Week 1: What to Watch Thursday Through Saturday

The 2015-2016 basketball season is underway we take a look at the Tuesday and Wednesday night slate of games across the state of New Mexico.

THE BIG THREE

"The Big Three" is the three games you should watch or the best three games taking place.

My Top Pick Game: Fan Base Clash
No. 22 Espanola Valley (0-0) vs. Gallup (0-0), Thursday:
The last time these two met on an opening night it was as the number one team and number two team in their classification (4A at the time). The Sundevils will be a new look with a younger backcourt with the Bengals having a new lead man calling the shots.
Prediction: Sundevils
Point Spread: Devils by 7 points

If I was down South: 6A Clash
No. 7 Hobbs Eagles (1-0) vs No. 13 Las Cruces (0-1), Friday:
The defending 6A champions will look to keep a winning streak alive with a southern battle. The Eagles will be a change of pace for the Bulldawgs who scored a whopping 32 points in a loss in overtime earlier this week. The Eagles try scoring 32 points in the opening quarter. Both, however, struggle at points in their opening game, Hobbs with a slow first half and the Dawgs the game.
Prediction: Hawbs
Points Spread: Hawbs by 12 points

The Streak is 31 Games: Not a Big Three But Please Win
Chaparral (0-2) vs EP Fabens (TX) (0-1), Thursday:
The Lobos of Chaparral High School are averaging 37 points a game, dropping both opening contests. Not much to write about in this short preview but the Lobos might need this game more than any other program in the state. 31 losses dating back to 2013-2014 season and we are all rooting for the Lobos in border game.
Prediction: Chaparral
Point Spreads: Lobos by 1 point.

Grine's Record: 2-1

GRINE'S 5 RAPID FIRE

Cliff vs Cobre: The 1A Cowboys schedule is tougher, this game sould be close.
Alamogordo vs Deming (Fri.): Does the Tom Shield era continue winning in big ways.
Santa Teresa vs Deming (Sat.): Was game one a fluke for the Desert Warriors, we hope so.
Bloomfield vs Bosque (Sat.): Last season it was a close game (1 point). Bloomfield might be too good this season.
Mesa Vista vs Menaul: The Panthers have a 6'8 kid? Yup, go watch.

THREE PLAYERS TO KEEP AN EYE ON

Jordan Gonzales, Hobbs High School: Hello, Mr. Gonzales, welcome to the spotlight. I questioned the replacement of Trey Nelson. Well it's Jordan who went off fro 26-points in the opening win over Centennial.

Francis Castillo Y Mulert, Santa Fe Prep: FCYM (tried it out) went for 29 points against Bosque, I think it's safe to assume the same or 30-points tonight against East Mountain.

Jared Sessions, Alamogordo HS: Sessions had a coming out party of his own with 13 points on opening night against Santa Teresa. We are keeping tabs now Mr. Sessions.

More of this and that
  • Might try to catch another game this week in town.
  • Wish I could see the Gallup-Espanola game tonight.
