6A Player of the Week:Brady Patterson (Rio Rancho High), senior guard

The senior point guard has been a huge difference maker after missing the Rams’ first six games. Since returning to the lineup Patterson has helped Rio Rancho High (9-3) win six out of their last seven games, including a current six-game winning streak. Patterson scored 20 points against Manzano on Dec. 20th, then dropped 18 points and seven assists against Randall (Amarillo, TX) and 28 points against 5A Grants. However, his big game came against Hope Christian (Albuquerque, NM) in the championship as he poured in 30 points against the Huskies. Patterson was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

6A Team of the Week:

Rio Rancho High, 9-3 overall

The Rams are currently on a six-game winning streak and are showing no signs of slowing down since Brady Patterson’s return to the lineup. Their current win streak is highlighted by winning their own Holiday Hoops Classic over the winter break. After tallying wins against Randall (Amarillo, TX) and 5A Grants in the first two rounds of the tournament, the Rams defeated a very good 4A Hope Christian (Albuquerque, NM) team in the championship game. Senior Brady Patterson was instrumental in all of the wins (as seen above), but Zach Garretson also deserves some praise with his 17-point performance against Hope Christian. Garretson also scored 25 points against Randall and 18 points against Grants.

5A Player of the Week:
Cesar Molina (Centennial (Las Cruces, NM)), junior point guard

The junior point guard was instrumental in helping Centennial knock off the top two 6A teams to win the Hobbs Holiday Classic. Molina dropped a team-high 20 points against Hobbs in the finals. He scored 12 points against Hirschi and 15 points against Cleveland (Rio Rancho, NM) in the first two rounds. Following the tournament, the Hawks (11-2) defeated Clovis and Artesia. Molina scored 18 and 29 points in those games, respectively.

5A Team of the Week:

Centennial (Las Cruces), 11-2 overall; and St. Pius X (Albuquerque, NM), 6-1 overall

Centennial came away with a one-point win over 6A Hobbs in the Hobbs Holiday Classic championship game, giving the Eagles their first loss of the season. James Mulheron (15 points) hit the game-winning three pointer to lift Centennial to the win. This comes after upsetting top ranked 6A team, Cleveland (Rio Rancho, NM), in the semifinals. Over the past two weeks they also tallied wins against Hirschi (Wichita Falls, TX), 6A Clovis, and Artesia. They did lose a rematch to Roswell on Dec. 20th, but the Storm are certainly one of the best teams in the state regardless of classification. Cesar Molina played terrific during this stretch as mentioned above, but 6-5 Joe Saterfield and 6-3 Omar Baez have also played well. Saterfield had 12 points against Artesia, 10 points against Clovis, 17 points against Hirschi, 14 points against Cleveland, and 10 points against Hobbs. Baez scored 15 points against Artesia, 12 points against Clovis, and 15 points against Hirschi.

St. Pius won the Stu Clark tournament at Las Vegas, NM. The Sartans knocked off a very good 4A West Las Vegas team in the championship game behind a combined 24 points from Brennan Myers and Nathan Peterson. St. Pius also defeated Capital (Santa Fe, NM) and 4A Robertson (Las Vegas, NM) in the first two rounds. Brennan Myers and Nathan Petersen evenly combined for 24 points in the championship game against DJ Bustos and WLV.

4A Player of the Week:[/B]
DJ Bustos (West Las Vegas), sophomore guard

He wins this award even after struggling for most of the Stu Clark tournament. He lifted the Dons to wins over Clayton, 5A Aztec, 5A Bernalillo, and 5A Miyamura (Gallup, NM). Bustos scored 16 points against Bernalillo, 15 points against St. Pius, and 22 points against Miyamura. The sophomore guard has been a key part of the Dons' 10-1 start to the 2014-15 season. Hope Christian's Ben Kocurak and Dedrick Milford deserve some honorable mention recognition for their performances this past week.

4A Team of the Week:[/B]
Hope Christian (Albuquerque, NM), 7-2 overall

Yes, the Huskies lost in the championship game of the Rio Rancho High's Holiday Hoops Classic to the host, but Hope managed to snag wins against 6A Las Cruces High and 6A La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM) in the first two rounds. They also have recent wins against 6A Albuquerque schools West Mesa (Dec. 13th) and Sandia (Dec. 20th). Ben Kocurak scored 22 points in the La Cueva win, where La Cueva senior post Aaron Overacker picked up two late technical fouls and was ejected. Overacker then punched the glass portion of a door on his way out, which caused the glass to shatter and left the disgruntled senior with a bloody gash. Dedrick Milford scored a team-high 21 points in the championship game against Rio Rancho high.

1A-3A Player of the Week:[/B]
D'Ontee Sandoval (Tucumcari), 3A, senior guard/John Paul Garcia Tucumcari

John Paul Garcia has been playing out of this world this year and was the Citizens bank MVP scoring 30 points against Texico. Sandoval helped Tucumcari win the Texico tournament over the winter break. The Rattlers had wins against Muleshoe (Texas), Farwell (Texas), and Texico to lift the tournament trophy. D'Ontee Sandoval scored 18 points in the opening game against Muleshoe, then followed up with an 11-point performance in the semifinals against Farwell.

1A-3A Team of the Week:
[/B]Magdalena, 2A, 10-0 overall

Magdalena won the SEBI Invitational at The Pit to remain undefeated. The Steers defeated Ramah, NAAC (Albuquerque, NM), and Red Mesa (Arizona) to win the tournament and improve to 10-0 on the season. Next up for Magdalena is 4A Socorro on Tuesday.
