Week One: Preview, Picks & Predictions in New Mexico high school football
Grine | NMPreps

Each week we will breakdown the games to watch in New Mexico high school football. We will also release our staff picks and predictions for each game taking place that week.

6A FOOTBALL

No. 2 Clovis High School vs No. 7 Hobbs High School: We could reference this game as a rivalry contest between the eastern schools but Clovis has won more than enough here. The Wildcats also feature one of the most talented teams not only in Wildcat history but New Mexico history. With several players already committed to play at the next level all eyes will be on the purple and white. Star running back Jeston Webskowski (2021) is the name we all know and the one that could rack several post season awards. The Hobbs Eagles won't back down though and for second-year head coach Ken Stevens the Eagles are coming for a win. The Eagles have some talent of their own and look to returning players like Jarren Lewis (QB) who passed for nearly 2000 yards last season. Grine's Pick: Clovis. Line: Clovis -18.5

No. 6 Carlsbad High School vs Artesia High School: The Cavemen enter the season with a handful of uncertainties after graduating a talented class in 2020. The Cavemen took the Eddy County rivalry game last season 48-35 and look to maintain the upper hand on rival Artesia. The Bulldogs bring top 35 player Braxton McDonald into the contest and will look to avenge the loss on opening night in 2019. The Bulldog will also feature a new QB under center this coming season, a position that guides this air it out attack. Grine's Pick: Artesia. Line: Artesia -3.5

5A FOOTBALL

No. 4 Artesia High School at Carlsbad High School: The Cavemen enter the season with a handful of uncertainties after graduating a talented class in 2020.

No. 5 Farmington High School at Aztec High School: The Scorpions will take on former district foe and 4A's Aztec this Friday night. The Scorpions feature one of the top QB-WR duos in Caleb Carrillo (QB/2021) and Chance Carrillo (WR/2022). Caleb returns after passing for 2,968-yards last season and 35-touchdowns. Aztec took a loss last season, 56-33, to the Scorpions but hope to build off having an inexperienced roster of underclassmen in 2019. Marcquis Henry (2023) had a stellar freshman campaign and is a sophomore will many eyes on his progression. Grine's Pick: Farmington. Line: Farmington -15.5

No. 6 Alamogordo High School vs Bloomfield High School: This contest will take place at Bernalillo High School this season and provides us a quality match up with Alamogordo returning as a favorite in 5A football and Bloomfield returning after falling in the 4A state championship last season. Alamogordo features one of the top players in New Mexico with Sean Hays (2021/RB) looking to make a name known this season. Bloomfield has holes to fill, a new QB, RB, and will look to Bryce Perez (2021/WR) and Raymundo Alcantar (2021/WR) as the top returning players for the Bobcats. Grine's Pick: Alamogordo. Line: Alamogordo -12

No. 7 Piedra Vista vs No. 11 Miyamura: The only game this week between two 5A programs. The Piedra Vista Panthers won 8-games last season, winning a playoff game, and hope to stay among the top in the classification. The Panthers did graduate some of their go-to players last season but the future looks bright and word is the underclassmen could carry them forward for the next few years. Miyamura enters the season without their top quarterback, after he played fall football in Arizona this season. They return some players from last season that contributed well but it could be a year of new players taking on new roles. Grine's Pick: PV. Line: Piedra Vista -14
