Rio Rancho
DISTRICT 1-5A
No. 2 Volcano Vista 5-0 overall, 3-0 district
Cleveland 4-1 overall, 2-1 district
No. 12 Cibola 2-2 overall, 2-2 district
Rio Rancho 3-3 overall, 1-2 district
Atrisco Heritage Academy 0-4 overall, 0-3 district

Lock (as of today): Volcano Vista
Work Left To Do: Cibola, Rio Rancho, Cleveland
Out: Atrisco Heritage

Overview: Volcano Vista (No. 2 NMPreps 5A Rankings) and Cibola (No. 12) are the only two teams from the district in the Top-12 Power Rankings for this week. What does that mean? Well, this could be in jeopardy of being a 1-bid league. Cleveland, ranked #19 in the New Mexico Top-20, helps and has a criteria win over Espanola Valley that could become helpful.

4/9/2021 Update: Cleveland beat Cibola at home on Friday night to move into the runner-up slot. Volcano Vista also thumped Rio Rancho to stay at the top.

DISTRICT 2-5A
No. 6 La Cueva 3-0 overall, 3-0 district
No. 8 Eldorado 2-1 overall, 2-1 district
No. 3 Farmington 4-1 overall, 2-1 district
No. 5 Sandia 2-2 overall, 2-2 district
No. 10 Piedra Vista 3-3 overall, 1-3 district
West Mesa 0-3 overall, 0-3 district

Lock (as of today): La Cueva
Work Left To Do: Eldorado, Farmington, Piedra Vista, Sandia
Out: West Mesa

Overview: What a district in girl's basketball! West Mesa appears to be going through a rebuild this season but the other five should all be playoff teams in a normal state tournament field of 16. Also, they could all win an opening-round game if the field was 16, so that's the difficult part. Eldorado might be the dark horse this season and the win over Farmington was impressive. I'll say two-bid league but should be three at the very least. Also, as you see the rankings are going to shift drastically this week. The tough part with it all is Farmington beat Sandia, Sandia beat Eldorado, Eldorado beat Farmington. We have a three-team tango for a bid.

4/9/2021 Update: Sandia beat Piedra Vista on Friday night after publishing, the record has been updated.

DISTRICT 3-5A
No. 4 Centennial 3-0 overall, 3-0 district
Onate 3-0 overall, 3-0 district
No. 9 Mayfield 2-1 overall, 2-1 district
Las Cruces 2-1 overall, 2-1 district
Alamogordo 1-3 overall, 1-3 district
Deming 1-3 overall, 1-3 district
Gadsden 0-4 overall, 0-4 district

Lock (as of today): Centennial
Work Left To Do: Onate, Mayfield
Out: Las Cruces, Alamogordo, Deming, Gadsden

Overview: Onate jumped out to a 3-0 start to Las Cruces, Gadsden, and Alamogordo. They await dates with Centennial (Sat) and Mayfield to maintain their position for a possible tournament bid. Centennial is darn good and has the edge with the win over Mayfield for the auto at this point. In all reality, a two-bid league is what it should be but has the chance of being a 1-bid.

DISTRICT 4-5A
No. 1 Hobbs 2-0 overall, 0-0 district
Carlsbad 2-0 overall, 0-0 district
Roswell 2-0 overall, 0-0 district
Clovis 3-1 overall, 0-0 district

Lock: Hobbs
Work Left To Do: Carlsbad
Out: Clovis, Roswell

Overview: This will be a 1-bid league and we all know that Hobbs is going undefeated. Carlsbad is the next best and they are outside the Top-12 leading into week three. Roswell and Clovis would need a lot. I will say Roswell did smack Lovington and they look improved Yes, Clovis is 3-1 and the win over Goddard was quality but seeing them against Valencia, I just don't see them getting the bid from this district.

DISTRICT 5-5A
Albuquerque 3-0 overall, 3-0 district
No. 7 Los Lunas 4-1 overall, 4-0 district
Capital 1-3 overall, 1-2 district
Santa Fe 0-2 overall, 0-1 district
Manzano 0-2 overall, 0-2 district
Rio Grande 0-3 overall, 0-3 district

Lock: Los Lunas
Work Left To Do: Albuquerque
Out: Capital, Santa Fe, Manzano, Rio Grande

Overview: Perhaps the weakest district in 5A will be a one-bid league. No wonder why Los Lunas decided when they made the move up they wanted this league. They did get a taste of the 5A champ Hobbs earlier this season falling 55-32. Albuquerque is 3-0 but those wins are against Capital, Rio Grande and Manzano so don't carry a ton of weight when looking for a tournament bid.

HOW DOES THE PLAYOFF FIELD LOOK TODAY
6:45 am on Saturday, April 10th

1. Hobbs Eagles (auto)
2. Volcano Vista (auto)
3. Centennial (auto)
4. Los Lunas (auto)
5. La Cueva (auto)
6. Mayfield (at-large)
7. Eldorado (at-large)
8. Farmington (at-large)

Next Four (Work Left To Do)
Sandia
Carlsbad
Albuquerque
Cleveland

4/9/2021 Scoop: Sandia has that win over Eldorado but Eldorado beating Farmington helps propel them into the 7th slot. I truly feel it will be a two/three-bid league. Cibola can't afford a slip up against Rio Rancho or Cleveland and honestly, they shouldn't and they and Albuquerque High could enter the debate with only 2-losses. Cibola's both losses to Volcano Vista and Albuquerque's to Los Lunas; So one of these 10-2 teams could be left out and maybe both with their schedule of strength rating going to be an issue.

Next Four (Work Left To Do)
Cibola
Onate
Piedra Vista
Rio Rancho

Overview: Sandia better take care of business tonight against Piedra Vista or they could have their bubble popped. Onate would need to beat Mayfield out and then only fall to Centennial.
