New Mexico High School Football Team Rankings #1-#92

NMPreps 2023 preseason rankings of all 92 teams that play 11-man football in New Mexico. #nmpreps

26. Deming Wildcats

(5A): The Deming Wildcats had a successful season in 2022, finishing 8-5 overall (3-0 district) and beating Goddard 28-13 in the 2023 New Mexico high school football state playoffs. This was an improvement from their 5-win season in 2021. This year, the Wildcats will have a new head coach, Richard Perales, who previously served as an assistant. Junior quarterback Ryan Alfaro returns for his junior season, after leading the offense in 2022. Alfaro passed for 741 yards and 5 touchdowns, while also rushing for 890 yards and 15 touchdowns. Ezra Hensely (2025), a 6-foot-3 offensive lineman with plenty of experience, will protect Alfaro. On defense, the Wildcats will need to make some adjustments, but outside linebacker Isaiah Pizarro (2025) is a player to watch. He played a significant role in the team's success last season and continued to develop his talents. In conclusion, the Deming Wildcats will go through some changes with a new head coach and the loss of All-State players. However, they have quality players that will keep them in the top-five of 5A football in 2023.

27. Bloomfield Bobcats

(4A): The Bloomfield Bobcats have become a 4A powerhouse under the leadership of Mike Kovacs. Their high-powered offense, which averaged 42.5 points per game in 2022, helped them win the 4A state championship with a 12-1 overall record. However, the team will have to face the challenge of playing without quarterback Ryan Sharpe, who graduated in 2023 after passing for 2,541 yards and 30 touchdowns last season. Fortunately, the Bobcats have a talented group of players that can step up to fill the void. Drew Perez, Jesse Seitzinger, and George Rascon Jr. are the sparks of the offense. In 2022, they combined for over 2,000 yards receiving and 29 receiving touchdowns. Perez had 1,102 yards and 17 touchdowns, Seitzinger had 592 yards and 8 touchdowns, and Rascon Jr. had 535 yards and 4 touchdowns. Seitzinger also had 708 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns for the Bobcats. Although there are questions about who will replace Sharpe at quarterback, Blake Spencer could be the solution. As a backup, Spencer threw for 674 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2022. On the defensive side of the ball, Seitzinger, J Gutierrez, and McKell Colbert lead a talented group that allowed only 11 points per game in 2022, including 7 points in the state championship game against Silver. In conclusion, the Bloomfield Bobcats lost some key players, including their quarterback, but they have plenty of talented players on both sides of the ball. This makes them a favorite to repeat as champions in 2023.

28. Portales Rams

(4A): The Portales Rams are primed to take a step forward this year after going 9-3 overall in '22. The Rams return a good core of players, including 2025 quarterback Paxton Culpepper. The quarterback threw for 2,290 yards with 27 passing touchdowns last season. Culpepper connected for 1,832 yards to his top three targets in '22 -- all three return this season with Zane Mayberry (2024), Tommy Lopez (2025), and Andru Ontiveros (2024). This offense could become one of the most explosive units in 4A football this season. Manny Chavez (2025), Devin Diaz (2024), and Nehemiah Yorfee (2024) will guide a very experienced and talented defense for the Rams this season. Chavez led the way with 137 total tackles last season and is consider one of the top MLB in the class. Portales has plenty to like on both sides of the ball this season and easily could have been the top choice.

29. Lovington Wildcats

(4A): The Wildcats finished the 2022 season with a 5-7 overall (3-0 district) record and winners of a state playoff game. It's a close call between Lovington and Portales for the district championship, the Wildcats went 2-0 last season against Portales. Replacing Ashton Aranda from last season will prove to be a huge task. Aranda passed for 1,943 yards and 19 passing touchdowns. He would also add 760 rushing yards and 13 rushing TDs. Three offensive players looking to make a huge impact this fall -- Ondalis Cardenas (2025)/RB), Cesar Gonzalez (2024/WR), and Alec Holguin (2025/WR). Cardenas rushed for 612 yards as a sophomore in '22. Holguin led the team in receiving yards with 616 yards and 5 touchdowns. 2024 DE Demarcus Thompson is one of the top players returning in 4A football and will guide the defense for the Wildcats. Thompson finished with 7.5 sacks and 46 total tackles in '22. Joshua Carrasco (2024) led the team in total tackles last season with 70. The Wildcats are ready to make a run at the state championship in 2023.

30. Robertson Cardinals

(3A): Picking between Robertson, St. Michael's, and Ruidoso for the top spot in 3A football was a tough prediction. Consider it a complete toss up for the three top teams in the class with Robertson having a similar storyline being hit by graduation and the need to fills voids. One name to know entering the season is 2025 running back Jesse James Gonzalez who rushed for 768 yards and 8 touchdowns as a sophomore. Nathan Gonzalez (2025) and Mateo Contreras (2024) are two other players that will play big roles on offense for the Cardinals this Fall. Conner Ebell (2025) and Dmario Gallegos (2024) lead a talented defense returning for the Cardinals. Despite the loss of some key players the defense will have a healthy amount of experience to make a run at the state title.

31. St. Michael's Horsemen

(3A): The St. Michael's Horsemen fresh off back to back trips to the state championship game are looking to make another run at the final weekend in November. 20 victories over the last two seasons for the Horsemen and now the hurdle turns to the final game after falling to Ruidoso (2022) and Robertson (2021) in consecutive years. The Horsemen have plenty of positions to fill, on offense QB, RB, TE, and WR have all graduated. Three players that will move into bigger roles this season -- Lucas Gurule (2024), Reyes Baros (2024), and Cole Sandoval (2024). The 2022 team was talented and it could be a season to develop new players into new roles. The defense also looking to fill holes because of graduation. Mathias Duran (2024) is a name to become familiar with and will have a big impact on the '23 Horsemen. St. Michael's lost plenty but Joey Fernandez is among the best in New Mexico high school football and will have the Horsemen fighting for another run at the title.

32. Ruidoso Warriors

(3A): Former Cleveland (Rio Rancho) assistant coach Greg Crow inherits a team that went 12-1 and won the 3A New Mexico high school football state championship. Make no mistake, former head coach Kief Johnson is going to be missed. However, Crow - a first-time coach - brings plenty of excitement to the Warriors program. The building part, gone is Cody Pritchett a dynamic QB that passed for 1,936 yards and rushed for another 571 yards. RB Kaden Sago has graduated after putting up 1,739 rushing yards and 24 TDs. New Mexico Mr. Football runner up Dalton Trapp has also graduated. Crow's roster is in good hands with 2024 WR Logan Sandoval who led the team in receiving yards -- 945 yards and 12 TDs. 2025 RB Jaydin Ramirez returns after rushing for 312 yards as a sophomore taking only 52 carries. Cannon Cuellar (2024) is another that could see his numbers increase this season, he had 133 receiving yards and 2 TDs on 8 receptions. The defense takes a major hit with Trapp gone along with other all-state members Pritchett, Sago, and Gavin Hall. Look for returning starters Trenton Hall (2025), Diego Baca (2025), Jaydin Ramirez (2025), and Timothy Sanchez (2024) to move them forward. The Ruidoso Warriors lose plenty and perhaps the biggest piece being Kief Johnson. They've made a solid hire, key returning players, and could be another 8-10 win team during the regular season.

33. Capital Jaguars

(6A): Joaquin "Wax" Garcia proved to be the right hire at the right time for Capital. This is a massive building effort and it will take a total commitment to compete in the largest enrollment classification for football. The Jaguars went 5-5 (overall) and 2-2 in district play during the '22 season and looking for a playoff bid in 2023. As mentioned success against 6A team will be the goal this season as they went 2-4 against 6A level teams. The Jaguars have some starting roles to replacement and a huge void is at quarterback with the graduation of Julian Munoz who passed for 1,032 and rushed for another 782. The first look will be at the younger Munoz -- Juan. The 2025 RB rushed for 545 yards and 6 touchdowns last season as a sophomore for the Jaguars. Receiver Elijah Rodriguez (2024) and RB Joseph Rodriguez (2024) are another pair that should see production improve this fall for the Jaguars offense. Angelo Baker, LB (2024), Angel Gonzalez, K (2025) will be key players returning this season, Baker helping the defense. The Jaguars showed huge improvements last season. 5 wins is the measuring stick but getting to 6/7 could be the difference in a playoff bid.

34. Gadsden Panthers

(5A): The Panthers finished 5-7 overall (2-1 district) and earned the program's first playoff victory in coach Dino Facio's tenure. Getting back to the postseason will require replacements to emerge for all-New Mexico ATH Tomas Herrera. The quarterback passed for 647 yards and rushed for another 1,671 yards in '22. Juniors Adrian Munoz (QB) and Anthony Andrade (RB) is a good place to start. Andrade rushed for 460 yards and 2 touchdowns as a sophomore for the Panthers. Christopher Orozco (2025) provides a top target at receiver for the Panthers returning after 204 receiving yards as a sophomore. The strength for the Panthers in 2023 could be on the defensive side of the ball. Daan Cano (2025), Nathaniel Lopez (2024), Zach Talavera (2024), and Ryan Hernandez (2024) provide experience and depth. Cano was force with 137 total tacklers (54 solo) as a sophomore in '22. The Panthers reached new highs last season and there's optimism that they can continue taking steps forward. Over .500 this season could be the measuring mark in 2023 to help Facio build a winner at Gadsden.

35. Santa Teresa Desert Warriors

(5A): The 2022 season was saved with a final win in district play against Chaparral (48-0). The Desert Warriors finished the regular season 4-6 overall and received a playoff bid (11-seed). Through the first five games of the season the Desert Warriors sat 3-2 overall and looking at back-to-back winning seasons but a four game skid dropped them under the .500 mark. After the playoff loss the Desert Warriors ended up 4-7 overall. The bad news for the Desert Warriors is in the form of replacing a running back that rushed for over 1000 yards and 12 touchdowns. The good news being that dual threat quarterback Jack Bumgardner (2024) returns over over 600 yards passing and over 500 yards rushing (8 games). Jaxon Brown (2024) returns to a defense that will have to fill many starting spots. Brown led the way with 55 total tackles (39 solo). Gone are the days when the Desert Warriors entered the season at the bottom of the class and somewhere in the 60's when it came to preseason rankings. Head coach Shae Vierra has built a winner of the ST program -- 13 wins over the last two seasons and looking to make another playoff appearance. The Desert Warriors have made the playoffs in four consecutive years (2018-2022).

36. Los Alamos Hilltoppers

(5A): After a surprising run and winning the District 2-5A championship, the Hilltoppers get a slight edge here thanks to a team returning several key starters. Quarterback Zack Stidham (2024) passed for 1,142 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior. He returns his top two targets in Melaki Gutierrez (2024) and Kenny Suazo (2024) along with Haiden Jorgenson (2024). All three had over 250 receiving yards with Gutierrez leading the way with 502 and 5 touchdowns. The defense is deep with 2024 talent and the name to know is Jackson Blair a DE/OLB who had 54 total tackles and 7 sacks on the season. Kyler Young (2024) and Jehoran Quintana (2024) are a pair of defenders that will also spotlight the season. Winning the final four games of the regular season helped earn a state playoff bid where they would ultimately finish 6-5 overall for the '22 season. The Hilltoppers will look to make another run at a DC and could be a 5-7 win team by the end of the 2023 season.

37. Albuquerque Academy Chargers

(4A): New head coach David Lee is the right pick to continue building the Chargers into a top tier 4A football program. The Chargers are coming of a 7-5 overall, 1-2 district season reaching the state quarterfinals. Carter Speegle (2024), Brody Whitaker (2024), and David Logan Lee (2024) lead the charger in returning prospects. Whitaker and Lee guide the defense after playing big roles last season and early favorites for our preseason All-New Mexico team. Whitaker is a top-40 prospect this season and returns after 105 total tackles and 13 sacks as a junior. Speegle is the lone spark from a talented offense last season that will need to replace its quarterback, leading rushers and leading receivers. Speegle a talented receiver had 240 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns in 12 games for the Chargers. The Chargers do have some questions regarding their offense but the foundation has been established to make another run at the top with the hiring of assistant head coach David Lee. The district remains difficult with top southern programs Lovington and Portales along with the battles with Bernalillo.

38. Silver Colts

(4A): 11-2 record and a state championship appearance in '22, two highs for the Colts football program. The Colts were dominant all season long only allowing 68 total points that included six shutout wins. The offense also showed out averaging over 35 points per game and had three rushers over 500 yards on the season. All three have now graduated and the Colts will have a handful of openings for starting positions when Fall kicks-off. 2024 Adan Jacquez gained some experience last season playing behind that talented 2023 class. Jacquez had reps at quarterback throwing for 387 yards and a touchdown last season. He also added 136 yards rushing and 3 TDs. Perhaps the player that could be on the preseason All-New Mexico watch list is Julian Richard (2024) who led the team in receiving yards with 710 and 7 touchdowns. Over to that tough defensive unit from last season. Despite losing some very talented players and several starters the Colts will look to Julian Richard (2024), Diego Lucero (2024) and Anthony Rico (2024) in the secondary. Lucero and Rico each had 4 INTs on the season. The Colts graduate plenty, they are likely to take a step back from the achievements of last season but head coach Jerome Ortiz has built a tough program.

39. Aztec Tigers

(4A): The goal is a winning record. It last happened in 2019 when the Tigers went 8-4 overall and reached the quarterfinals. Second year head coach Hank Strauss led the Tigers to a 5-7 overall record last season and reached the quarterfinals after defeating Valencia in the first round. The key at making a run this season will go on the shoulders of senior Baylor Seabolt who had over 1,000 total yards (643 receiving, 333 rushing, 87 passing). Seabolt reached the end-zone 12 times for the Tigers and will see his numbers improve taking on a bigger role. Landon Frost (2024) and Justin Bixler (2024) are two other playmakers to keep an eye on this season for the Tigers offense. An obvious question will be under center as Marcquis Henry graduate this Fall after passing for 1,376 yards and 13 touchdowns. On defense the Tigers will look to the leadership of Seabolt who led the team in total tackles. Talan Olguin (2024), Jayden Godbay (2024), and Simeon Cardenas (2024) provide plenty of depth on the defense. The Tigers have experience returning, they'll find a new QB, and could be an early riser. The Tigers open with Miyamura again in '23, a game they won in '22, then play three consecutive weeks against Colorado teams before rounding out non-district gams vs Silver, at St. Michael's and then host Taos. The Tigers went 2-5 in non-district games.

40. Miyamura Patriots

(5A): The Miyamura Patriots continue to show success on the football field in Gallup. The Patriots are coming off a playoff birth and 5-6 overall record (2-1 district). David Foley will enter year two under the helm and looking to build off the momentum from last season. The '22 roster was senior heavy and will need to replace several starters including quarterback, running back, and the receiving core. The offense will feature many new faces and could be looking at a complete rebuild. 2024 ATH Dylan Joines filled many roles last season, gaining experience that will be needed to provide some immediate help. Joines is also the top leading defender for the Patriots and will be the main player for a defense that was also hit hard by graduation. Blaise Chavez (2024) and Julius Yazzie (2024) also provide some experience but the defense will be a work in progress. The Patriots schedule sits around a B-/C+ in terms of strength for a 5A level team. It's balanced for a team in a complete overhaul and the district is not overpowering (No. 41 Belen, No. 42 Highland) outside of Piedra Vista who is in position to have another strong season after playing for the state championship last season.

41. Belen Eagles

(5A): The Eagles finished 2-9 overall in '22, their lowest win total in 16 years (2006), going 1-9 overall last season. Second year head coach Kevin Pena hopes to change that moving forward this season with several returning players. Running backs Diego Avila (2024) and Derian Rodriguez (2024) return after leading the team in rushing yards last season. On defense Manuel Marquez (2025) and Joey Montoya Jr. (2025) return as key contributors for the Eagles defense. Marquez had 35 total tackles and 2 sacks last season. Dalton Golliheair (2025) also returns for the Eagles after starting as a sophomore. The Eagles have a well balanced schedule again this season and looking to the youth from last season to really produce in 2023 is the goal.

42. Highland Hornets

(5A): After a strong 5-1 start to the '22 season the Hornets dropped their final three games of the season to finish 5-4 overall and 2-1 in district play. Outscored 120-7 in those final three games ultimately led to them missing the playoffs after being a bubble hopeful. The Hornets have excitement returning in the form of Alex Lopez (2025/QB) and Amiri Mumba (2025/RB). The run first Hornets offense returns its top two leading rushers and key go-to players from last season. Lopez, Mumba, and Joziah Rodriguez (2024) will also lead the defense as key leaders. The Hornets only had six seniors on the roster last season which would give them over 20 returning players giving some promise for a program that struggles with numbers.

43. Valencia Jaguars

(4A): A fresh start for the program under new head coach LeDarrius Cage. The Jaguars are coming off a season in which they finished 4-7 overall and 2-1 in district. They also reached the playoffs falling in the first round. There will be some rebuilding for the Jaguars with the loss of do all quarterback Ryan Garcia (726) who led the team in passing yards and rushing yards (496). The receiving core will virtually be new this season as well with the top two leaders gone. Looking ahead Daniel Villegas (2024) returns after some experience, in seven games he rushed for nearly 400 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tyler Farless (2025) and Damien Estrada (2024) have the most experience at receiver for the Jaguars last season. The OL will feature starter Andrew Rightley (2024) who could be an early riser on our list. The defense will need to replace top LB Adriano Ortiz from '22. The defense takes the biggest hit and we will see plenty of new faces filling voids from last season. The Jaguars made a splash of a hire this off-season but the rebuilding process could take time. Graduation hit the Jaguars hard and they will have an inexperienced squad.

44. Moriarty Pintos

(4A): The Pintos have won 15 games in the last two seasons and are coming off an 8-win season that includes a playoff win. The strong start to the season, going 4-1, guided their playoff bid. The run game was the strength last season and they return a wealth of prospects in the backfield. The duo of Amare Gonzales (2024) and Santiago Chavez (2024) could be the force that rides them into a deeper playoff run this season. Chavez led the team in rushing yards with 917 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Gonzales a dual threat QB rushed for 388 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns in 2022. Dominic Montano (2025) and Corban Pearce (2025) return to the OL after much experience as sophomores. Solomon Souza-Kennedy (2024) and Jace McCutcheon (2024) will team up with Gonzales, Chavez, and Pearce on an experienced defense. The Pintos have some key pieces returning and could be a top four team in class 4A by the end of the season. The schedule is a good mixture of playoff level teams and games that they are favored. They had four shutout wins last season and averaged over 32 points per game.

45. St. Pius X Sartans

(4A): A fresh start for the program under new head coach Curtis Flakes should get the Sartans back on track in '23. Although the Sartans are coming off dismal season going 2-9 overall and 1-2 in district play, Flakes track record shows success in building programs. Plenty of holes to fill on the Sartans roster this season after graduating key starters. 2024 ATH Moosie Neel produce numbers last season and led the team in receiving yards (371 yards). Peyton Underwood (2024) and Brian Thomas (2025) will get more touches this fall at their positions. Neel, Leon Sutulov (2024), and Aaron Guzman (2024) led the defense last season and are key players for the Sartans heading into the preseason. The Sartans played an above strength in schedule last season and if they can flip some of their close losses they could be a quick rebound, back to above .500 like in 2021 (8-3 overall). They made the winning hire, now it turns to the getting it done on the field.

46. Taos Tigers

(4A): Taos quietly rushed out to a 10-win season in 2022. After dropping the opening game the Tigers pulled off 10-straight wins, it included a district championship (4-0) and a playoff win over Academy to reach to the 4A semifinals. The big void to fill is in the form of quarterback Daemon Ely who led the team in rushing yards (1,001 yards, 16 rushing TDs) and of course passing yards - 1,361 passing yards and 14 passing touchdowns. Looking forward Mateo Salazar (2025) rushing for 359 yards on 25 carries for the Tigers. Noah Washington (2024) was second in receiving yards with 362. Washington and Salazar are also two prospects to watch on defense for the Tigers this season. Kelan Maes (2025) and Jedrek Jozwiak (2025) are two sophomores that are sure to shine on the defensive front for the team this season. If the schedule flips over from last season, the Tigers could be in good position for another 10-win season. The schedule strength is not very high which could lead to another DC and playoff win. Finding a QB will be the question leading into the opening game.

47. Santa Fe Demons

(6A): The Demons were rattled by injuries last season and a combination of with new faces in new places resulted in a rebuilding season. After a 1-9 season the Demons are hopeful that a year spent on development will turn into some success. The schedule still doesn't do it favors but it also preps them for a district that is not super overwhelming in 6A football. The district only earned one state playoff bid last season, the same could be the same in 2023, but the Demons are in building mode. They are only one year removed from a 6-4 season. Bryce Melton (ATH/2025), Matt Abeyta (QB/2024), and Alex Mora (RB/2024) lead a talented offense that could provide a spark for the Demons this season. Mateo Griego (CB/2024) and Tomas Martinez (LB/2024) are key returners on defense this season. The Demons have that dark horse feel to their roster heading into the season. Don't be surprised to see the Demons pull off 2/3 wins -- yes, that's a big improvement. Stay healthy and the Demons will give you a fight. Melton is going to be one of the next big time players.

48. Kirtland Central Broncos

(4A): The Broncos dropped four of their final five games to end the 2022 season at 4-6 overall. The season did include a state playoff appearance though and hoping for a promise start to 2023. The Broncos offense returns 2025 quarterback Bryle Matthews who finished with 862 yards and 4 touchdowns last season as a sophomore. Matthews also rushed for 628 yards and 8 touchdowns. Leading rusher Demusico Edsitty (2024) returns this season, the junior rushed for 658 yards and 7 touchdowns last season. Top receiving target Noah Dineyazhe (2024) had 464 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns for the Broncos last season. Elijah Grey (2024) and Jesse Foutz (2025) will lead a defense that lost several starters to graduation. Grey had 55 total tackles and 4.5 sacks last season. The Broncos should float around 4/5 wins again this season and might improve their 1-2 (2022) to 2-1, if they can beat Aztec or Bloomfield in district play this season.

49. Manzano Monarchs

(5A): The start of the 2022 season began with three shutouts, losing 140-0 leading to 8 straight losses before beating Del Norte (55-26). Ultimately falling in the final game of the season to Albuquerque, ending 1-9 overall and 1-2 in district (2-5A). The defense takes a hit with graduation, look for Eli Darnell (LB 2024) who could be an all-district level linebacker. The strength for this roster could be in returning all starters from the secondary -- Justin Duran (2026), Elijah Barber (2024), Reggie Clark (2025), and Khaliq Waites (2025). The offense also losses a lot of contributors and have many holes to fill. The OL gives some hope with the return of Robert White (2025), Nick Baca (2025), and Tony Paulson (2024) to provide some blocking for an entirely new backfield. Manzano is 2-17 in two years, this could be more of the same this season in terms of wins, based on having to replace many key roles from a team that won just a single game.

50. Socorro Warriors

(3A): Coach Damien Ocampo has guided Socorro to a 21-3 record over the last two season including winning 11-straight in 2022, finishing 11-1 overall. With that in mind, the Warriors will have some major holes to fill as we enter the 2023 season. Marcus Armijo is a difficult task to replace after nearly a combined 2,500 passing and rushing yards. Alex Amaro (2024) and Isaiah Ocampo (2025) are bright studs, with limited touches, that will be trusted into starting roles. The defense also takes a major hit and the overhaul looks to 2025 players David Gutierrez and Cenyon Scarbrough. The pair played in nine games for the Warriors and combined for over 50 total tackles. The Warriors have some question marks, will have newcomers, but another district championship and possible playoff run could be likely. We know they'll be well coached, prepared, and with their record they'll be in the top-four seed conversation.

51. Hope Christian Huskies

(3A): After a 7-5 mark and playoff win in 2021, the Huskies seemed poised for another successful season in wins last year. However, the Huskies went 4-6-1 and lost in the first round of the playoffs. The Huskies relied heavy on the run game and will have to replace leading rusher Brent Miller. The Huskies will look to rising ATH Ronnie Gilletti (2025) who showed promise last season playing under center. Nicholas Degraffeneid (2024) is expected to get more carries this season and move up the depth chart into the number one slot. When they decide to throw the ball a majority of targets went to 2025 Breylon Williams who finished with 228 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2022. Next level talent Jacob Baca will anchor the OL/DL for the Huskies as he enters his senior season. The Huskies could be the dark-horse in 3A football this season and float back around the 7-win total.

52. Eunice Cardinals

(2A): It was a toss up for the 52nd and 53rd spots and both will be ranked 1-2 this preseason in 2A football. The Eunice Cardinals have been the football power in 2A football for the last 7/8 years. They own a four peat (2017-2021) and played in six straight state championship games, ending the streak in 2022. Well, after going 7-4 last season and reaching the state semifinals the Cardinals will return as a top contender through their reload season. 2026 stud quarterback Elijah Melancon passed for 2,182 yards and 31 passing touchdowns as a freshman. Elian Woods (2025) rushed for 526 yards and 5 rushing touchdowns as a sophomore. The top five receiving targets return including All-New Mexico level prospects Ashton Thompson (2024) and Maddox Mata (2025) both of which went for over 650-yards on the season and combined for 22 receiving TDs. The Cardinals have plenty to like as a favorite to return to the final game of the season.

53. Texico Wolverines

(2A): The Wolverines return as a team capable of winning the 2A state championship and will make an early push for the number one slot in the class. The Wolverines went 9-4 (overall) behind Bob Gilbreath and an offense that averaged 37 points per game. The Wolverines fell short in the state championship, 41-21, to Jal but have their eyes on a return. Cade Figg (2024), Alex Fuentes (2025) and Taye Smith (2025) form a trio that could be considered the best in 2A football. Texico brings back a talented core and will be around the 7-9 win range heading into the season.

54. West Las Vegas Dons

(3A): A major transition is underway in Las Vegas. After a 6-6 record and playoff win last season, the Dons parted ways with one of their most successful head coaches - Adrian Gonzales. Patrick Rodriguez enters as the new head coach after being an assistant with NMHU and previously at West Las Vegas. He inherits a solid roster that includes quarterback CJ Perea (2025) who passed for 2,016 yards and 21 touchdowns last season. Ethan Tafoya (2025/RB) and Pablo Montano (2024/WR) round out a core on offense returning. Tafoya and Montano also head up the defense. Patrick Rodriguez (2025), Carlo Lucero (2026) and Mark Balizan (2025) will be key players moving forward. The Dons have talent going into the season and we will be watching as they adapt to their new head coach.

55. Santa Rosa Lions

(2A): The Lions surged after a 1-2 start to the 2022 season by winning seven straight games to end the regular season. The Lions ended 9-3 overall after going 1-1 in the 2A New Mexico high school football state playoffs. Running backs Andres Madrid and Marcos Chavez leave big shoes to fill on an offense. The pair of running backs rushed for 2,888 yards together and 44 touchdowns (Madrid 30, Chavez 14). Nicolas Cage (2024) returns for his senior season after gaining 231 yards on 18 carries last season. 2024 quarterback Jykub Gage passed for 576 yards and 7 touchdowns last season along with rushing for 177 yards and 2 TDs. Nicolas Chavez, Daniel Romero (2024), and Ryan Tenorio (2024) return to a tough defense that only allowed 8.6 points per game (104 total). QB Jykub Gage is also a tough defender who had 6 interceptions for the Lions last season. The Lions were tough last season and 7/8 regular wins is the meter stick.

56. New Mexico Military Institute Colts

(3A) The Colts started the 2022 season 4-1 and looked to make the state playoffs. They dropped four straight before winning the final game, ending 5-5 overall and missing state. The Colts have a new head coach, in a former HC, for the 2023 season. John O'Mera takes over the Colts program. Leonardo Lopez (2024) returns with some experience at running back last season. The Colts offense went through quarterback Juan Badillo but has since graduated. The offensive line was big last season but will also need to replace some key players. Gabriel Richardson (2024/OL-DL) and Samuel McCargish (2025/OL-DL) will provide help up front for the Colts. Steven Griego (2024) and William Rosser (2024) return on defense for the Colts this season. The goal for the Colts will be staying around .500 and pushing for a playoff spot.

57. Bernalillo Spartans

(4A): Two things in regards to the Bernalillo Spartans 2022 season. First, they had to spend the entire season in a rebuild after graduating key players from the 2021 roster that finished 5-6 overall. Next, they improved their overall schedule strength dropping weaker teams for playoff level teams. The Spartans went 2-8 overall and 0-3 in district play. All 8-losses came at the hands of a team that reached the state playoffs and to a team that finished .500 or above. They also moved into a new district with Albuquerque Academy and added southeast schools Portales and Lovington. Good news as the rebuild process included 2025 quarterback Uriel Castro who passed for 1,281 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2022. Diego Molinar (2024) was the number two RB last season and returns after earning 256 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. Castro also returns his top two targets at receiver including Mason Espinda (2024) who led the team with 712 yards and 4 touchdowns. Espinda, Molinar, and Shawn Armijo (2024) return as key players on defense. The Spartans will play the end of the two year schedule. 2-4 wins is the likelihood but in 2022 they still earned a playoff spot and nearly upset Academy in the opening round (7-6 score).

58. Rio Grande Ravens

(IND): The 6A-Independent Rio Grande Ravens snapped a 14 game losing streak this season and finished 2-7 overall. The Ravens program continues to be one of the most difficult jobs in all of New Mexico high school football. The program has only 10-wins in the over the last 10-years and they have four seasons that went without a win. They will again play IND football u do have some returning players that played well in 2022. Three prospects to watch this season -- QB Zavien Carreon (2024), RB Alejandro Quintana (2025), and MLB Diego Quintana (2025). The Ravens will again be undersized and numbers low but if the three players above continue to improve the Ravens could battle in the 2/3 win range.

59. Raton Tigers

(3A): A few plays short of playing for the 3A state championship. That sums up a 9-4 (overall) 2022 season for the Raton Tigers. Now, let the rebuild start as they graduate NMPreps/Rivals New Mexico Mr. Football award winner Cayden Walton. The running back leaves behind a void in the amount of 3,123 rushing yards and 38 touchdowns. The Tigers will use a group of underclassmen along with 2024 Jacob Mattorano, who has the most experience with 30 carries for 108 yards and 3 touchdowns. At receiver Cannon Walton (2025) and Wd Hyer (2024) provide some experience with both having over 300-yards receiving in 2022. Hyer, Mattorano, and Isaac Garcia (2024) will be the experience on defense for the Tigers this season. Garcia led the team in sacks with 3 on the season and Hyer leads the returners with 98 total tackles last season. Another player to keep an eye on the season is Wyatt Berry who had 4 picks last season. The Tigers lost a lot but they have some key pieces that will make an immediate impact.

60. Dexter Demons

(3A): Dexter finished the 2022 season at 5-6 overall, 3-1 in district with a state playoff appearance. The Demons went 4-1 to end the season after 1-5 start to the regular season. Kaesn George (2025) returns at running back after rushing for 490 yards and 4 touchdowns on 82 carries as a sophomore in 2022. George also led the team in receiving yards with 188 along with 2 receiving TDs. Kevin Villalobos (2024) showed plenty of promise last season rushing for 456 yards and passing for another 532 yards. Villalobos has the opportunity to be one of the early risers this season. Garret Gonzalez (2026) and Omar Lopez (2025) are two key players for this season that will continue to develop with more reps. Ivandre Aguilar (2025) and Devin Munoz (2025) along with Gonzalez will anchor a solid defense returning for the Demons this season. Dexter has the pieces returning to make a run and make things interesting this season. Playoff team with chances at reaching the quarterfinal/semifinal round.

61. Jal Panthers

(2A): Perfection. The Jal Panthers finally claimed the 2A state championship after a 23 year drought. The Panthers finished the 2023 season 13-0 after defeating Texico (41-21) in the championship game. Looking ahead for the Panthers will produce many challenges including the graduation of the most talent for any 2A program during a three/four year stretch. 2025 ATH Nolbert Cervantez provides some experience after getting some reps behind the all-state level players that have graduated. Cervantez rushed for 201 yards (29 carries) and could be the option at QB. Ito Arroyo (2024) and Andre Rodriguez (2025) will see their production improve with more opportunities this season. Brandon Houston (2024) and Jesus Carreon (2024) will be the strength of the Panthers this season as two of the top defenders in 2A football entering the season. The Panthers are likely to take a dip into the rebuild/reload but they'll have enough pieces to compete as a top five team in the class.

62. Espanola Valley Sundevils

(4A): Perhaps the surprise team of 2022 was the Sundevils improving their win total by 5-games -- 1-9 overall in 2021 to 6-4 in 2022. Head coach Tylon Wilder was an underrated hire heading into the 2022 season but made huge strides in his first season at the helm. Adrick Deleon (2024) returning at receiver along Alex Chavez (2024) who is another prospect on the rise only expected to see his numbers increase on both sides of the ball. Chavez rushed for over 700-yards last season. If 2022 proved anything it was that the Sundevils have continued to make improvements to their football program. Will that lead to a playoff birth in 2023?

63. Pojoaque Valley Elks

(4A): The Elks took a major dip last season, after going 5-4 overall in 2021, they finished without a win in 2022 (0-9 overall, 0-3 district). The Elks had six shoutout losses last season and only scored 20 points total through the 2022 season. There's no easy fix for new first time head coach Zeke Villegas. The former Capital AD takes over the Elks program and will have to build from scratch. They also lost one of their promising 2025 running backs who transferred to Cleveland (Rio rancho). Top player from last season Adam Pacheco graduated this Spring. Plenty of departures as the Elks enter a new era. Ethan Meloy-Chavez (2024) provides immediate help after leading the receiving core last season and was a leader on defense.

64. Del Norte Knights

(5A): The Del Norte Knights have been on a consistent slide since the 2019 season. That season they finished 2-1 in district play and almost made the playoffs. Fast forward and the Knights are currently riding a 16-game losing streak -- 0-10 overall in 2022. Not much mentioned about the Knights last season. Two-year starters Joziah Turtle-Morales (2024) and Kenneth Estrada (2024) return for the Knights. Both have shared time under center for the Knights in the past. The rebuild is sure to last for the Knights but hope to get on the winning side of things and will circle a date with Rio Grande in late September. The Ravens won 22-20 in overtime in 2022.

65. Chaparral Lobos

(5A): The first 5A school is off the board on our 2023 preseason rankings. The Lobos are 0-20 over the last two years and looking for any opportunity to get the program going. The Lobos gave up 448 points last season and were shutout six times last season. The offense scored 41 points while reaching double digits on the scoreboard twice. There is some good news in the form of quarterback Israel Nieto (2026) who earned some experience last season as a freshmen. He provides help for the near future and gives them a QB-1. His numbers will improve after passing for 388-yards through 8-game in 2022. He also rushed for 166-yards last season. Reese Martinez (2025) and Juan Urquizo (2026) are a pair of offense players that will only improve and develop as they get experience. Martinez was second in receiving yards last season for the Lobos with 137 yards. The defense was hit hard by graduation and 2026 player Aaron Eliserio (2026) returns with the most experience. The Lobos were young last season and the growing pains will continue but expect to see improve this season.

66. Loving Falcons

(2A): The Falcons started the season 6-0 in 2022 but hit a wall when district play start ultimately finishing 7-4 on the year. A playoff birth and finishing above .500 was a huge accomplishment for the Falcons after going 1-9 in 2021. More good news during this rebuild will be the return of quarterback Kaleb Rodriguez (2024). Rodriguez passed for 1,601 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior for the Falcons. Starting running back Bobby Parraz (2026) also returns and could see his numbers improve after rushing for 574 yards and 4 touchdowns as a freshmen. A key strength for the Falcons was the defensive unit in 2022 and they will have to quickly rebuild. All-state linebacker Eduardo De La Cruz (2024) returns after leading the team in total tackles. Two players that will see their production rise and players on our "keep an eye on" will be defensive backs Giovanni Ruiz (2024) and Tristen Onsurez (2026). Both are preseason 2A All-New Mexico players. The Falcons should be in the hunt this season, but will need to fill defense and receiver needs. 7/6 wins again with a chance at a playoff win.

67. Tularosa Wildcats

(2A): The Tularosa Wildcats could be an early riser this season. The Wildcats finished the season 4-7 overall (2-1 district). After starting the season 1-4, they showed some signs of what's to come, finishing 3-3 on the year and making the state playoffs. Key player Kani Mathis (2024) returns for the Wildcats and will be one of the top receivers in the class to watch. Michael Hood (2025) and Dillon Salazar (2024) are two other prospects who could find themselves on the end of the season awards list. The Wildcats have an opportunity make huge strides this season.

68. Grants Pirates

(4A): The Pirates are 2-18 over the last two years, winning 1-game each season over Gallup. The program is currently searching for their next head coach after parting ways with Brandon Hernandez. The Pirates have a lot of ground to make up after allowing four shutouts and being outscored 373 to 74 last season. The talent did drop after the 2020 season and have been in a rebuild of both numbers and experience. Julian Padilla (2024), Tristin Fernandez (2026), and Andres Lazos (2025) provide some immediate help for the offense and could usher in the next talented group. Brandon Small (2024), Larry Meador (2024) and Aaron Jimenez (2024) return as starters on the defense. The Pirates have an opportunity to make strides this season but need to act fast on a hire

69. Shiprock Chieftains

(4A): Head coach Anthony Clah has proven to be a good choice to lead the Chieftains. He led the team to a 4-6 overall record last season, playing as a 4A Independent. They lose key players from last season but have optimism surrounding some contributors. Austin King (2024) earned plenty of key reps last season passing for 335-yards along with rushing for 128-yards. Receiver Alexavier Yazzie (2024) also returns after gaining 364-yards and a pair of touchdowns last season. Yazzie, Ethan Howe (2025), and Xavion Smith (2025) return as starters to the defense. The Chieftains will play as an independent again this season.

70. Gallup Bengals

(4A): It's no secret that Gallup High School is one of the toughest jobs in 4A football, and it could be another season in the cellar. The Bengals went 0-10 overall in 2022 and are 1-19 over the two-year span. Another coaching change will only set them back further. Overall the Bengals had seven shutout games and finished the season with 31 total points scored while giving up 445 points to opponents. Looking forward the Bengals welcome back Brett Baker (2024) and Trelin Bruner (2024) two players that contributed in big ways for a senior laden squad. The Bengals welcome new head coach Robbie Bornholdt, who was hired in late April. Bornholdt coached primarily in the Hobbs and Lovington area over the last 16 years.

71. Hatch Valley Bears

(3A): There was considerable progress in Hatch last year under now former head coach Louis Howell. Hatch Valley finished 2021 with a record of 1-9 overall but improved to 6-4-1 with a playoff appearance last Fall. The Bears will have some ground to make after losing all-state running back Layton Gillis who graduated this Spring. Gillis rushed for 1,741-yards and 25 touchdowns last season. Quarterback Jacob Gomez (2024) showed signs of being a go-to guy this Fall. He passed for 567-yards and 7-touchdowns for the Bears. The defense will be the strength for an incoming head coach with Frank Angel (2024), Adan Gutierrez (2024), and Waylon Apodaca (2024) returning with plenty of experience. Two-way player Omar Gonzalez (2026) could be the next top talent for the Bears after a successful freshmen season. Hatch first needs a head coach, but 2023 could be a step back after the success they had in 2022.

72. Cobre Indians

(3A):After going 3-8 (overall) in 2021 the Cobre Indians took steps in the right direction improving their record to 5-7 (overall). They have consecutive seasons at 2-1 in district finishing runner-up but reaching the state playoffs. 2022 was a big year of improvements that also resulted in a playoff win over Dexter (35-22) in the first round. Jesse James Dominguez (2024/LB), Cesar Jimenez (2024/DE), Niko Trujillo (2024/WR) and Gavin Chuy (2024/WR-CB) are the top players to watch this coming season. The Indians have enough key prospects to make a run and push the limit at .500 or better. The roster makeup puts them as a favorite to be a plus one playoff team (win a playoff game).

73. Escalante Lobos

(2A): The Lobos continue to be in the .500 range. The 2021 season they finished 4-4 and last season (2022) they went 5-5 during the regular season (5-6 overall; Lost, first round of state). That's the "bad" news for the Lobos. The future looks bright and a return to being a top tier 2A team. Trey Archula (2024) and Luka Torrez (2024) return for the Lobos forming a must-see duo from the backfield this season. Archuleta, who lines up under center, rushed for 951 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns last season. Torrez rushed for another 919 yards and reached the end zone 7 times for the Lobos. Archuleta did pass for nearly 500 yards and despite losing his top target Grayson Horan (2024), Braylon Emery (2026), and Gumi DeYapp (2025) return and create the receiving core. The strength of the Lobos this coming season will be an experience defense -- Emery and Torrez are the anchor for the Lobos. Marcilo Baeza (2025), Ramon Martinez (2026), and Jeremiah Martinez (2026) will again be key factors this season. The Lobos will be solid and could be looking to get into the 7/8 win range in 2023.

74. Hot Springs Tigers

(3A): The Hot Springs Tigers started the Philip Camp era going 2-8 overall, 0-3 in district. The Tigers won back-to-back games before dropping all three in district play to Cobre, Socorro, and Hatch Valley. Struggling on both sides of the ball the offense was shutout in four games, while only scoring 40 points in the other four losses (10 ppg in losses). Looking forward the Tigers return 2024 quarterback Kaiden Lanham who passed for 1,085-yards and 11 touchdowns last season as a junior. Lanham also rushed for 254 yards and a touchdowns. Tristan Polanco (2026) and Ashton Garcia (2025) both return at receiver after gaining over 400 yards combined and 6 touchdowns between the pair. The defense graduates a majority of contributors from last season and could struggle early on. Polanco is one of the most experienced players returning after earning 28 total tackles and 2.5 sacks as a freshman in 2022. The Tigers went 1-4 against 3A competition (1-3 against 2A and 0-2 vs Texas) and could be looking at a similar position in 2023. The offense should be better with some experience but will have troubles in district play along with a non-district schedule featuring tough 2A powers (Eunice, Tularosa). The early over/under could have the Tigers looking at 1.5.

75. Thoreau Hawks

(3A) The Hawks are coming off a record 9-3 overall and reached the state quarterfinals after winning a first round game (over Hope Christian). From 2016-2020 the Hawks won 10 games. The last two years they have 15-wins, a playoff win, and plenty of promise looking forward to the 2023 season. Head coach Erik Loera has quickly built some of the best years in Hawks history. More good news for the Hawks? Starting running back Ray Long (2024) returns after rushing for nearly 1,000-yards and 11-touchdowns (in nine games). Quarterback Isaac Bear Eagle (2024) also returns along with his number one target Elijah Trickey (2024). Will the 2023 season be the best one yet? A return to the playoffs is the likely prediction and will be in a battle with Crownpoint for another district championship (3-0 in 2022). Early prediction, we have the Hawks at 8-wins.

76. Newcomb Skyhawks

(3A) The Skyhawks went 8-3 overall last season and won District 1-3A with a perfect 3-0 record. The Skyhawks also coming off a playoff bid reaching the first round. Jeremy Wooten found early success in his first season at the helm, the Texas native took over the program prior to the 2022 season. The bad news for the Skyhawks will look to rebuild their roster after departing seniors leave voids in crucial positions -- quarterback, running back, and receivers. The Skyhawks will be young, they'll have some experience, but it could be growing pains this season.

77. Crownpoint Eagles

(3A): The Eagles are coming off back-to-back five win seasons. However, going 1-2 in district play has kept them out of the playoffs. The good news for the program and head coach Roderick Harlan is the return of quarterback Johnathan Antonio (2024). Antonio showed the ability to make things happen out of the backfield. Also, bringing plenty of experience is Calian Tenequer-Joe (2025) who started at running back for the Eagles last season. LaVontae Robinson (2025) will also bring experience from the receiving core. Can this be the season to take over the district? The Eagles have an early prediction of 5-wins but a good chance we will see them making a leap forward and the playoffs are the goal. For head coach Harlan it is a longtime coming after guiding and building this football program to the competitive level it has been playing.

78. Tohatchi Cougars

(3A): Head coach Darrick Henry and the Cougars are coming off a a successful two-year run winning 11-games. After a 2-4 start to the 2022 campaign the Cougars would win 3 of the final four games to finish 5-5 overall and 2-1 in district play. The good news entering the season will be the return of quarterback Elijah Johnson (2025). As a sophomore Johnson played well and displayed some promise at the position and experience will only help in his development. A nice target for Johnson is Adriano Begay (2025) who also excelled as a sophomore last season. The Cougars are in position to battle for another district championship in 2023 and sit around 5/6 wins.

79. Wingate Bears

(3A): After going 0-8 during the 2021 season the Bears turned a corner last season improving their record to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in district play. The Bears finished the season 4-1 after starting 1-4. Another positive was only featuring six seniors on the roster last season with hopes of bringing back twenty two experienced players. Third-year head coach AD Jim has done a solid job in just two-years to rebuild (or build) after not playing football in 2020. The Bears will have to replace two year quarterback Leshane Wyaco but they hope with the amount of players returning next season, they'll again battle for a district championship. Looking ahead at their schedule they'll open with Navajo Prep on August 24th. The earliest prediction we have is 4-5 overall (+1, -1).

80. Estancia Bears

(2A): The Bears finished 6-5 overall in 2022 winning the District 3-2A championship. The Bears lost 35-34 in the playoffs to Eunice and will look to build off a successful season. They'll have some voids to fill and a big one in All-State player Jabrae Boyer who led the team under center. The big news however is the return of 1,360-yard rushing running back Josh Calhoon (2023). The senior running back also reached the end zone 11 times for the Bears and averaged 6.7 yards per carry. Tyler Modgling (2023) and Edward Lucero (2023) are another pair of seniors to keep an eye on this season. Modgling led the team in total tackles (84). The Bears will battle for the district title again and could be the surprise team, around .500 is expected (+1, -1).

81. Hagerman Bobcats

(2A): The Bobcats have only won 7 games in the last three seasons of football since going 7-4 in 2019 -- that year they won two playoff games and played in the state semifinals. The scoop on the Bobcats is this, they went 2-8 last season but finished the season on a 8-game losing streak. They graduate their key receivers and quarterback. Head coach Paul Lopez enters his second season as head coach and will be looking to fill voids and get things back on track for the program. 2024 running back Jaime Arebalos could carry the haul this season but expect several new names. The early prediction could have the Bobcats around 2/3 wins and struggle through a difficult district slate of games.

82. Capitan Tigers

(2A): It took eight games before the Tigers earned the lone win of the 2022 season (1-9 overall). A significant drop from going 7-3 overall the previous season. That's the bad news. The good news. The Tigers will return 17 of 20 player from that roster and will be loaded with returners. It may take another year to really make an impact with half (10) the roster being a freshman last season. Replacing Jaden Peralta at running back will be a task but look for Aiden Smith (2024), Victor Cano (2024), and company to make an impact this season. We project the Tigers to finish around 2/3 wins next season but you can expect to see improvements.

83. Santa Fe Indian Braves

(3A): The Braves enter the 2023 season riding a 6-game losing streak -- they were outscored 317 to 32 during those final games. Adding more to the struggle will be having to replace their number one option for the run-heavy offense. Leonard Baldonado (2024) will move into the slot after gaining 187-yards last season on 31 carries (6.0). Not a lot of experience but did break out for a few long runs. Baldonado and Caleb Martinez (2025) will also anchor the defense for the Braves who will have some returners to what was an inexperienced and youthful defense in 2022. The Braves should be improved but they will again but in an uphill battle against their difficult district. 2 to 3 wins is the likely.

84. Cuba Rams

(3A): After a promising start to the season winning 2 of the first 3 the Rams finished on a 7 game losing streak. Now they look to improve after a 2-8 overall season and much of that could be on the shoulders of quarterback Richard Lopez. The 2026 prospect finished with 600 passing yards and nearly 200 yards rushing as a freshman (8 games played). Lye Castillo (2024) and Garrick Roe (2026) are two talented players that earned key playing experience last season. Exceeding last year's two wins would be a good goal for 2023 in the building efforts of young talent.

85. McCurdy Bobcats

(2A): The Bobcats finished 4-6 last season and could have been on the cusp of something better, maybe a winning season, going 4-2 to end the season. Another promising outlook for the Bobcats is the return of the entire roster (22 of 26 roster players). Looking at those keys players for next season we look at ATH Jeremya Roybal (2025) and Lucas Martinez (2024). Martinez worked under center last season and was a key part to third-year head coach Robert Nevarez. The Bobcats have the opportunity to make a jump with a handful of key players from last season. The defense will need to improve and limit turnovers, two areas in which they struggled last season.

86. Navajo Prep Eagles

(3A): The Eagles finished with a 1-8 record (1-2 district), as the programs lone with came at home against Zuni High School. Outside of the win and two 8-point losses (at Crownpoint, and at Tohatchi) the other games were decided by 14 or more points with two shutout losses. Navajo Prep also had a posting for a new head coach but no announcement has been made on a new head coach. This could lead to another struggling season with plenty of uncertainty. The bright side for the Eagles will be on the shoulders of 2025 player Xavier Nez who led as QB last season. His top target Lane Wilson (2024) also set to return could provide some help.

87. Laguna-Acoma Hawks

(2A): The Hawks went 3-7 overall last season, three of those wins coming against 3A opponents (Wingate, Cuba, Zuni). They are expected to return several starters, only graduating eight players from a relevantly young roster in 2022. They will need to replace to key players in Kendrick Brown (LB/RB) along with replacing QB Thomas Martin III. A huge plus for a run first team is returning their OL - Austin Wilson (2024), Joseph Gedman (2024), Chawnice Gedman (2026), and Lester Vallo (2026). Ekhai Tiller (2026) also returns after earning valuable experience last season. The defense takes a hit and will need to replace the most. The Hawks are most likely to be the riser from this preseason rankings and could be a playoff team in 2023.

88. Tucumcari Rattlers

(3A): The Rattlers played one of the tougher schedules in the class that led to an 0-10 overall record. The Rattlers will also be on their third head coach in three years. They will return a handful of experience after playing a handful of 2025, 2026 players. The process could take some time though and will need stability.

89. Zuni Thunderbirds

(3A): The Thunderbirds will enter the 2023 on an eight game losing streak (1-9 overall, 0-3 district in 2022). The lone win coming against Cuba, 28-6, in late August. The good news will be featuring a handful of three-year lettermen and providing some experience.

90. Mescalero Apache Chiefs

(2A): The Chiefs went 2-8 overall (0-3 district) last season with both of those wins coming against JV-teams. They struggled on both ends of the football being outscored 85-348 during the 2022 campaign. The good news is if both Angelo Rocha (2024/QB) and Landyn Hiles (2026/RB) return on offense it will provide them experience and talent.

91. Cloudcroft Bears

(2A): Playing 2A independent football next season after being dormant during the 2022 season. The Bears will look to rebuild their football program.

92. Hozho Academy Wolves

(2A): The new school in Gallup will play 2A Independent this season. This will be their first season of varsity football.
