Week Three: Friday Night Review
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com
Did we warn you that I would be wrong? Yes. However, this football season has the team we know at the top and several in the middle just looking for that edge.
Where We Missed.....
Lovington again: The Wildcats fall to (0-3) on the season after dropping a game to 4A Ruidoso, 57-34. Ruidoso improved to (1-2) on the season with the win and likely stay alive in the playoff hunt with impressive running by Cisco Mayville.
Sal Yanez, RB, Onate: Well someone snuck into the back of the classroom as Yanez is a new name on the scene who rushed for 160-yards on the night. Onate was picked against as well in this game by yours truly as they beat Sandia, 40-29.
Cleveland Storm: The win streak stays alive as they avoid the Las Cruces Bulldawgs relentless efforts to get the win. Storm running back Shawn Nieto continues to impress and led with his 5-touchdowns we might start thinking City of Vision State Championship could be a possibility.
Too Early Awards.....
Coach Who Earned Free Pancakes Tomorrow: Shaun Wigley, Gateway. We hardly talk small school football but the Warriors are ranked 50th and answered a huge test tonight with a shutout win, 56-0 against a potential "contender" in Magdalena. This class might be back to a two-horse race.
Class President: Gabino Rodriguez, Dexter. More Small School love right now as we have 4-touchdowns by Rodriguez as the Demons win the Battle of theBridges game defeating Hagerman, 42-0.
Hall Pass: Taylor Null, Artesia. Did we count out the Bulldogs this season? Not really but really who would have predicted them to be this good. Null, has missed a beat and throws for 4-touchdowns today. Could be in the conversation for Mr. Football.
More Newcomers After Three Weeks
Nick Gaerlan, Los Lunas: The young quarterback for the Los Lunas Tigers (3-0) was impressive passing for 4-touchdowns on the night. He could be a huge reason why the Tigers play on the final day of football.
Avery Norton, Piedra Vista: We don't have numbers on the young man from tonight but we heard that he was carrying the school bus after the game (not really) but he moved the chains while taking Durango, Colorado players with him.
Rapid Fire
Comeback: Carlsbad, came back and held the lead under 1-minute.
New Coach: Greg Henington moved Belen to 3-0.
WR Love: Alex Ramirez. Over 100-yards all purpose including a 65-punt return.
WR Love Part 2: Martin Trujillo of Los Lunas was on the other end of Gaerlan passes.
Don't Forget About Me: Dee Smith of Alamogordo had some impressive TD runs. Finished with 177-yards and 4-touchdowns.
Didn't See That Coming: Fab 50 Loss - Grants upsets Los Alamos, 21-20.
RB Radar: JR Vargas rushed for 178-yards tonight in the Capital win.
The Kicker: Send us the kickers.
D-FENCE Send us some names.
Special Teams Send us the players and stats.
OL Love: Who was it?
DL Love: Who Was it?
