NMPreps Week 4 Team Rankings: Key Movements, Trends, and Surprises

As we enter Week 4 of the 2024 New Mexico high school football season, the latest NMPreps rankings showcase significant movement among teams across the state. With results from Week 3 shaking up the standings, several teams made impressive leaps, while others saw their rankings slip after tough losses. Here's a closer look at the trends and the teams that made the biggest impact this past week.

Top 5: Stability Among the Elite

At the very top of the rankings, La Cueva continues to hold firm at No. 1. The Bears were idle last week before hitting a district stride. Centennial (3-0) remains hot on their heels at No. 2 after another strong win, 70-39 over 5A power Artesia, while Cleveland stays at No. 3 with a rebound win over Clovis, 54-0 in week three.

Volcano Vista jumps up one spot to No. 4, swapping places with Rio Rancho after a convincing 28-6 win over Sandia. Rounding out the top five is Las Cruces, who also climbed one spot to No. 5 following a big 34-21 victory over Rio Rancho.

Biggest Movers: The Climbers

Several teams saw substantial gains in the Week 4 rankings. Leading the charge is Taos in 4A, which soared 15 spots from No. 51 to No. 36 after a solid 30-16 victory over Highland. Another notable riser is Los Lunas in 6A, climbing three spots from No. 18 to No. 15 after a strong 37-28 win over Farmington. Lovington in 5A also continues their upward trend, moving from No. 10 to No. 9 after a thrilling 47-44 victory over Carlsbad.

In the lower classifications, Pojoaque Valley (3A) inched up from No. 55 to No. 51, thanks to their nail-biting 14-13 win over Los Alamos. Meanwhile, McCurdy made a small but meaningful leap from No. 76 to No. 73 with their 50-42 win over Tucumcari.

Falling Teams: Tough Losses Lead to Drops

On the other end of the spectrum, Clovis experienced the most significant drop, falling from No. 20 to No. 34 following a 54-0 blowout loss to Cleveland. Farmington also slid from No. 9 to No. 16 after their defeat at the hands of Los Lunas. Despite their early promise, Farmignton now face an uphill battle to regain momentum.

Santa Teresa had a challenging week as well, dropping from No. 40 to No. 66 after a surprising 26-7 loss to Chaparral. The season is still young, but their district schedule is brutal.

Unbeaten Teams: Making a Statement

Several teams across various classes remain unbeaten heading into Week 4, including Centennial, Roswell, Lovington, Deming, and Eunice. Roswell continues to assert dominance in 5A, holding steady at No. 7 after a thrilling 37-35 overtime win over Hobbs.

Among the smaller schools, Bloomfield (4A) is proving their worth, rising to No. 14 after a 55-0 demolition of Miyamura. Bernalillo also maintains its undefeated streak, moving up two spots to No. 27 after a comfortable 3-0 start.

Trend Watch: Teams to Keep an Eye On

Deming (No. 10) on the rise and continue to show consistency. Off to a 3-0 start and have the potential to shake up the top 10 as the season progresses.

In 2A, Legacy Academy and Newcomb are making waves, with Legacy moving up to No. 61 and Newcomb reaching No. 77. Both schools have started 3-0 and are poised to challenge for higher rankings in the coming weeks.

Looking Ahead: Week 4 Showdowns

Week 4 features some exciting matchups that could further shift the rankings. The game between Lovington and Roswell will have major implications for the 5A rankings as two undefeated teams go head-to-head.

As always, NMPreps will track every game and provide comprehensive coverage as the season unfolds. Be sure to check back for the latest updates and in-depth analysis as the race for the state championship heats up.
