2023 Recap

The Bernalillo Spartans, under head coach John Cobos, had a remarkable season in 2023. They started with an upset victory over Valley on opening night, went on a 6-game win streak, and secured a playoff win, finishing the season 8-4 overall.

Best Case Scenario: 7-3 overall, 6-1 in district

Bernalillo faces a challenging but manageable schedule. They aim to repeat their upset of Valley in the opener, which could set the tone for an 8-win season. Highland poses a threat with the #2 ranked RB in the state, so avoiding a potential 0-3 start will be key. The Spartans managed to win the ground game battle last season, beating Highland on the road 18-14. Other keys games on this coin flip heavy schedule are Grants, Espanola Valley, Taos, and Moriarty.

Worst Case Scenario: 2-8 overall, 2-5 in district

The 2024 season brings change, as the Spartans compete in a new district. Last season, they defeated some of their new district mates, including Taos (20-14), Espanola Valley (26-18), and Moriarty (14-7). Maintaining these wins will be crucial to avoid missing the playoffs. The new district offers some relief, as they no longer face Lovington (the 4A state champions), Portales (a current threat), and Albuquerque Academy (consistently tough).

Final Thoughts: Over/Under Wins 5.5

The Spartans won 7 regular season games last season, reaching 8 wins with their playoff victory. This season brings change, and although they had success in coin flip games and an upset last season, duplicating that success is difficult. That said, I've gone against the Spartans too many times to count, and Cobos (Spartans head coach John Cobos) has continually proven me wrong. This time, I'm drinking the kool-aid and taking the OVER.
