IT'S FRIDAY: THE WEEKEND TRENDS
Okay, I have been swamped with getting together volleyball, boy's hoops and girl's hoops material out.
Well, I return this week in hopes that I see an improvement in my Pick 'EM standing. If you haven't noticed that my Top-5 Questions for Top-25 teams and Weekend Bold Picks have been missing, you're not missing much (haha).
Today, I'll throw a combo for both of them (sorry a day late).
WEEKEND TRENDS
In this feature I pick three bold picks that will be "trending". You know like last week when I had on our scoreboard that Volcano Vista beat Rio Rancho, then that didn't happen. My bad!
1. The Upset Pick - La Cueva beats Sandia: I needed to reach with my "upset" pick and I didn't feel comfortable with Valencia over Centennial, Roswell over Artesia (though I was highly tempted) and Carlsbad over Alamogordo. La Cueva is my upset pick. Do I have an expert reason - nope. La Cueva doesn't put up a lot of point but they normally don't give up a lot of points either (175). Sandia is not a team that will explode on the offensive side (212) so maybe the Bears win a low scoring affair?
2. The Score - Valencia keeps it low-ish; Centennial 24, Valencia 8: Okay, 24 used to be a high number when defense was important (yes, kill me for saying that) but we live in the time of 40-50 point games. This one could be a blowout but Valencia ends on a high note. They don't score points but they could keep this one from getting away from them by eating the clock up running the ball.
3. The Stat - 5 Touchdown, 153 yards; Dante Urrea, Deming HS: Okay, this dude has been carrying the load and I possibly have had him on my bold picks before but I want to use him again. Deming wins over Mayfield and Urrea scores on a 40-yard TD to win. He wins player of the week with those numbers and the win? (Why I am using a question mark - I don't know.
Record: Around 9-3 on picks for weekend trends. I don't remember past picks so I give myself the benefit (haha).
THREE QUESTIONS FOR THE TOP-25
1. Will a loss actually help? Is Cleveland all the Thunder? The last top-10 team that they played was a close contest against Eldorado (41-34 win). Volcano Vista is the team to make an upset a reality in this contest. The Hawks are getting healthy and their defenses hasn't allowed outrages numbers. A loss is never, truly good or fun but maybe a loss here a good thing? Plenty of questions in this one.
2. Is Roswell a "dark horse"? Ranked 20th in the NMPreps.com Top-25 and could be on the rise with a win or keeping it close. Roswell doesn't allow a lot of points (130 ranked 7th in 5A) and the Bulldogs lost ''only" scoring 25 (Yes, I know Houghtling was out). Roswell can sneak a win if they keep it low.
3. What 4A Top-25 team is the real deal - No. 23 Portales or No. 21 Hatch Valley? Portales takes on the reigning champ and Hatch takes on the scary of the two opponents in 5-2 Cobre. Losing team likely falls out of the Top-25 (maybe) while the winning team becomes the favorite. Both are putting up serious numbers (Portales 307 ranked 2nd) and Hatch Valley (387 ranked first).
PICK'EM
As you know I love Pick'Em and it's cool that we have chatter about the leaderboard. Well I have fallen to third place after having top picks in week 3 and 4. Well, I am already down one upset in Cibola not beating Rio Rancho. Lee Corso I am not; Well, actually this year maybe as he is around 1-5 on his picks (Gameday College football). Anyhow, it's Friday! I like going 3-0 on weekend trends and have had success so let's see.
