Today, we sit down with Belen High School junior Diego Avila a top running back/safety in 5A football to watch this season. Avila rushed for 600-yards and and 7-touchdowns last season as a sophomore for a 7-4 Belen team that won a playoff game. Avila also had 54-total tackles on defense.
INTERVIEW
Grine: Start with the basics for us.
DA: Diego Avila, Belen HS. I play running back, free safety, and punt/kick returner.
Grine: What sports do you play at Belen?
DA: Football, baseball, and I wrestle.
Grine: What is your jersey number and why?
DA: #3. I've always wore that number since I was a little kid. I've worn it in every sport that I've played.
Grine: Do you have any nicknames?
DA: A few friends call me D, which is just short for Diego.
Grine: If you had a superpower, what would it be?
DA: Super strength or invisible.
Grine: What are the first three songs on your pregame playlist?
DA: Anything by Lil Baby, Travis Scott, or Lil Durk.
Grine: What is your perfect pregame meal?
DA: My perfect pre game meal is probably spaghetti or pasta
Grine: Funniest person on the team?
DA: I’d say one of my friends Manual Marquez
Grine: What are your strengths as a player?
DA: I’d say definitely my speed and agility.
Grine: How did you get into the game and who are some of the influences on your life?
DA: Nobody really got me into it I got myself into the game. Probably my family has been the biggest influence, so I could make them proud and make it fun for them to watch me.
Grine: What is the plan after you graduate?
DA: Go to college and see if I could make a career out of sports
Grine: What are some expectations for your team this year? Goals?
DA: I have high expectations for my team this year I expect us to have a really good record going into the playoffs and then we hope to win a championship.
Grine: What makes it special playing at your school?
DA: Probably playing for everyone in the town because they have so much pride for the town and team.
Grine: Leave us with a quote.
DA: "Nothing worth having comes easy"
