Class 6A 1st Round Preview

1. Rio Rancho vs. 16. Alamogordo - May 6th - 7PM - At Rio Rancho
Preview: There was never any doubt that Rio Rancho would obtain the No. 1 seed after the Rams won 21 games under Ron Murphy, one of the best coaches in New Mexico. What was even more impressive is the fact that they won 7 games in a loaded district. Losing assistant coach Ray Chavez late in the year, has to provide a little extra motivation to get it done. Watch for Junior Standout Garrett Goldsmith who is batting .562 from the plate with 15 RBI’s and 12 doubles, Willie Baez who batting .476 with 22 RBIs, and for Chris Carr who is batting .461 with 15 RBIs. On the mound, Bohdi Bolen is 7-1 and Nick Martinez is 6-0. Alamogordo is 9-17 on the season under Head Coach Michael Crabtree with a 4-8 record in district. They have key wins on the year beating Centennial, Las Cruces, Cibola, and beat Clovis in two out of three games. Junior Alex Ramirez leads the way for the Tigers batting over .400 with 3 home runs on the year. The Pick: Rio Rancho in two games.

8. Sandia vs. 9. Las Cruces - May 6th - 4PM - At Sandia
Preview: Head Sandia Coach Jon Gunther is one of the best in New Mexico, several of our local coaches at the 6A level are among the state’s elite and it’s no surprise that Gunther has the Matadors rolling into the playoffs with a record of 17-7. Should the Matadors defeat Las Cruces in round one, they’ll present continued challenges for any team they meet in the playoffs and have proven to win the big game. Notable wins include beating: Cibola, Rio Grande, Academy, La Cueva, and in the final game of the regular season polished off Eldorado 10-0. Jimmy Gallegos has a batting average of .537 with 13 RBIs, Michael Davis is batting .471, Ricky Apodaca is batting .457, and on the mound Senior Pitcher Drew Gillespie who is committed to New Mexico is 4-1. For the Las Cruces Bulldawgs the District 3-6A Champ, they have won 16 games under Head Coach Gil Padilla and finished the month of April with a record of 9-3. With a good mix of seniors through sophomores Las Cruces has won plenty of notable games and has to enter the tournament with a chip on their shoulder considering they are a district champ and were placed on the road in round one. Sophomore Tristin Lively, Sophomore Payton Ball, and Freshmen Ivan Molina are young guns to know. Biggie Sifuentes, Sam Ellis, and Kameron Miller provide excellent senior leadership. This match up is going to be very competitive and exciting. The Pick: Sandia in three games

5. Cleveland vs. 12. Atrisco Heritage - May 6th - 6PM - At Cleveland
Preview: The Storm won 19 games during the regular season under Head Coach Shane Shallenberger, very high quality team that seems to be peeking at the right time winning 5 games in a row. Riley Peterson OF and Justiss Jackson 1B lead the way in terms of senior play and with the addition of Treston Shallenberger back from knee injury, you have to like Cleveland’s chances of making a strong run. Beating Volcano Vista, Cibola, and Rio Rancho to end the year could give us a preview of what’s to come in the next few days. District 5-6A fielded two teams into the playoffs and the Jaguars with a 15-9 record have a tough task of taking on Cleveland as they are 0-5 against 6A playoff teams this season. Keep an eye on Pitcher Luis Quintana for the Jaguars. The Pick: Cleveland in 2

4. La Cueva vs. 13. Mayfield - May 6th - 4PM - At La Cueva
Preview: The La Cueva Bears managed to turn it up at the right time of the season winning District 2-6A under Gerard Pineda going 10-2 in district. Outstanding, considering district foes Eldorado and Sandia are loaded. In-fact the Bears won their last 8 games of the regular season and have a very talented pitching trio. Anthony Robles, Devin Borin, and Jonathan Stroman have proved to be marquee additions to the rotation, add on players like Isaac Standrige OF, Jack Pineda IF, Stone Romero C, Derrick Gallegos IF, and Sophomore Ryan Johnson the Bears really have a roster build to endure a state title run. Notable wins come against Cibola, Carlsbad, Cleveland, Eldorado, and Sandia. The Trojans 13-12 on the year and 2nd in District 3-6A are a tough team to gauge. In the preseason looking at their roster, you had to like their chances of winning the district. Guys like Ethan Alvarado and Gabe Castillo provide solid veteran playoff experience. The Pick: La Cueva in 2

3. Rio Grande vs. 14. Deming - May 6th - 7PM - At Rio Grande
Preview: What a season the Rio Grande Ravens have put together under Head Coach Orlando Griego who has to be mentioned in the Coach of the Year debate. The Ravens went 7-1 in district play and have won their last 13 out of 15 games. While critics will rag on the fact that they played in District 5-6A, check out Rio Grande’s resume: They have wins over La Cueva, Eldorado, Cleveland, St. Pius X, Academy, and beat Atrisco Heritage twice. On the mound the Ravens are led by Sergio Alfaro who has won 7 games this season. The Deming Wildcats have again been a bit of a surprise in the 6A fold under Head Coach Fernando Holguin. Winning 15 games on the year is respectable considering Deming is not known as a yearly baseball power and the fact that they have one of the smaller enrollments in Class 6A. Names to know include: Isaiah Aguilera who is batting .421 from the plate, Sophomore Shane Mora who is batting .410, and Senior Standout Dante Urrea who is batting .371 with two game winning walk off home runs. The Pick: Rio Grande in 3

6. Volcano Vista vs. 11. Cibola - May 6th - 4PM - At Volcano Vista
Preview: With a 4-4 record in district and missing Tanner West due to an injury that will keep him from playing the first round, this match up between district rivals Volcano Vista and Cibola could go either way. The two teams have already met twice on the year, Cibola winning game one 8-4, Volcano Vista winning the second game 7-1. Volcano Vista Head Man Ken Andersh has built quite a Metro Area West Side Power and while West is out, this team isn’t built around one arm. Watch for Gabe Trujillo, Dillon Gassoway, and Jerrod Day to rise up in tournament time. Cibola is a dangerous 11 seed, everyone knows that for their pitching department is exceptional. With Jensen Lewis, Christian Peery, and Mikey Siederman ready to go, watch for a potential upset in round one. Cibola has beaten La Cueva, Atrisco, Alamogordo, Volcano Vista, and Carlsbad on the year. Three games very much expected in this one. The Pick: Cibola in 3

7. Eldorado vs. 10. Hobbs - May 6th - 4PM - At Eldorado
Preview: Such a rich history of high school baseball at Eldorado. For years and years the Eagles have thrived under Head Coach Jim Johns, no doubt of the best ever in New Mexico. Last year Eldorado sprung up around this team and went on to win the 6A State Championship Game, they again have the talent on all fronts to run the table again. 16-7-1 on the year and 9-3 in district, with Player of the Year Candidate and New Mexico Lobo Commit Nate Garley on the mound, few teams in New Mexico if any are better. Garley’s numbers include a .471 batting average with 25 RBI’s and 7 home runs, the most in Class 6A. He’s also 5-0 on the mound with more than 60 recorded strikeouts. Additional Eagles to watch include Zach Groves who is 5-0 and also batting .464 from the plate, Stephen Cantwell who is batting .412 and Matt Rozzell who is batting .375. The Hobbs Eagles coached by Marco Boyle enter as the 10 seed and are looking to again play spoiler in the tournament. During the 2015 season, the Eagles entered as the No. 9 seed and took down No. 8 Cleveland in two games, then went on to beat Onate in the Quarterfinals. This year’s group is very talented as well with Senior Devin Beard leading the way with a .351 batting average and 16 RBIs, David Ortega is batting .325, Isaiah Tovar is 7-3 on the mound, also watch for Senior Ty Marquez who has 32 K’s this year. Another great first round series expected. The Pick: Eldorado in 3

2. Carlsbad vs. 15. Gadsden - May 6th - 6PM - at Carlsbad
Preview: The Cavemen have not won the state baseball championship since the 2012 season and when you’re a Carlsbad Cavemen fan, that’s too long. A storied baseball program, the Cavemen enter the tournament with the No. 2 seed and a 20-6 record overall. When you glance at their schedule you notice they have wins against Las Cruces, Cleveland, Mayfield, La Cueva, and then went 10-2 in district play. Led by one of the most feared pitchers in the land Trevor Rogers a 6-foot-4 lefty that is 7-1 with 92 K’s on the year, they’re going to be tough to get past during the tournament. Josh Chavarria and Nate Arrington have also combined for 8 wins on the year and at the dish, the Cavemen can rake. Arrington who is just a sophomore is batting .472, Ryan Razo is batting .413, and Genarro Florez is right at .400. One thing that stands out is the fact that Carlsbad has not hit a home run all season long. The Panthers are 15-11 on the year and ended district play beating Deming and Onate. Hector Morales and Raymond Flores are seniors to know. The Pick: Carlsbad in 2

Continuation of the 6A preview will be posted asap.

Class 5A 1st Round Preview

1. Goddard vs. 16. Del Norte - May 6th - 4PM - At Goddard
Preview: What an outstanding season put together by the Goddard Rockets under Head Coach Alan Edmonson. With a current record of 23-3, the Rockets earned the No. 1 seed and with a loaded roster it’s tough to see this team being knocked out early on or at all for that matter. Heading the team is New Mexico State Commit Cal Villareal who is a Pitcher and Outfielder. Derek Farmer at C, Mitch Naylor IF/P, Andrew Shanor 1B, and Cameron Stevenon P/3B are additional notable names to know. The Rockets have currently won 9 in a row. Del Norte finished the year 11-13 and 9-3 in district play under Head Coach Ben White. Senior Alex Cordero is hitting .405 from the plate and is also the team’s top pitcher with a record of 5-3 on the year. The Pick: Goddard in 2

8. Academy vs. 9. Farmington - May 6th - 4PM - At Academy
Preview: The returning 5A State Champs enter the tournament with a record of 11-13-1 and while they are a sub .500 team, there is plenty of talent on this roster for the Chargers to still make a deep run. Senior Seth Jones is not only a power hitter, but also a notable name on the mound. The Charger’s top pitcher is Thomas Braybrooks out of the Class of 2017, Braybrooks was on the mound when the Chargers defeated Eldorado 6-1 earlier this year. Randall Gurule, Jake Wyly, and 8th grader Chase Weissenborn are additional key players. Drawing Farmington in round one is an earlier match up of a doubler header the two teams played in back in early April with Farmington winning both games 3-0 and 7-2. The Scorpions are hot entering the playoffs winning their last 4 out of 5 games. Watch for Taylor Nakai and Junior Ethan Secrest. The Pick: Academy in 3

5. Artesia vs. 12. Miyamura - May 6th - 6PM - At Artesia
Preview: The Bulldogs landed the No. 5 seed and enter the tournament with a record of 13-12. While just one game over .500, the Bulldogs have had a great year and have beat both the No. 1 seeds in Class 6A and in 5A on the year. Few if any other team can say that. Cody Fuentes is batting .415 with 17 RBIs on the year, Jharyss Granger is batting .368, and Tristan Bowden is at .333 on the year. Freshman JR Bustamonte is 5-2 on the year with two no hitters thrown on the year. The Patriots are a very dangerous team to host in round one. On the year they have beaten Valencia, Cobre, Los Lunas, and even beat Piedra Vista late in the year winning 2-1. Watch for Austin Evens IF, Nolan Menapeace OF, and Anthony Montoya 3B. The Pick: Artesia in 2

4. Piedra Vista vs. 13. Roswell - May 6th - 4PM - At Piedra Vista
Preview: Piedra Vista is among the top prep baseball factories in New Mexico and it’s no surprise that yet again they are district champs of 1-5A under Head Coach Mike McGaha. The Panthers are 17-9 and 6-2 on the year, but ended the season losing their last 2 out of 3 games. Cause for concern? Likely not the case and with a loaded roster and tough schedule, the Panthers should be able to get past Roswell in two. Watch for Fabian Magallans who has over 7 wins on the year, 3B Logan Klunder, IF Elijah Gamboa, and Catcher Andrew Caliendo who many have commented on the year is the best catcher in New Mexico. The Roswell Coyotes have lost their last 5 out of 7 games, falling to Artesia in their final two games of the season by a combined 17 runs to 0. Nick Palomino is batting .359 and Chris Carpenter is at .344 with 17 RBIs. Ty Jordan and Palomino have won a combined 7 games on the year. The Pick: Piedra Vista in 2

3. St. Pius X vs. 14. Santa Teresa - May 6th - 4PM - St. Pius X
Preview: The Sartans under Head Coach Marc Hilton are 16-8 on the season and are hot at the right time of year entering the playoffs riding a 7 game winning streak. The Sartans have a great resume this year beating Centennial, Piedra Vista, Moriarty, and finished finished 8-1 in district taking 2 out of 3 from Academy, who finished 2nd. Justin Lotz P and Miles Hilton P, Util. are the two seniors which anchor this team, Mitch Buffett P and Ryan McGaha are two underclassmen that have impressed in 2016. Drawing Santa Teresa in round one is a tough task. The Desert Warriors won 13 games this year and beat teams like Gadsden, Las Cruces, Deming, Belen, and Valencia all which are playoff teams this year. Brady Dunn and Angel Gonzalez are listed as their team captains, watch for Freshmen Braden Gluth who is a great young gun on the come up. The Pick: St. Pius X in 3

6. Aztec vs. 11. Valencia - May 6th - May 6th - 6PM - At Aztec
Preview: Not sure if many expected the Aztec Tigers to finish the regular season 18-7. Fantastic job by Head Coach Wes Leplatt in his first year, last year Aztec was 12-14. The Tigers are led by Kyle Duggins P, Jake Taylor P, Beau Crawford Util., and Steele Justis OF. If you’ve read the message boards lately, many are expecting Valencia to play the upset role this weekend, let’s see if Aztec’s strong seeded of 6th was accurate. The Jaguars at 14-12 this year are as battle tested as anyone and what really stands out is their 8-2 district record. Head Coach Carlos Carrasco continues to build a strong foundation and though they were seeded 11th, we all know they are better than their actually seed. Josue Ruiz has had an outstanding year hitting .403 with 20 RBIs also watch for Adolfo Iturralde a their top pitcher, he is 4-2 on the year. The Pick: Valencia in 3

7. Los Alamos vs. 10. Moriarty - May 6th - 4PM - At Los Alamos
Preview: Do not sleep on Los Alamos or Moriarty going into the tournament. Each team has a strength of the bullpen and Los Alamos winning 18 games on the year and going 11-1 in district has proven they can play with the best. Early in the season they split with Piedra Vista, they also beat Academy by 10, beat Hope Christian by 10, and flew past their district. Senior duo Connor Mang and Lane Saunders have combined for more than 12 wins on the year and more than 70 strikeouts. The Moriarty Pintos have actually beaten Los Alamos this year winning 3-0 during mid season and though the Pintos finished 3rd in district, they have a very good pitching staff. Antonio Mora and Elijah Tapia are two arms that can go the distance. Get your popcorn ready for this one. The Pick: Los Alamos in 3

2. Centennial vs. 15. Belen - May 6th - 7PM - At Centennial
Preview: Head Baseball Coach Rusty Evans has built Centennial into a top program quickly and going 20-6 on the year and 9-1 in a loaded district, he deserves some major kudos. The Hawks are riding a 7 game winning streak and have already defeated Belen twice on the year winning 3-2 and 16-9 in district play. The Hawks are powered by Pitcher Junior Pena who is 6-2 on the year with more than 56 K’s. Cedrick Reynaud is a all-state type catcher that has hit .447 from the plate with 33 RBIs. Also watch for Manny Cahora who is hitting .403 and Karl Koerper who has 18 RBI’s on the year. The Eagles are likely the most dangerous No. 15 seed in the playoffs this year with a record of 13-11 under Head Coach Steven Contreras. Everyone in 5A has respect for this bunch and they have some notable wins beating Farmington, Roswell, Aztec, and Santa Teresa. Watch for Sophomore Standout Thomas Wisneski and Carlos Espinoza another talented Class of 2018 IF. The Pick: Centennial in 2

Class 4A 1st Round Preview

1.Sandia Prep vs. 16. NMMI - May 6th - 5PM - At Sandia Prep
Preview: Sandia Prep is the biggest favorite regardless of Class to win the State Championship. Anyone who thinks different does not follow high school baseball. The Sundevils are 22-4 on the season, but 22-0 against New Mexico competition as their 4 season losses came during the Coach Bob National Invite. Loaded with talent, here are a few notable names that stand out: Junior Joe Martinez is batting .471 from the plate with 27 RBI’s and he’s the pitcher who threw a perfect game in last year’s state finals against Ruidoso. Daniel Stell is batting .439 with 24 RBI’s, Mike Snow is batting .425 with 21 RBI’s, Garrett Cleavall is batting .424 with 22 RBI’s, Beau Williams is batting .371 with 16 RBI’s, Harris McConnell is batting .353 with 22 RBI’s, and on the mound Williams and Stell lead the team with a combined 9 wins. The Colts are 9-17 this year under Head Coach Charles Ward and led by Junior Standout Michel Hinojos, an in-fielder who is batting .378 with 28 RBIs along with Junior Catcher Jake Guerrero who is batting .371 with 16 RBIs. The Pick: Sandia Prep

8. Ruidoso vs. 9. Silver - May 6th - 4PM - At Ruidoso
Preview: Over the last two seasons under Head Coach Gilbert Alvarado, the Warriors have won a total of 40 games, very impressive for a school that does not get a lot of prep baseball notoriety. The Warriors are 15-10 on the season and have a tough opening round taking on Silver. O.J Herrera is batting .474 with 24 RBIs, Senior Hayden Frierson is batting .471, Junior Kyler Woodul is batting .443 with 31 RBI’s, and Freshman Mason Taylor is 6-1 on the mound in 11 appearances. Silver is a prep baseball power year in and year out under Head Coach Claudie Thompson and have reeled off notable wins all year long against: Gadsden, Robertson, Miyamura, took Deming down to the wire twice, and went 9-3 in district. Stephen Laramore and Anthony Fierro provide senior leadership. Don’t sleep on the Colts. The Pick: Silver

5. Robertson vs. 12. St. Mikes - May 6th - 4PM - At Robertson
Preview: Really respect this Robertson squad heading into the tournament. This is one of the few teams on the season from Class 4A that took No. 1 seed Sandia Prep into extra innings back in March, losing to the Sundevils 13-5 in 8 innings. For the Cards, watch for Senior 1B Francisco Arguello is a 6-foot-1, 195 pound big bat and for Brandon Trujillo another senior that is a LHP and key outfielder. Surprisingly, Robertson and St. Michael’s, two former district rivals have not yet faced each other this season. The Horsemen are 11-15 this season under Head Coach Dave Vig and enter the tournament losing their last 5 out of 6 games. Granted the Horsemen play in a tough district along side Sandia Prep and Hope, the Horsemen lack quality wins on the season. Antonio Ulibarri, Tobias Roybal, and Isaac Chavez are names to know. The Pick: Robertson

4. Taos vs. 13. Hatch - May 6th - 6PM - At Taos
Preview: One of the better years in Taos Baseball landing a top 4 seed under Head Coach Miguel Quintana. The Tigers enter the playoffs with a 15-10 record and have won their last 5 out of 7 games including a late season split with a very good Robertson team. Watch for Brandon Garcia a RHP, Junior Miguel Quintana UTIL., and for Tyrone Green a Junior first basemen. The Tigers are 13-12 under Head Coach AJ Cisco and a tough round one draw as they should be battle tested from playing along side Cobre and Silver. Watch for Super Sophomore James Gimler who is batting .487 with 35 RBI’s on the season and for three year starter Adrian Grajeda who is batting .365 with 23 RBIs. This is a very good match up, much more even than the two teams seedings. The Pick: Hatch Valley

3. Hope vs. 14. Pojoaque - May 6th - 3:30PM - At Hope
Preview: The Hope Christian Huskies are 17-8 on the season and have the talent to reach the title game, maybe with Senior Standout Joe Standley on the mound they have a shot to win it all. Standley is putting up some player of the year numbers hitting .667 from the plate with 38 RBIs and 11 home runs. On the mound he is 4-2 with 86 strikeouts and committed to New Mexico State. Sophomore Aiden McNichol is hitting .393 and Sophomore Evan Torres is batting .368 from the plate, Senior Ryan Villegas has 7 home runs. The Elks are 11-15 on the year under Head Coach Terry Burks. Watch for Junior Dominic Roybal who is batting over .350 on the season along with Senior Pitcher Isaac Estevan. The Pick: Hope Christian

6. Cobre vs. 11. Shiprock - May 6th - 6PM - At Cobre
Preview: Under Head coach Artie Sanchez the Cobre Indians are in the mix of the baseball post season again with a record of 16-9 and 11-1 in district. The Indians have played great down the stretch and are led by some veteran players such as Robert Rodriguez a senior that is batting .467 from the plate with 23 RBIs and Andru Sanchez a junior who is hitting .352 with 12 RBIs and 5 triples. James Ramos and Chris Dominguez have won a combined 9 games on the year. Shiprock won 20 games this year, quite the impressive feat and finished third in district behind Bloomfield and Kirtland with a 7-3 district record. Watch for Senior Standout Arjay Miller who is batting .571 from the plate with 5 home runs and also watch for Senior Cameron Phillips who is batting .591 with 30 RBIs. The Pick: Cobre

7. Bloomfield vs. 10. Kirkland - May 6th - 6PM - At Bloomfield
Preview: Bloomfield and Kirkland Central have already played each other 3 times on the year with Bloomfield winning two out of the three games. They actually finished the season with a double header, Bloomfield winning 5-2 and Kirtland winning the second game 4-2. The Bobcats are 16-10 and led by 6 seniors, including Chauncy White, Corbin Nelson, and Kenyon Lusk. The Kirtland Central Broncos are 16-10 this season, names to know include: Keishaun Aspass who is batting .442, Zach Van Duren who has a batting average of .354 with 24 RBIs. Cochise Sorrellhorse who is just a freshmen is 4-2 on the year. The Pick: Bloomfield

2. Portales vs. 15. West LV - May 6th - 5:30PM - At Portales
Preview: The Rams are riding one of the state’s longest winning streaks, winning their last 16 games in a row. Head Coach Dustin Nusser who has to be mentioned for the Coach of the Year Award has his rams 19-6 as they get ready to take on West Las Vegas. Emilo Lovato is batting .462 with 34 RBIs and 2 home runs, Alex Galvan his batting over .400 as well with 21 RBIs and on the mound Grant Wagner and Lovato have won a combined 10 games. The West Las Vegas Dons are 14-12 on the year under Coach Shannon Aragon and actually played Portales close losing 3-1 back on April 12th. Watch for Brian Gonzales who is hitting .484 from the plate along with Junior Jeremy Fernandez who is batting .462 with 17 RBIs. Gonzales is also 4-3 on the mound. The Pick: Portales

Class 3A 1st Round Preview

1.Texico vs. 16. Tohatchi - May 4th - 6PM - At Texico
Preview: The Texico Wolverines are the strong favorite not only in this match up against No. 16 Tohatchi, but to win the entire tournament. Led by Head Coach Ty Thatcher, the Wolverines are 21-4 on the season and led by Tanner Dickerman a Senior RHP, Dalton Thatcher a freshmen standout, and Sophomore Nathan Phipps a 6-foot-4, 235 pound In-fielder. The Tohatchi Cougars are 7-18 on the season. The Pick: Texico

8. Mesilla vs. 9. Eunice - May 4th - 4PM - At Mesilla
Preview: Eunice taking on Mesilla Valley is intriguing as we’re not sure which team will show up from either side. Eunice a continued baseball power is just 7-15 this year under Drew Reynolds, Mesilla Valley has been up and down all season long and enter the first round losing three in a row by a combined score of 28-5. For Eunice watch for Senior Bryce Jenkins who is batting .274 with 16 RBI’s on the season along with Freshman Logan Gaskins who has a notable season. For Mesilla Valley Zach Casillo is bating .480 with 19 RBI’s and Freshmen Josh Castillo is 4-2 on the mound. The Pick: Mesilla Valley

5. Laguna vs. 12. Santa Rosa - May 4th - 3:30PM At Laguna Acoma
Preview: Santa Rosa enters this first round match up against Laguna Acoma riding a 5 game winning streak. With just two seniors on their roster, the Lions have seemed to get better and better down the stretch making them a potential sleeper team in the 3A Bracket. The Laguna Acoma Hawks have put together their best season in school history going 17-2 and have to be eager to make a statement in the first round. Now a great opportunity to prove to the state just how good their team is. The Hawks have 8 seniors on the roster. The Pick: Santa Rosa

4. Estancia vs. 13. Navajo Prep - May 4th - 4PM - At Estancia
Preview: The Estancia Bears are 16-4 and 5-1 in district play on the season and are a team that can put runs on the board. In their last 5 games the Bears have scored 66 runs. Freshmen Drayton Oberg has hit .500 on the year with 23 RBI’s, Adam Lujan is batting .473 with 15 RBI’s, and Senior Pitcher Earl Ayers is 3-0 on the mound. The Navajo Prep Eagles are 9-9-1 on the year, players to watch include: Tyler Pete a sophomore who is batting .667 and Sophomore Trevor Smith who is 3-0 on the season. The Pick: Estancia

3. Lordsburg vs. 14. Clayton - May 4th - 4PM - At Lordsburg
Preview: Lordsburg is capable of winning the whole thing. Not sure why they have not been as dominate on the year as they were expected to be, but whatever the case they have won their last 4 out of 5 games and powered by Junior Johnny Plowman who is batting .480 on the season with 12 RBIs and one home run. Plowman is also 5-0 on the mound and also watch for Jacob Esquivel who is 4-2 in 8 appearances. The Yellowjackets have a more than 564 mile one-way drive for a one-game series. Yikes, if you’re a parent asking for off on Wednesday. The Yellowjackets have 9 seniors on their roster. The Pick: Lordsburg

6. Pecos vs. 11. Raton - May 4th - 4:30PM - At Pecos
Preview: Very curious about this match up as it’s two Northern New Mexico Teams that played once on the year back in April, with Raton winning 13-11. Pecos has become a yearly staple in the playoffs under Head Coach Augustin Ruiz and the Panthers enter the tournament at 14-10 and 5-1 in district. The Raton Tigers are just 7-15 and started the year 0-13 before winning their last 7 out of 9 games. The Pick: Pecos

7. Tularosa vs. 10. Capitan - May 4th - 5PM - At Tularosa
Preview: Remember way back in March when Capitan was 5-0? What happened since? The Tigers have lost their last 12 out of 13 games to end their season. Leading Capitan is Sophomore Ethan Dunn who is batting .357 from the plate with 9 RBIs. The Tiger’s key pitcher is Price Bowen who is 4-3 in 9 appearances. The Tularosa Wildcats are 9-11 this year and 6-3 in district. Recently the Wildcats ended the year on a high note taking two from Mesilla Valley, thus earning the No. 7 seed. Sophomore Toby Carillo is batting .383 on the year with 11 RBI’s and Senior Robert Silva is 4-2 in 10 appearances. The Pick: Tularosa

2. Dexter vs. 15. Loving - May 4th - 6PM - At Dexter
Preview: The Demons are 18-7 on the year and having played No. 1 Texico close in 2 out of 3 games beating the Wolverines once. Very tough team with a lot of talent, Senior Dominic Lomeilo is a 3 year starter. The Loving Falcons won just 3 games this year under Head Coach Alfredo Chacon, one of those games is against Dexter who they beat 3-2 back on April 19th. Senior Freddy Chacon is batting .391 from the page with 4 RBIs. The Pick: Dexter

Continuation of the First Round Previews will be posted soon along with 6A through 5A.
