Week Three: The Week That Was
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

Each week, just when we start to see trends and use our brilliant minds (did you laugh), to predict the field we have a team that starts flat or another that might need some work to their resume.

Past Weeks: One | Two

TRENDING: THE BIG FIVE FOR WEEK 3

The Big Five each week we take a look at the headlines that stick out to us and the one every person that loves hoops should know about.

1. The 64 Point Night: We have to start on the ladies side with Ramah High School guard Jordan Lewis going off for 64-points! Lewis hit thirteen 3-pointers on the night in a 19-point win for Ramah. Likely a record breaking night for Lewis.

2. Capital Protecting New Mexico: On a week that New Mexico teams struggled against our visitors the Jaguars led by this nice little duo held their own. The Jaguars beat Pueblo West (Colorado), 52-45 in the title game of the Al Armendariz Tournament (Santa Fe, New Mexico). The Jaguars went (3-0) during the tournament.

3. Another 5A Power, Still A Power: The St. Pius X Sartans are off to a (3-0) start with two wins over Top-10 5A ranked teams in Gallup and Bernalillo. This week the Sartans completely trashed Los Alamos (75-49) and Bernalillo (75-43).

4. The Pride of the Valley....Might be For Real: The Rio Grande Ravens moved to (4-0) on the season with a three wins this week over Capital, Eldorado and La Cueva. Not to sure if the Ravens under head coach Sean Jimenez have ever beat Eldorado and La Cueva in the same season.

5. Add These Two Teams To The 4A Convo?: Still to early to tell but the Pojoaque Valley Elks moved to (3-0) beating Kirtland Central (67-45) this week in an outcome that we didn't see happening by that amount. Also, the Bloomfield Bobcats we see you! A (4-0) start with a win over Shiprock (43-41) in the Shiprock Tournament.

TRACKER: THE UNDEFEATED. LET'S RANK 'EM.

Each week we will track those teams that still have yet to lose a game this season. Note before you post or reply, these are not our NMPreps.com Team Rankings.

6A - We Rank Em Based On Win Quality (SOS taken into consideration)
1. Albuquerque (4-0)
2. Cleveland (3-0)
3. Rio Grande (4-0)
4. Carlsbad (3-0)
Why: Cleveland has a win over Top-5 Onate but Albuquerque has the win over Rio Rancho and Volcano Vista. Add in La Cueva and that's four wins over four Top-25 teams. Hello!

5A - We Rank Em Based On Win Quality (SOS taken into consideration)
1. Grants (2-0)
2. St. Pius X (3-0)
3. Roswell (3-0)
4. Belen (3-0)
5. Miyamura (2-0)
Why: Grants two wins over Piedra Vista and Farmington barely edges St. Pius wins over Bernalillo and Gallup.

4A - We Rank Em Based On Win Quality (SOS taken into consideration)
1. Hope (2-0)
2. Bloomfield (4-0)
3. Pojoaque Valley (3-0)
4. St. Michael's (1-0)
5. West Las Vegas (2-0)
6. Zuni (1-0)
Why: Bloomfield over PV as the Shiprock win might look better as Kirtland Central is on the struggle. West Las Vegas 2-point win hurt.

THE BOTTOM: THE WINLESS

1. Highland (0-3): The Hornets have played a brutal schedule and still the best winless team. Losses to Cleveland, Hope and Rio Rancho.
2. Atrisco Heritage (0-3): Not a bad schedule with losses to Sandia, Gallup and Hope. However, this trend my go into January. They have La Cueva, Eldorado and Cibola up next.
3. Albuquerque Academy (0-4)
4. Bernalillo (0-1)
5. Lovington (0-2)
6. Kirtland Central (0-3)
7. Del Norte (0-3)
8. Kirtland Central (0-3)
9. Socorro (0-4)
10. Aztec (0-5)
11. Valencia (0-2)
12. Hot Springs (0-3)
13. East Mountain (0-3)
14. Chaparral (0-6)

Radar: NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball Candidates

Each week we will try to narrow down the players who are on our radar. Plenty of room for others to jump on the list.

1. Johnny McCants, Sr/F, Onate HS: Yes, we all are well aware of McCants but each night he is putting up double-doubles are close to it. This week again he led his team to wins, one over top-10 ranked Valley in a game he put 20-points down. He also had 18 in a win over Volcano Vista. Last Week No. 1

2. Clay Patterson, Jr/G, Rio Rancho HS: Patterson, the junior for the Rams, has been on a hot streak since the start of the season. This week he again put in two big games, he put 24 points on Espanola Valley and a 25 point, 6 assist night against Highland.

3. Eric Coca, Sr/G, Capital HS: Coca is certainly the name to know in 5A basketball this season. Averaged roughly 15 points per game this week, leading his team to the championship of the Al Armendariz Tournament.

4. Marshall Moore, G/Sr, Rio Grande HS: Averaged 20 points a game (22 vs. Capital/18 vs La Cueva) this week. Moore, might have been off the radar this season in regards to the top award but you can see he tops the list now. The Ravens are (4-0) and he is playing well.

5. Uriah Arellano, Sr/G, Espanola Valley HS: Another guard that has been mentioned, so why not place him on the radar. Arellano, averaged 16 points a game this week along with around 5 assists per game. The one that sticks out is a 24-point performance against Rio Rancho.

Just Missed the List: Juan Hurt (Rio Rancho), Matt Vail (Grants), Jeremy Anaya (Capital), Emillo Arellano (St. Pius X), Anthony Chavez (Valley), Brendan Boatwright (Carlsbad).
