One win earns you a playoff at-large bid under the old district alignments. The Belen Eagles are winners of three games over the last two seasons but both earned them a playoff spot. The Eagles started the 2023 season 0-8 before getting a district win that would propel them into the playoff spot.
The Eagles opened the season with a 56-6 loss to rival Los Lunas, then fell 16-7 to Manzano and 51-0 to eventual state champion Artesia. The Eagles then dropped their remaining non-district games to Valley 33-7, Deming, Mayfield (22-20), and Goddard 57-7. The Deming game was a forfeit after the Belen Eagles suffered a strike, under the NMAA's new two-strike rule; Eagles players rushed the Vikings’ sideline, and multiple ejections were issued. The Eagles then fell 32-30 to Highland in the district opener then earned a road win over Miyamura 28-14, the lone win on the season, before falling to Piedra Vista 49-14 to end district.
The Eagles would eventually get a game with Deming, who was the 5-seed in the state playoffs, but fell to them in the first round of the state playoffs 40-3.
