los Lunas 34, Aztec 31
No. 39 Lordsburg at Willcox, Arizona
The Lordsburg Mavericks have been anticipating this season for 3 years now as the talented 2018 class is officially seniors. Johnny Plowman, QB/LB, Jacob Esquivel, WR/LB and Raymond Saucedo, RB/LB are studs in several sports and will lead the charge on opening night for the Mavericks. The Mavericks averaged near 40 points per game, Wilcox (Arizona) on the other had has struggled going 2-8 last season averaging just over 6 points per game.
Line: Lordsburg -21
Early Prediction: Lordsburg 41, Willcox (AZ) 10
No. 38 Silver at Round Valley, Arizona
Another New Mexico vs Arizona match up as the Silver Colts enter a new era of their own under Raul Diaz who takes over for Butch Branson. The Colts went 4-7 last season and looking to improve that mark with under the radar prospects. The Colts have their hands full with a Round Valley team that went 10-3 last season. The Colts struggled on defense last season giving up 24 points per game while Round Valley exploded for 33 points per contest and return a stud in Kyron Woolf who passed for 2,134 yards along with running for 1,736.
Line: Round Valley -20
Early Prediction: Round Valley (AZ) 37, Silver 12
No. 37 Del Norte vs No. 28 West Mesa
The battle of two teams that are looking to make believers after both went under .500 at 4-6. Most believe both teams could be in the hunt for a playoff spot and district championship in their respected districts. Senior running back Avery See returns off injury with high expectations as a next level prospect for the Del Norte Knight. Domonic Fischer, ATH, Dario Cotto, RB and Gabe Trujillo DB create some depth on star power for the Mustangs. The Mustangs will need to do a better job stopping the run game.
Line: West Mesa -2
Prediction: Del Norte 18, West Mesa 14
No. 36 St. Michael's vs Santa Fe
Two football programs in Santa Fe, two different story lines in it's history. St. Mikes has owned the game recently and will be the favorite as the Demons are coming off an 0-10 season. The Demons struggled putting points on the board last season averaging a touchdown minus the extra point per game. St. Mike's held the Demons scoreless last season but the Demons bring back some experience and expectations are higher with some prospects.
Line: St. Mikes -9
Prediction: St. Mike's 18, Santa Fe 12
No. 35 Robertson vs No. 32 Estancia
There should be plenty of excitement and no seats available for this contest with a clash of two teams that will play late into November. Robertson comes in ranked 35th after a 10-3 season falling in the 4A state championship. Estancia is coming into the game on a 17-game win streak, going 13-0 and being the back-to-back 3A state champions. Estancia held teams to 8-points last season but will need to stop an offensive team in Robertson who averaged 31 points per contest. Quarterback Arjay Ortiz leads the charge for the Cardinals of Robertson while it will be Ezekiel Tapia RB getting the ball in the backfield for the Bears of Estancia in a battle between a top option QB and the speedster running back.
Line: Estancia -1
Early Prediction: Robertson 31, Estancia 27
No. 34 Portales vs No. 48 Texico
No. 33 Albuquerque vs No. 9 Centennial
Albuquerque High enters the Timothy Johnson era, Centennial enters 6A football from 5A. The Bulldogs improved greatly from being one of the worst football programs in New Mexico to a respectable level of winning games. Centennial comes in only a few years young and have already played for a state championship. Dante Lopez (QB) and Jr Pena (WR) are two high profile names that should make an immediate impact in 6A football for Centennial. Albuquerque High will be searching for an identity in 2016 with the lose of their HC late into July along with graduation of quality prospects.
Line: Centennial -33
Prediction: Centennial 42, Albuquerque 6
No. 32 Estancia vs No. 35 Robertson
No. 31 Hatch Valley vs Taos
The defending 4A state champion Hatch Valley Bears enter the season on their 13-game win streak going 13-0 in 2016. Hatch enters at home a place that they have lost a game in 12 straight home games. This one could become the Cade Hackney show as the Hatch WR is a prospect to see. Taos is coming off a 5-6 season with a playoff appearance but this could be a season with a dip as they graduated some key players.
Line: Hatch -30
Early Prediction: Hatch Valley 41, Taos 12
No. 30 Valley vs No. 12 Volcano Vista
The Valley Vikings welcome a new era of football under head coach Judge Chavez. Volcano Vista in the Top-25 at 12th with one of the more athletic teams in the state. At 12th the Hawks could be one of the most underrated teams in 6A football with the likes of David Cormier at WR who is a D-1 level player along with Joren Dickey at WR and top newcomer QB in Dillon Gassoway while not forgetting Top-10 running back Chris Streetz. Valley brings back a top quarterback of their own in Isaiah Chavez who had a stellar season in 2015 along with running back running back Segun Oyeku getting the carries for a Valley team that could be seen running the ball more in 2016.
Line: Volcano Vista -7
Prediction: Volcano Vista 24, Valley 14
No. 29 Atrisco Heritage Academy vs No. 11 Manzano
Two teams that will need every win in order to get an at-large bid to the state tournament including the first week of football. The 29th ranked Jaguars have pieces to replace off their 5-6 team from 2015 from a new quarterback, running back and receivers creating question marks on the offensive side that could play into the outcome for them in week one and foreshadow the season. Rebuild. The Monarchs who reached the quarterfinals last season, going 7-5 overall, will have to replace their leading QB who also led the team in rushing yards. However, the vacancy is unlike the Jaguars vacancy as they have several college prospects on the roster including a junior in Jordan Byrd who has a D-1 offer. Byrd is also an early candidate on the Mr. Football watch list.
Line: Manzano -13
Early Prediction: Manzano 33, Atrisco Heritage Academy 10
No. 28 West Mesa vs No. 37 Del Norte
Prediction: Del Norte 18, West Mesa 14 *Cross Classification Upset Alert
No. 27 Capital vs No. 20 Goddard
Two programs who just three years ago would have been over by halftime with the New Mexico 50-point mercy rule. Fast forward to the 2015 state tournament and it was a 1-point win by Goddard who used to be 1 or 2 in 5A football (old 4A). Capital ranked 27th, their highest preseason ranking in NMPreps history, has some reason for a week one upset in this contest with a transfer and stud returning running back in Junior Vargas. Goddard looks to restore the tradition in this one behind a pair of athletes in RB Devon Quiroz and QB Cameron Stevenson. I would image another close one that comes to the fourth quarter but this one should well attend as this could be one of the biggest football games at Capital High School.
Line: Goddard -5
Prediction: Goddard 24, Capital 21
No. 26 Moriarty vs Bernalillo
Both teams have to be extremely happy with the realignment as they moved from 5A to 4A football. The storylines differ however as the Pintos are coming off a semi-final showing while the Spartans, for the most part, have been surviving as a football program going 0-10 last season. All eyes are on the Pintos in this contest to run the ball to an easy opening game behind the legs of Elijah Tapia who will only improve his numbers in 2016 as RB-1.
Line: Moriarty -27
Prediction: Moriarty 42, Bernalillo 6
No. 25 Roswell vs No. 44 Ruidoso
No. 24 Deming vs Gadsden
Two programs that get lost in the shuffle of playing in one of the most difficult regions for their classification. Deming, even at 24, is too high for most people as they have to replace their do everything athlete from 2015 in Dante Urrea. Fresh on the mind for the Gadsden Panthers is a 52-7 loss in the season finale from 2015. Where to turn for the Wildcats (Deming) is a question mark on offense and could be the storyline for a few weeks - question mark. Gadsden returns off a 1-9 season but hope to see their young 2018 class grow up quick into a 3/4 team in 2016.
Line: Deming -4
Prediction: Gadsden 7, Deming 6 *Non-Top 25 Upset Alert
No. 23 Belen vs No. 43 Bloomfield
No. 22 Farmington vs No. 16 Piedra Vista
No longer district foes the crosstown rivals will square off in opening week in a season that they both hope to make an early statement. The Scorpions have some weapons in the backfield with a stud quarterback in Kody Becenti along with running back Axel Fowler. Piedra Vista has the D-1 lineman in Dylan Weaver but the player that could get the spotlight is athletic quarterback Elijah Gamboa. This one comes down to a touchdown and will be who has the ball on the last possession.
Line: Piedra Vista -3
Prediction: Piedra Vista 34, Farmington 30
No. 21 St. Pius X vs Highland
This one is somewhat of a diamond in the rough of looking for a good game to see during week one. The Sartans bring a wealth of talent with a Linebacker core (Shultz, Deleon, Vigil) that could argue of being in the Top-5 along with a college level quarterback in Drew Ortiz, ready to make people think about Sartan football again. Highland, on the other end, is ready to make a jump from the cellar into the middle tier of the football scene in 6A. Player to watch for the Hornets is Daniel Horton, ATH, one of the quickest players that you will see this season. A playmaker in his own.
Line: St. Pius X -15
Prediction: St. Pius X 27, Highland 10
No. 20 Goddard at No. 27 Capital
Two programs who just three years ago would have been over by halftime with the New Mexico 50-point mercy rule. Fast forward to the 2015 state tournament and it was a 1-point win by Goddard who used to be 1 or 2 in 5A football (old 4A). No. 19 Los Lunas at No. 40 Aztec
Line: Los Lunas -11
Prediction: Los Lunas 34, Aztec 31
No. 18 Piedra Vista at No. 22 Farmington
No. 17 Cibola vs No. 13 La Cueva
Hype vs recent success. The La Cueva Bears football program was once the talk of the Albuquerque Metro area. That has since passed but the Bears who have a new offense, a solid quarterback prospect we like in Chris Campbell have reason to live this hype into a statement opportunity on opening night. The Cibola Cougars have played against the wall for two years now and head coach Rod Williams has blown right through that wall proving doubters wrong. The Cougars have a returning QB (Gannon Chavez), RB Kazyan Martin and program on the rise that makes you wonder how they fell to 17th to start the season. Either way this one won't disappoint you on opening night this Wednesday.
Line: La Cueva -1
Prediction: Cibola 34, La Cueva 27 *Upset Alert
No. 16 Carlsbad vs No. 7 Artesia
Closing time will come a little early on Friday night as the bragging rights of Eddy County is on tap for an exciting opening weekend of football. The Cavemen enter the season ranked 16th after a 1-9 season. The men in Orange opening the season winning their second State Title in a row and 29th overall. However, there is a new head coach making the calls in the City of Champions now and it could make for an interest contest - even though we all know that would happen anyway with this rivalry. Ethan Duff, WR, for Artesia along with new QB-1 in Taylor Null has the Bulldog faithful at ease. One player that we are excited to follow this season is running back Jaykan Willis for the Carlsbad Cavemen a 5-11, junior prospect.
Line: Artesia -1
Prediction: Artesia 22, Carlsbad 20
No. 15 Sandia vs Rio Grande
Sandia is part of a trio ranked outside of the Top-10 (Volcano and Cibola) who I could see playing a pair of playoff games. This preview will be relatively short as Sandia was nothing but impressive this summer at the MPL. Quarterback Jacob Archibeque will be the captain taking the surrounding talent of Jacob Barnhill (TE/DE), Ben Bertam (DE) and Devin Woolsey (WR/S) late into the playoffs. Rio Grande needs to stay healthy and eyes on the future of this program.
Line: Sandia -50
Prediction: Sandia 50, Rio Grande 0
No. 14 Alamogordo vs No. 41 Valencia

Byrd is also an early candidate on the Mr. Football watch list.
Line: Manzano -13
Early Prediction: Manzano 33, Atrisco Heritage Academy 10
No. 10 Hobbs vs No. 8 Clovis
Add another former district rival, crosstown rival or just rival to the list of week one games. The Hobbs Eagles air attack against the team with two of the best running backs in the state led by Mr. Football candidate Micah Gray. Hobbs brings their own excitement in receivers Aaron Compton and Cason Clay. Clovis took the game last season 38-20 and will once again be the favorite as the Eagles have some on the job training for a new varsity quarterback. X-factor is a very talented defensive line for the Wildcats that could rattle the new guy throwing the ball.
Line: Clovis -7
Prediction: Clovis 30, Hobbs 28
No. 9 Centennial vs No. 33 Albuquerque
Albuquerque High enters the Timothy Johnson era, Centennial enters 6A football from 5A. The Bulldogs improved greatly from being one of the worst football programs in New Mexico to a respectable level of winning games. Centennial comes in only a few years young and have already played for a state championship. One player that we are excited to follow this season is running back Jaykan Willis for the Carlsbad Cavemen a 5-11, junior prospect.
Line: Artesia -1
Prediction: Artesia 22, Carlsbad 20
No. 6 Las Cruces vs No. 4 Eldorado
Respect or Disrespect. Many feel maybe we gave the Eagles of Eldorado too much love for making the state championship last season. Many think Las Cruces should always be ranked in the Top-3. One thing I know is the Eagles return some talent in a poised quarterback in Matt Denis, a D-1 type prospect in Bryce Wade and the reincarnation of the Fridge in Elias Baker who is hands down one of my favorite players in the state. However, I can't forget about football town itself and the Las Cruces Bulldawgs who have been Bulldawgs since the day they put their eyes on a football. Brandon Baeza (WR) and Payton Ball (QB) create an exciting 1-2 punch as they enter new era of Bulldawg football. Let us not forget the big man Tristan Olson a Top-10 prospect leading the way for a talented OL.
Line: Eldorado -1
Prediction: Eldorado 21, Las Cruces 20
No. 5 Onate vs No. 3 Cleveland
The defending champions will immediately have to defend their title with a worthy 2016 opponent. The Onate Knights have plenty of reason to have excitement this season with one of the best overall players in linebacker Forest McKee a D-1 prospect that leads a high profile defense that could look to rattle a new quarterback for the Storm. However, let's not forget how good this newcomer is, we ranked him number one (in NM) this summer for quarterbacks that we seen. Angelo Trujillo, the junior quarterback, with huge shoes to fill will have a plethora of talent to help him adjust however in the likes of Adam Cook and Shawn Nieto to name only a few.
Line: Cleveland -8
Prediction: Cleveland 37, Onate 30
No. 4 Eldorado vs No. 6 Las Cruces
Respect or Disrespect. Many feel maybe we gave the Eagles of Eldorado too much love for making the state championship last season. Many think Las Cruces should always be ranked in the Top-3. No. 3 Cleveland vs No. 5 Onate
No. 2 Rio Rancho at No. 1 Mayfield
We've mentioned several (read above) reasons why you have to love the opening weekend of the football season. Now for the cherry on top of this football junkie sundae that you add fudge and maybe a little whipped cream. The number one ranked Mayfield Trojans hosting the second ranked Rio Rancho Rams at the Field of Dreams. Mayfield led by a pair of division one players in stud running back Isaac Vance (signed with Kent State) and NMPreps.com Elite Combine MVP and New Mexico State commit Gavin Swinson, WR. Rio Rancho has plenty of hype of their own in new quarterback Nic Little who will be a new name that you won't forget. However, the prospect you want to see who could be in a battle for best overall running back with Vance is Josh Foley for the Rio Rancho Rams. Foley, a next level player is one to watch and has a D-1 prospect in Logan Hertz leading the charge for the River Ranch down 1-25 to Las Cruces.
Line: Mayfield -1
Prediction: Mayfield 42, Rio Rancho 41

Prediction: Denver City, Texas 21, Lovington 14
No. 44 Ruidoso vs No. 25 Roswell

48 Texico
The cross classification battle between regional teams. The Portales Rams are the favorites in this contest as they feature next level talent Jeremy Karngbaye on the defensive side of the ball along with Emilo Lovato making a top defense in 4A football. Line: Portales -7
Early Prediction: Portales 27, Texico 13
Line: Estancia -1
Early Prediction: Robertson 31, Estancia 27
The battle of two teams that are looking to make believers after both went under .500 at 4-6. Most believe both teams could be in the hunt for a playoff spot and district championship in their respected districts. Senior running back Avery See returns off injury with high expectations as a next level prospect for the Del Norte Knight. Line: West Mesa -2
44 Ruidoso
The Scorpions have some weapons in the backfield with a stud quarterback in Kody Becenti along with running back Axel Fowler. Piedra Vista has the D-1 lineman in Dylan Weaver but the player that could get the spotlight is athletic quarterback Elijah Gamboa.
41 Valencia
