Week 6 Recap: What Happened on Friday Night
We recap everything for week 6 of the New Mexico High School football season. Several upsets on Friday night.
Top-25 Recap
No. 1 Rio Rancho 49, No. 22 Sandia 0: Josh Foley opened the game with a 20-yard touchdown run followed by 74-yard receiving touchdowns as the number one ranked Rio Rancho Rams moved to (6-0) on the season. Rams quarterback Nic Little also with a big night with a pair of touchdowns including a 39-touchdown run. Sandia falls to 2-3 on the season dropping their third consecutive game.
No. 2 Cleveland 49, Atrisco Heritage Academy 21: The Cleveland Storm moved to (6-0) on the season with a 49-21 win over Atrisco Heritage Academy. The AHA Jaguars fall to (0-4) on the season as they are still in search for their first win on the season. Next week the battle between the Storm and Rams will close down Rio Rancho, New Mexico as both city teams are a combined 12-0.
No. 4 Volcano Vista 57, Highland 6: The Volcano Vista Hawks improve to (5-1) on the season with a mercy rule win over Highland who falls to (0-4) on the season.
No. 6 Artesia 39, No. 11 Los Lunas 21: The Bulldogs of Artesia jumped out quick on the Los Lunas Tigers with a Ryan Gallegoes touchdown. The Bulldogs improve to (5-1) on the season while Los Lunas drops their first game of the season to go to (5-1) on the year. Artesia quarterback Taylor Null found Tyler Greenwood for a pair of touchdown passes in the win (7 and 5 yards out). Los Lunas running back O'maury Samuels paced the way for the Tigers with a 47-yard touchdown run.
No. 8 Onate 31, No. 6 Mayfield 28: In a back and forth game the Onate Knights get one of the biggest wins on the season as they move to (4-2, 2-1) on the season. Mayfield falls to (3-3, 2-1) on the season with the loss. This is the first time since 1993 according to Mark Rudi of the Las Cruces Sun that the Knights have beat Mayfield. Aaron Sanchez hit the scene tonight for the Knights with a monster game that started with a 15-yard touchdown run along with a 37-yard touchdown run.
No. 9 Centennial 35, No. 19 Carlsbad 28: The Centennial Hawks hit the road on Friday night and come out with a too close for comfort win over Carlsbad. The Hawks improve to (5-1) on the season with the win. Carlsbad falls to (2-4) on the season.
No. 17 Roswell 38, Farmington 28: Farmington was the first to strike in the 5A contest taking a 6-0 lead but it was the Roswell Coyotes from that point on. It was a touchdown run by Kyser to get the Coyotes started on their way to a (5-1) record. Farmington falls to (0-4-1) on the season as they are still in search for their first win of the season.
No. 20 Belen 42, Deming 0: The Belen Eagles move to (5-1) on the season with a shutout win on homecoming night over the winless Deming Wildcats. The Eagles had several players reach the end zone including a 24-yard touchdown pass by Zach Hamilton to Brandon Carrejo.
No. 24 Goddard 34, No. 15 Alamogordo 31: In a surprising win the Goddard Rockets led by the duo of Cameron Stevenson and Devon Quiroz even their record to 3-3 on the season. Stevenson started the night with a pair of touchdowns followed by two second half touchdowns by Quiroz to help the Rockets pull off the upset win. Alamogordo's Kyle Hooper paced the way for the Tigers with 189-passing yards and two touchdowns.

Shocker: Cobre 57, Lordsburg 19. The top team in 2A, the favorite, found an upset loss to Cobre.
Business: Capitan 60, Texico. Ranked third in 3A football the Capitan Tigers show why they belong in the conversation.
The other 1 vs 2: Estancia 34, Dexter 6. Both teams are ranked in the Fab 50 from 3A football but it was Estancia who still has the keys that came out with a statement win.
19 and Counting: Los Alamos 25, Santa Fe 18. Santa Fe fought and scored, held a lead at one point but drop their 19th straight game.
Bubble Hopefully. Bloomfield 26, Valencia 24. The Bloomfield Bobcats have played two close games in consecutive weeks but hold on for a 2-point win over Valencia. A loss would have popped any bubble.
Under the Radar. Ruidoso 36, Silver 33. After trading touchdowns the entire night it was an Alex Bates touchdown on 4th down to secure the win over the Warriors.
Undefeated: Socorro 35, Albuquerque Academy 6. The number of undefeated teams is slim and the least talked about team is the 6-0 Socorro Warriors under first year head coach Andrew McCraw.
Mr. Football Race
Josh Foley, Rio Rancho: The senior from Rio Rancho High School continues to wow the crowd as he poured in more touchdowns including a 74-yard receiving touchdown. He seems to continue putting up games and big plays to have him sit alone at the top of the race.
Taylor Null, Artesia: The junior quarterback is putting himself among the top of the quarterbacks in New Mexico. He had a pair of touchdown passes in the clash between number one and number two in 5A football.
Ezekiel Tapia, Estancia. The running back had some shoes to fill coming into the season and a pair of 50 plus touchdown runs he is starting to catch steam as a name you must know. He had a 55-yard touchdown run on the night.
