6A BoysTop-ranked Cleveland (Rio Rancho, NM) was upset by 5A Centennial (Las Cruces, NM) in the semifinals of the Hobbs' Holiday Classic. The Storm (10-1) defeated Moore (Oklahoma) in the opening round and dismantled El Paso High (Texas) for third place.


No. 2 Hobbs (12-1) lost a close game to 5A Centennial in the championship game of their own tournament. Hobbs opened the tournament with a win over Odessa High (Texas) and a semifinal victory over El Paso High (Texas). Following their championship game loss, the Eagles scored 92 points and defeated 5A Goddard (Roswell, NM).


No. 3 Albuquerque High (8-0) has not played a game since Dec. 19th. The Bulldogs' next game isn't until Dec. 13th when they face Manzano. They should be able to get by Manzano fairly easily, but will go nearly four weeks without playing a game.


No. 4 West Mesa (Albuquerque, NM) had a close scare with 4A Kirkland Central on Dec. 29th in the Duke City Challenge. The Mustangs improve to 7-1 on the season, and next face Manzano on Tuesday in the APS Metro Tournament.


No. 5 Carlsbad (8-2) came away with a 21-point over Valley (Albuquerque, NM) on Dec. 29th in the Duke City Challenge. The Cavemen lost the next day to Andress (El Paso, TX), their second loss during the 2014-15 season.


No. 6 Rio Rancho High extended their winning steak to six games after winning their own tournament. The Rams had wins against Randall (Amarillo, TX), 5A Grants, and 4A Hope Christian to improve to 9-3 on the season. Brady Patterson has been instrumental during the Rams' successful run over the past few weeks.


No. 7 Volcano Vista (Albuquerque, NM) came away three wins from the Big 12 Classic in Clovis to improve to 7-2 on the season. The Hawks beat 5A Lovington, Clayton, and the host Clovis.

No. 8 Gadsden (10-4) did not play over the past two weeks, and will next face Hobbs in a rematch of the Capital City tournament championship game.

No. 9 Atrisco Heritage Academy (Albuquerque, NM) last played on Dec. 20th, when they lost to Cibola (Albuquerque, NM). Next up is Eldorado (Albuquerque, NM) on Dec. 13th.

No. 10 Cibola (Albuquerque, NM) had a difficult winter break, losing their first two games of the Hobbs Holiday Classic to El Paso High (Texas) and Odessa High (Texas). The Cougars bounced back with a win over Hirschi (Wichita Falls, TX) in the seventh place game.



5A BoysTop-ranked Roswell High (10-1) won the Poe Corn Invitational heading into the New Year. The Coyotes easily handled Moriarty and Piedra Vista (Farmington, NM) to face Farmington High in the championship game. Roswell High beat Farmington High, 65-58, to extend their winning streak to five games.


No. 2 Centennial (Las Cruces, NM) impressed over the winter break, as they earned wins over 6A powerhouses Cleveland (Rio Rancho, NM) and Hobbs to win the Hobbs Holiday Classic. Cesar Molina was outstanding for Centennial (11-2).

No. 3 St. Pius X (Albuquerque, NM) won the Stu Clark tournament to improve to 6-1 on the season. The Sartans used a team effort to defeat top ranked 4A team, West Las Vegas, for the tournament crown. St. Pius beat Capital (Santa Fe, NM) and 4A Robertson (Las Vegas, NM) in the first two rounds.

No. 4 Gallup (11-1) continues to pile up wins since losing their season opener to Espanola Valley. The Bengals have won 11 straight games to put themselves in the mix for top team in 5A. Over the break, they earned wins against Bernalillo and 4A Kirkland Central.





No. 5 Grants (9-3) opened the Rio Rancho High Holiday Hoops Classic with a win over 6A Mayfield (Las Cruces, NM). However, the Pirates lost to Rio Rancho High and La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM) to close out of the tournament. 6-5 junior Richie Lucero has been huge for Grants as they continue to surprise many people this season.

No. 6 Espanola Valley (11-4) lost to 6A La Cueva in the opening round of the Rio Rancho High tournament. The Sundevils then fell to 6A Las Cruces High in the consolation semifinal. Espanola did manage to beat 6A Mayfield in the seventh place game.

No. 7 Farmington High (10-3) continued their stellar play at the Poe Corn Invitational over the break. The Scorpions lost to Roswell High in the championship game, but proved to be a force to be reckoned with in 5A this year. The beat Belen and Goddard in the tournament's first two rounds. Max Pinon has the been the consistent scoring threat for the Scorpions.



No. 8 Del Norte (Albuquerque, NM) improved to 5-3 on the season after defeating 4A Kirkland Central in the Duke City Challenge, 68-61.


No. 9 Goddard (Roswell, NM) opened the Poe Corn Invitational with an easy win over Los Alamos, despite not having their top player in Trent Johnson. The Rockets (7-8) then lost to Farmington High and Piedra Vista to close out the tournament. On Jan. 3rd, 6A Hobbs easily defeated Goddard.

No. 10 Piedra Vista (Farmington, NM) came away from the Poe Corn Invitational with wins over Artesia and Goddard, but fell to Roswell High in the tournament's semifinal. The Panthers are now 7-6 on the season.


4A Boys
No. 1 Hope Christian (Albuquerque, NM) lost to Rio Rancho High in the Holiday Hoops Classic's championship game. The Huskies did beat 6A schools Las Cruces High and La Cueva to keep strengthening their tournament resume.

No. 2 West Las Vegas (10-1) lost to 5A St. Pius X in the championship game of the Stu Clark tournament in front of 1,000 fans jammed into Highland University's gym. The Dons did have wins against 3A Clayton, 5A Aztec, 5A Bernalillo, and 5A Miyamura (Gallup, NM) over the past two weeks. Sophomore DJ Bustos is one of the premier players in the state, regardless of class.


No. 3 Thoreau (9-3) has not played since their loss to Taos on Dec. 20th.


No. 4 Taos (6-5) lost a low-scoring contest to 5A Capital, but bounced back to beat 5A Los Alamos on Saturday.



No. 5 Pojoaque Valley (9-4) beat Wingate in their only matchup over the winter break.

No. 6 St. Michael's (Santa Fe, NM) began the break with a win over 5A Capital. The Horsemen lost their first game of the Clovis Holiday Classic to Clayton, but bounced back to beat 6A Clovis and a rematch with Clayton. On Jan. 3rd, the Horsemen lost a close 54-51 game to 5A Albuquerque Academy.



No. 7 Bloomfield (7-2) have not played since their Dec. 20th win over Shiprock Northwest.

No. 8 Zuni (7-2) was at the Striking Eagle Tournament, and we are awaiting their results.


No. 9 Socorro (5-3) only had Robertson scheduled during the break. We are awaiting their results.

No. 10 Hatch Valley (7-5) lost to Cloudcroft on Jan. 3rd.




3A Boys
No. 1 Mesilla Valley Christian (Las Cruces, NM) improved to 7-2 after beating Cathedral (El Paso, TX) in the Duke City Sun City Challenge. MVC also defeated Tornillo (Texas).

No. 2 Laguna-Acoma (9-3) went 2-3 over the break, but faced stiff competition as they competed at a tournament in Palm Spring, California. Laguna's only tournament win came against Yucca Valley (California). They also beat Crowpoint on Dec. 20th prior to the tournament.

No. 3 Clayton (7-4) faced some strong competition over the break. They lost to 4A West Las Vegas on Dec. 23rd, but fell to 6A Volcano Vista (Albuquerque, NM) and 4A St. Michael's (Santa Fe, NM) at the Clovis tournament. The Yellowjackets also defeated Texline (Texas) on Jan. 2nd.


No. 4 Santa Fe Prep (8-4) defeated Tularosa behind Francis Castillo y Mulert's game-high 15 points.



No. 5 Tucumcari (11-3) recently lost to Bosque (Albuquerque, NM), but won the Texico tournament with wins over Muleshoe (Texas), Farwell (Texas), and host Texico.



2A BoysNo. 1 Magdalena (10-0) remained undefeated by beating Ramah, NAAC (Albuquerque, NM), and Red Mesa (Arizona) in the SEBI Invitational at The Pit.



No. 2 Questa (8-3) beat McCurdy (Espanola, NM) in the opening round of the NRG tournament, but fell to Pecos and Dulce in their final two games.

No. 3 Escalante (8-1) went 6-1 over the past two weeks with wins over Cuba, Pecos (twice), East Mountain, Mesa Vista, and Dulce. Their only loss came to Mora in the Tri-City Tournament semifinals.


No. 4 Logan (7-2) played Coronado and Santa Rosa this past week. We are awaiting those results.


No. 5 Pine Hill (4-2) lost to Alamo Navajo (Magdalena, NM) on Dec. 30th.



1A BoysNo. 1 Cliff (9-0) defeated Cobre (Bayard, NM) on Jan. 3rd to remain perfect on the season.


No. 2 Hondo Valley (9-0) last played on Dec. 20th against Carrizozo. Next up is the Smokey Bear Classic.


No. 3 San Jon (8-1) last played on Dec. 19th against Channing (Texas). They face Dora this coming Tuesday.


No. 4 Springer (5-2) last played against Desert Academy (Santa Fe, NM) on Dec. 17th. Next up is Mora on Jan. 10th.


No. 5 Quemado (9-2) last played against Grady/House on Dec. 20th. Next up is the Quemado Shootout starting on Jan. 8th.
