Week three for lack of a better term was a quiet night. Not to much excitement or 'upsetting' news on the football scene. The teams that should have won - won. It was the week that showed the teams that are so-called contenders and pretenders.
THE "BIG" 3 FOR FRIDAY
1. The Comeback, Cibola over Valley, 15-14: The Cougars down 14-0 at the half came back to take out the Vikings to stay in playoff contention. Losing this game would have been costly for the Cougars in terms of a playoff spot. Of the games last night this one didn't divide anyone but brought some excitement in terms of a late finish.
2. Hobbs on the board, beat Roswell (42-14): The Eagles finally found the win they were looking for n the likes of unranked Roswell. The Eagles with a brutal opening schedule playing Top-10 teams Mayfield and Artesia. The game does hurt but didn't exactly help much but it's always nice to win your first game of the season.
3. Are the Rams a top team, beat La Cueva 28-3: Okay every team is different and the good news the Rams win to move to 2-1. The defense held La Cueva to a field goal and the Rams, a predicted playoff team, remains in that conversation but still waiting to see if they are a Top-4.
FRIDAY TITLES AND AWARDS
Not the official awards or teams just surprising stats for the night listed. Get yours in for your team.
Coach Who Earned His Coaching Parking Spot: Jeff Dalton, Farmington Head Coach: The Scorpions move to 3-0 with the win over Belen in a scoring affair. I predicted them 1-2 at this point of the season.
Coach Who Needs A Parking Spot: Miguel Medina, Espanola Valley Head Coach: There was a time that Espanola was the homecoming game for every program, good or bad. The Sundevils were 0-10 and not much headline. Right now for the first time in (insert here) the Sundevils are 3-0. What is the old comic speech "Playoffs? Playoffs?"
Homecoming King: Josh Houghtaling, Artesia/OB: Josh continues to do what he does best and put up points on the scoreboard. Someone give him a free lunch ticket at the cafeteria this week. 5 touchdown passes and it's hard to pass (intended) on him this week.
Free Student Parking Pass: Dante Urrea, Deming/RB: Each week we learn a little more about the running back tucked away in the southwest corner of New Mexico. Urrea scores four touchdowns this week to add to his six last week.
Student President: Jesus Vargas, Capital/RB: The Capital High School running back poured in 249-yards and three touchdowns on the night. This is becoming the year of the running back as several are getting touchdowns and racking up the yards.
Free Lunch: Marcus Bramwell Artesia/OL: What better way to reward the unsung heroes from the line as Brammell provide the blocking and time for QB Houghlting to make those five passes. Bramwell and company approved for free lunch in the cafeteria this week.
Make sure to nominate and list top performers: Week Three Top Players
