Week Three: Weekend Recap

There were several tournaments this weekend that saw great basketball action. Many teams walked out of the weekend with a perfect record, while others found out exactly what they need to work on to improve.

Teams

The Logan Longhorns (3-0) won a tournament by defeating Bosque, NACA and Coronado (TX). They didn’t allow an opponent to get over 25 points this weekend and scored a total of 143 points throughout the tournament.

Shiprock hosted the Jerry Richardson Memorial tournament and came away with the blue trophy. They defeated Navajo Pine by 65 points, San Juan by 49 and Farmington by 24. It’s safe to say Shiprock will ve another 4A powerhouse this season.

Tularosa headed to Santa Rosa this weekend where they dominated to take the first place trophy. They started off by taking down Rehoboth 74-34, then knocked out Fort Sumner with a 27 point victory, then handed a defeat to Tucumcari with a score of 80 to 34. Cassie Vickery, a Junior and Senior Shania Gilliland led the pack for the Wildcats. Vickery scored a total of 78 points this weekend, while Gilliland had a 53 point tournament.

The Gallup Bengals (5-0) were another team to win their home tournament this weekend. They dominated Tohatchi by a score of 101-66 in the first round. Then knocked out Miyamura and Cleveland for the trophy. The Bengals did not score less than 75 points all weekend.

Piedra Vista was crowned champions as well this weekend. They took down Taos, Navajo Prep and Jemez Valley. Nikki Benally, a senior, paved the way for the Panthers by scoring more than 20 points in every game. Her best game came in the championship where she knocked down 28.

In non-tournament games, several metro teams dominated the court, while some southern teams remain undefeated.

Cibola tacked onto their 3-0 start this season with a 69-18 victory over Rio Grande.
Eldorado took a 4 point victory over Mayfield.
La Cueva split the weekend with two former state champions, with a 4 point loss to Hope Christian and a 10 point victory over Los Lunas.
Valley took down Rio Rancho with a score of 55-45 and Volcano remains perfect at 3-0 with a 61-43 win over Los Alamos.
Cuba is now 5-0 after a nice victory over Penasco.
Lovington opened their season with an easy victory over Ruidoso, while Roswell (3-0) took down 6A powerhouse, Mayfield by 4 points.

Top Players from Week Three

Several players throughout the state had some big games this weekend to help their team on the tournament road. Jade Hill of Cleveland knocked in 27 points and brought down 15 rebounds against Winslow (AZ). Capital played Chaparral and Gabriella Ortiz dropped 17, while teammate Rachel Friend had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophie Long has continued to lead the way for the Academy Chargers, as she had a double- double, with 18 points and 10 rebounds against Del Norte. Goddard Senior Jenna Hernandez had an important 19 point game against Santa Fe. Kara Burton, a senior at Springer had to 20 plus point games this weekend at the Trinidad State Junior College Invite.
