In 4A, the Portales Rams look to assert their dominance once more against the spirited Bernalillo Spartans. Additionally, the 3A faceoff between the West Las Vegas Dons and the New Mexico Military Colts is expected to provide an intense, down-to-the-wire competition.

These matchups are more than just games; they are a testament to the dedication, skill, and heart of New Mexico’s young athletes, ready to leave it all on the field and etch their names into the annals of high school football history.

6A Quarterfinal: #1 Cleveland Storm vs. #8 Hobbs Eagles

It's all set for an electrifying clash as the top-ranked Cleveland Storm (7-3) host the 8th seed, the Hobbs Eagles (6-5), in the 6A quarterfinals. Hobbs enters the contest fresh off a first-round victory over their rival, Clovis, setting the stage for an intense showdown on Friday night.

Team Dynamics: Hobbs brings a balanced offensive attack to the table, averaging approximately 170 rushing yards and 180 passing yards per game. Meanwhile, Cleveland is known for its ground game, amassing close to 180 rushing yards and 125 passing yards per game. Both teams have displayed their ability to put points on the board, averaging just over 30 points per game this season.

The Storm's Arsenal: The Cleveland Storm offense is a force to be reckoned with. Led by a young but promising quarterback in Jordan Hatch (2026), who has shown significant improvement this season with over 1200 passing yards. Harris Mbueha (2024) continues to be the go-to running back, boasting over 1200 rushing yards this season. However, the heart of the Storm lies in their defense, stacked with next-level talent. Psalamon Kegler (2025) stands out with 10.5 sacks and 49 total tackles. The likes of D1 recruit Stratton Shufelt (2024), Isaac Medrano (2024), and Chuka Tutman (2024) form a formidable defensive unit, arguably one of the best in New Mexico.

The Eagles' Offensive Prowess: Hobbs features a senior-led offense, spearheaded by running back Saul Armendariz (2024) with 1,121 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns entering this game. Quarterback Owen Callaway demonstrated his efficiency in the first round, going 10 for 11 for 187 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. Keep an eye on top target Jeremiah Jaquez (2024), who's proven to be a versatile threat with 841 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns (8 receiving) along with 148 rushing yards.

Prediction: While the Hobbs Eagles have shown flashes of brilliance this season, the Cleveland Storm's consistently loaded roster with next-level talent is hard to overlook. The Storm's defense, a pivotal factor in this matchup, is likely to limit the Eagles' offensive momentum. Predicting a Cleveland Storm victory with a score of 44-21, showcasing their depth and defensive prowess, ultimately proving to be the deciding factor in this quarterfinal showdown.

6A Quarterfinal #2 Centennial Hawks vs.#7 Las Cruces Bulldawgs

A Rematch Showdown. In a riveting rematch of the Las Cruces Public Schools' football programs, the 2nd seed Centennial Hawks (7-2 overall) gear up to kick off their postseason campaign after securing a bye by clinching the District 3-6A championship. They face the 7th seed Las Cruces Bulldawgs (6-5 overall), who, after their loss to Centennial in the District Championship (30-23), enter the quarterfinals following a dominant victory over the 10th seed, Los Lunas.

Team Dynamics: Las Cruces Bulldawgs exhibit strength in their run game but offer an intriguing dual-quarterback system that interlaces passing schemes with their ground attack. The team has notably improved offensively, scoring over 40 points in 6 of their last 7 games, boasting a 6-1 record in that stretch. Their lone sub-40 game was against Centennial, as previously mentioned.

Davis Steps Up: Centennial Hawks rely on a run-first offense, amassing over 205 rushing yards per game and scoring just over 31 points per game this season. Despite star quarterback Daniel Hernandez's absence, junior quarterback Zaiden Davis has admirably stepped up, guiding the offense efficiently. Davis is supported by standout receivers Jordan Lucas (2025) and Christian Ortiz (2024). Keep an eye on Lucas, who's expected to be a standout prospect this postseason. The Hawks' defensive front, led by seniors Juan Bitar, Julien Montano, and John Sierra, continues to shine.

Las Cruces' Intriguing Offensive Dynamics: The Las Cruces Bulldawgs bring an exciting offensive dynamic with the presence of two quarterbacks. 6-foot-3 junior Kelly Stevens and sophomore gun-slinger Gunnar Guardiola add an element of unpredictability to their offensive schemes. Not to be overlooked, sophomore running back Daniel Amaro has quietly been gaining attention, putting up impressive rushing performances this season.

Prediction: Anticipated to be another thrilling clash in Las Cruces, this rematch presents the Bulldawgs with an opportunity for redemption against the Hawks. Although the Bulldogs are poised to give Centennial a tough challenge, we'll stick with the favorite, Centennial, in a highly contested match. Predicting a close battle that might even extend into overtime, foreseeing a final score of Centennial 27-24 (OT). This rematch is expected to be a nail-biter, with both teams fighting tooth and nail until the very last possession.

6A Quarterfinal: #2 La Cueva Bears vs #7 Farmington Scorpions

In an electrifying clash that promises to showcase the best of high school football, the 3-seed La Cueva Bears (7-3 overall) are set to face the 11-seed Farmington Scorpions (6-5 overall) in the quarterfinals. The Bears, riding a powerful 7-game win streak, earned a bye into the quarterfinals after clinching the District 2-6A championship. The Scorpions, full of their own brand of energy, enter this round after an impressive upset victory over the 6-seed Volcano Vista Hawks in the first round. This showdown is a rematch from Distrit 2-6A, with La Cueva securing a commanding win in their previous encounter on Oct. 27th with a score of 63-28.

Team Dynamics: Both teams bring a touch of brilliance at the quarterback position, but their approaches differ. The Farmington Scorpions adopt a pass-first strategy, averaging an impressive 327 passing yards per game, accumulating a total of 408 yards per game. On the other hand, the La Cueva Bears showcase their strength on both sides of the ball, amassing 312 total yards per game, with 177 passing yards and 135 rushing yards, alongside a resilient defense that concedes only 16 points per game. La Cueva's defense stands tall, challenging Cleveland for the title of the best defense in the Land of Enchantment.

The Talented Bears: The Bears have a legacy of formidable teams from the 2000-2010 era, and this squad is on the brink of joining those ranks. Led by D-1 recruit Cameron Dyer (2025), the Bears' offense is potent, with Dyer accumulating over 1,700 passing yards and more than 800 rushing yards this season. Mason Posa (2025) stands out, attracting Power 5 offers and leading the team in tackles with 75 (57 solo) and 3 sacks. Watch for prospect Nick Mertz (2025) and emerging RB Cheeto Lumbrera III (2025). Seniors Cruz Markham and Jackson Hix add another layer of depth and talent to this Bears lineup.

The Scorpions' Offensive Weapon: The Scorpions derive their strength from senior quarterback Trel Griego, who boasts over 3,500 passing yards and 39 passing touchdowns this season. Griego's arm is supported by a quartet of receivers, including Michael Beck with over 1,100 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns, and Jace Vigil with an additional 846 yards and 8 touchdowns. Senior Isaac Foutz guides the Scorpions' defense, entrusted with the formidable task of containing the potent La Cueva offense.

Prediction: While the Farmington Scorpions have extended their season with exceptional performances, especially from quarterback Trel Griego, this talented La Cueva Bears team is a formidable force this season. Expect the Bears to maintain their dominance with a final score of La Cueva 48-23. The Scorpions may have had a remarkable journey, but stopping the Bears will be a formidable task, and La Cueva is primed to advance in this electrifying quarterfinal matchup.

6A Quarterfinal: #4 Sandia Matadors vs #5 Rio Rancho Rams

As the 6A New Mexico high school football quarterfinals approach, the anticipation is high for the clash between the 4-seed Sandia Matadors (8-2 overall) and the 5-seed Rio Rancho Rams (8-3 overall). Both teams have earned their spots after a season of impressive performances, setting the stage for an intense showdown.

Team Dynamics: The Rio Rancho Rams have showcased their ability to move the chains and have developed a solid passing attack as the season progressed. With a more balanced approach, they're averaging 341 total yards per game, split nearly evenly between 173 passing and 168 rushing yards. Sandia Matadors, on the other hand, exhibit a pass-first strategy, garnering 185 passing yards out of their total 270 per game. Both offenses have been consistent, scoring approximately 25 points per game and allowing close to 20 points per game.

Sandia Defensive X-Factor: For the Matadors, the passing offense is led by senior Cruz Rivera, who boasts 1,816 passing yards and 15 passing touchdowns this season. Wideouts Joey Harris (2025) and Jacob Adcox (2024) stand out as top receiving talents, contributing a significant portion of the passing yardage and 10 of Rivera's touchdown passes. The Matadors' defense, spearheaded by Jeremiah Bustillos (2025) with 87 total tackles, is a defining factor. Luke Gonzales (2024) and Thomas Adams (2025) contribute significantly to a defense that allows a mere 18 points per game, with Adams registering a team-high 5 sacks.

Rio Rancho Defensive Approach: On the defensive front, linebacker Andrew Gustafson (2024) has been instrumental, leading the Rams with an impressive 100 total tackles, followed by contributors like Michael Jaquez (2024), Jacob Lesperance (2025), and Ryan Brown (2024), forming a defense that concedes only 20 points per game. Quarterback JJ Arellano (2025) leads the charge with 1,524 passing yards and 16 touchdowns this season. Key offensive players include the dynamic trio of Arellano, running back Rayce Ramirez (2024), and wide receiver Austin Raymer (2024). Arellano's passing prowess is complemented by Ramirez's 1,000+ rushing yards and Raymer's 701 receiving yards this season.

Prediction: In what promises to be an evenly matched game, the coin flip of the night comes down to which offense can make the breakthrough against two stout defensive units. The edge is given to the playmakers on the Rams' side, forecasting an upset with a score of 27-21 in favor of Rio Rancho. This win propels the Rams into the semifinals, potentially setting the stage for a riveting rematch against their rival, Cleveland.

5A Quarterfinal: #1 Roswell Coyotes vs. #9 Mayfield Trojans

The stage is set for a thrilling rematch between District 4-5A opponents, the 1-seed Roswell Coyotes (10-0 overall) and the 9-seed Mayfield Trojans (5-6 overall). In their previous encounter, the Coyotes secured a decisive victory with a 48-15 scoreline in Roswell. Returning to the Wool Bowl, the Coyotes enter as heavy favorites, powered by the dynamic offensive duo of seniors Manny Fuentez (2024) and Bryce Sanchez (2024). Both players have showcased their talent throughout the season, making them potential candidates for top player rankings and postseason accolades.

The Mayfield Trojans earned their spot in the quarterfinals after an upset victory over the 8-seed Gadsden Panthers, winning by a narrow margin of 13-12. The Trojans bring a talented group of players, including quarterback Luke Linnan and defensive leader Bobby Herrera. Despite their underdog status, the Trojans aim to challenge the Coyotes.

Prediction: Roswell has maintained a consistent top-10 ranking regardless of classification throughout the season and is favored to advance to the semifinals. The Coyotes are expected to secure a 40-14 victory, building on their dominant form.

5A Quarterfinal: #3 Piedra Vista Panthers vs. #6 Valley Vikings

The 3-seed Piedra Vista Panthers (5-5 overall) and the 6-seed Valley Vikings (8-3 overall) set the stage for an exciting 5A quarterfinal matchup in the 2023 postseason. This game promises to be a must-watch, as the Albuquerque-based Valley Vikings travel to the northwest corner to face the Panthers from Farmington.

The Valley Vikings boast a formidable running back duo in Charles Lopez-Burton (2024) and Tazhe Wilson (2024). Lopez-Burton has been exceptional, amassing 1,784 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns this season. The Panthers, who played in the 5A state championship last season, have found their rhythm, winning 5 of their last 6 games. Piedra Vista's offense is led by quarterback Felipe Begaye, supported by key players like Bodie Costa, Dylan McCoy, Brig Keiser, Andreas Romero, Hunter Schwartz, and Adrian Jacquez.

Prediction: While an upset in favor of Valley was contemplated, the track record of Panthers head coach Jared Howell weighed heavily in their favor. The Panthers are expected to secure the win, but Valley will keep it close with a final score of 30-24.

4A Quarterfinal: #4 Portales Rams vs. #5 Bernalillo Spartans

The 4A quarterfinals feature a showdown between the 4-seed Portales Rams (9-1 overall) and the 5-seed Bernalillo Spartans (8-3). Throughout the 2023 season, the Portales Rams have consistently been ranked at the top, making them a favorite to contend for the 4A state championship. They boast a talented quarterback in Paxton Culpepper and previously secured a convincing 38-0 win over Bernalillo in late October.

Prediction: Manny Chavez leads the Rams' defense, which has been a dominant force in 4A football. Despite stellar seasons for Uriel Casto, Mason McChriston, and Diego Molinar, the Bernalillo Spartans face a challenging task. The Rams are projected to advance to the semifinals with a commanding 36-7 victory.

3A Quarterfinal: #4 West Las Vegas Dons vs. #5 New Mexico Military Colts

The 3A quarterfinals present a unique matchup between the 4-seed West Las Vegas Dons (7-3 overall) and the 5-seed New Mexico Military Colts (9-2). The only 3A game scheduled for 5 pm, this clash promises to be a battle of ground attacks, with both teams favoring a run-heavy offensive strength. The outcome may be decided by the team that has possession of the ball on the final drive.

Prediction: CJ Perea and Johnathon Gonzales have been standout performers for the Dons, who have been in impressive form this season. The Dons have the potential to compete for a state championship if they can advance past the Colts. However, the Colts, led by Cole Seidenberger and Cohen Tomasits, bring momentum and depth to the game, making for an intriguing contest. The Colts are expected to secure a narrow victory, winning 16-14.
