Great and crazy day of high school baseball today! Let’s see what tomorrow brings….
You would have to change the format quite a bit. Cut the field to 8 teams, probably, and extend the tournament a week. Another option would be to go to a club-style double elimination tournament over 3-4 days, or maybe two weekends.
Play the first round Monday (DH), Tuesday (If Nec.), then QF Friday (1 game) Sat (DH), semifinals the following Friday-Sat, State Championship Fri-Sat third week. Extend a week or into late May. I think they should have the baseball season go longer into May with graduations and weather in March-April…
Interesting idea. The possibility of six games in six games (the first two rounds) would be tough on pitching.
You could have the round of 16 be four regionals or pods, each with four teams, like they do in the first round of the college baseball playoffs. Double elimination, one team advances from each pod. Next weekend, do it again. The problem would be that each pod would take 3 days, and bad weather could really derail the whole tournament.
Or do the pod thing the first weekend, then best of three for the semis the next weekend, then best of three for the finals the next weekend.
I actually don’t mind the current system because three games in three days is a good test of who has the best overall team. The downside is that the state title games tend to be contested by teams’ third and fourth best pitchers.
Biggest upset of the weekend: no. 14 Cibola over no. 3 Carlsbad.
Yes. Even play baseball into June. I know school is out but going to games the Covid year was nice in June.
