No. 1 Carlsbad (2-0) used their club on No. 15 Gadsden (5-3) in a 59-42 win, a game they led for the majority. No. 3 Onate Knights (2-1) shined their light on the No. 10 Volcano Vista (1-1) Hawks in a 19-point win (58-39). The No. 4 Hope Christian Huskies (1-0) sled their way past the Atrisco Jaguars (0-3) to the first win of the season, 66-59. No. 6 Hobbs Eagles (2-2) fall to 3-2 with a one point loss to Odessa, Texas, 74-73. The Dawgs of Las Cruces (No. 16; 1-3) escaped the unranked Tigers of Alamogordo (3-2) with a 64-62 win that needed extra time. No. 17 Capital (3-0) needed a signature win, they got it, as they stall take off on the No. 25 Goddard Rockets (2-2), 57-50. No. 25 Espanola Valley (3-2) 'Devils took the battle of down under, beating the Demons of Santa Fe (0-3), 55-51.

Out of town teams from Colorado, Texas and California traveled to the Land of Enchantment this weekend. New Mexico
didn't show well against the visitors.

No. 2 Albuquerque 60, No. 19 La Cueva 50: The Bulldogs moved to (3-0) on the season as they top No. 19 La Cueva (1-1) on Thursday night.

No. 4 Cleveland 74, No. 16 Las Cruces 65: The Cleveland Storm moved to (3-0) on the season with a 9-point win over No. 16 Las Cruces who falls to (0-3) on the
season.

No. 7 Rio Rancho 89, Highland 72: The Rio Rancho Rams moved to 2-1 on the season with a scoring frenzy of a night. Rio Rancho guards Clay Patterson, 25 points and Juan Hurt, 27 points led all scorers.

No. 8 Valley 64, No. 14 Cibola 58: The Valley Vikings moved to (1-1) on the season as they topped the No. 14 Cibola Cougars (1-1).

Pueblo, Colorado 74, No. 20 Espanola Valley: In Santa Fe the No. 20 Espanola Valley Sundevils fell to (2-2) on the season. Christian Fernandez led the way for the Sundevils with 17 points on the night. Azaziah Salazar (13 points) and Uriah Arrellano (14 points) were two others in double-digits.

No. 25 Goddard 60, Santa Teresa 40: The Goddard Rockets ran away with a 20-point win in the first round of the Al Armandariz tournament held at Capital High School.

  • West over Mora: Mora nearly pulled a huge upset behind 25 points by Casimiro Fresquez (2016).

Tuesday Recap

No. 1 Carlsbad 64, No. 25 Goddard 53: The Carlsbad Cavemen (1-0) opened the season with a close call against 5A Goddard (1-1) on Tuesday night. Brenden Boatwright led the way for the Cavemen with 21-points on the night. LeAnthony Harrison paced the way for Goddard with 23-points.

No. 7 Rio Rancho 67, No. 20 Espanola Valley 56: The Rams move to (2-0) on the season with a Top-25 win over Espanola Valley (2-1) at home on Tuesday. The Rams were led by junior guard Clay Patterson who finished the night with 24 points. Juan Hurt also poured in 19 points in the win for the Rams. Uriah Arrellano led the way for the Sundevils with 24 points.

No. 9 Grants 64, Piedra Vista 55: The Grants Pirates improved to (2-0) on the season with a 9-point win over Piedra Vista Tuesday night. Junior shooting guard Matt Vail led the way for the Pirates with 17 points. Three other Pirates finished the evening with 14 points in the win.

No. 17 Rio Grande 61, No. 18 Capital 56: The Ravens of Rio Grande moved to (2-0) on the season with a Top-25 win over Capital (1-1). The Ravens were led by Marshall Moore who had 22 points on the evening. Jeremy Anaya (14 points) and Eric Coca (12 points) led the way for Capital.

No. 23 Los Lunas 40, Kirtland Central 27: Kayden Walker and Martin Trujillo led the way for the Tigers (1-1) on the road with 13 points each. The Tigers evened their record to (1-1) while the Broncos open their season (0-1).

Top Three Performers

Clay Patterson, G/Jr, Rio Rancho HS: The junior guard has opened the season with back-to-back 20-point games, this one finishing with 24.

Marshall Moore, G/Sr, Rio Grande HS: In the South Valley Marshall Moore helped the Ravens move to 2-0 with a 22-point performance.

Brenden Boatwright, F/Jr., Carlsbad HS: Boatwright led the way for the Cavemen with 21-points, helping the number one team in New Mexico start (1-0).

Rapid Fire: This and That
  • Surprise Final: Piedra Vista stayed close with No. 9 Grants, 64-55.
  • Not Surprised Final: No. 2 Albuquerque High moving along to (2-0).
  • Too Close For Comfort: No. 1 Carlsbad had to find a way to avoid the upset and trailed No. 25 Goddard at one point.
  • Just Right for a Top-25 Game: No. 17 Rio Grande and No. 18 Capital appeared to be a close game, just as one ranked this close should be.
  • Say What, Upset: Dexter over Ruidoso by five?
  • Bubble Time: Clovis on the road with a come from behind win by one over Santa Fe.
  • The Head to Head: Gallup falls to St. Pius X by 2. The Bengals more middle tier team?
  • Oh Really?: Well, Cleveland is a lot better than I predicted. My Bad. The No. 4 Storm win again over No. 3 Onate.
