Hobbs High posts the daily numbers of students attending class on it's website. As of today, that number is 2,875 which will probably assure that Hobbs will remain the largest school in the state with the high possibility that number will increase as students are still checking in or moving in. Of concern is that the next 4 class block (5th-8th grades) averages about 850 kids per class or a potential total of over 3,400 students for Hobbs High in the future with a zero percent planned increase of those 5th-8th classes. Granted they have almost completed a bunch of new class rooms at Hobbs High and will build a 40-50 million dollar trade tech center on campus that will help with the increases. Of interest, surrounding energy producing cities like Carlsbad and Lovington are basically flat in high school class enrollment increases. The reason for the difference is that Hobbs has been working very hard on five new subdivisions making room for families moving in where about 200 new homes have already been built and the land has been cleared for an additional announced 1200 new homes not including newly announced apartment buildings or many additional mobile homes. The city pays each builder $10,000 to build each home to entice and push construction. They just awarded the money for 40 more new homes this week. The bottom line to all of this is that I just do not see any way that another high school being built can be avoided despite the fact that the city and community is determined to prevent that.
